No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2009-12-08 / The present work, entitled Saturated Fat: Meanings and "cargo" Cultural Morbid Obesity Nordestinos for Men, is an anthropological study that reveals the lived-experience of morbidly obese men in Fortaleza, Ceará, capital city in Northeast Brazil. During six months in 2009, ethnographic interviews, illness narratives and participant-observation were conducted with men who had undergone bariatric surgery in a public hospital. Six information rich cases were analyzed utilizing Contextualized Semantic Interpretation. We reveal that fat is "saturated" with the significance of suffering, shame, social injustice, low selfesteem, prejudice, discrimination and anxiety. The meaning of these exaggeratingly obese men's "burden" is constructed in the local moral world where machismo, sexual virility, muscle-toned bodies and standarized measurements are demanded but where, paradoxically, excessive abdominal fat is associated with power, privilege and social mobility--with "A King in the Belly". After surgery, significances are recorded in the body's memory, stigmatizing them. It is revealed, however, the possibility of flexibility of preassumptions and social reframing of ex-obese persons. Treatment requires going beyond reducing the Indice of Body Mass or abdominal perimeter. It is necessary to remove suffering saturated in fat and re-define rigid bodily standards pre-established by society and local culture.
