Homoeopathy in hypercholesterolaemia

Joseph, Jeanine Dorothy January 1994 (has links)
Dissertation submitted in partial compliance with the requirements for the Master's Diploma in Technology: Homoeopathy, Technikon Natal, 1994. / The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Chelidonium 3X in the treatment of hypercholesterolaemia in terms of changes in the blood cholesterol levels in order to determine the extent to which homoeopathic medicine could be used in the treatment of this condition. It was hoped that there would be a drop i n the total cholesterol levels and an increase in the ratio of high density / low density lipoprotein. Participants in the trial were drawn from the staff at Technikon Natal, convenience sampling being used. For acceptance into the trial, 'participants had to have an elevated total cholesterol level together with a raised low density lipoprotein value according to age. Drawing of blood was performed following an overnight fast. Of those participants meeting the above criteTicrthirty were chosen to participate in the trial. Half constituted the control and were given a placebo and the other half made up the experimental group and were treated with Chelidonium 3X. This was a double blind study with the medicine being dispensed on a random basis by a qualified pharmacist. After commencement of the trial venous blood was collected once a month for three consecutive months from both the control and experimental groups. The participants were asked to make no changes to their normal lifestyle. Statistical analysis of the results using paired T-tests revealed no statistical difference between the initial and final total cholesterol or ratio reading of the control group. However, with the experimental group a statistical difference was noted between both the initial and final total cholesterol reading / M

The prophylactic treatment of bovine mastitis using homoeopathic nosode therapy

Farrow, Gregory Alan January 1997 (has links)
A dissertation submitted in partial compliance with the requirements for the Master's Degree in Technology: Homoeopathy, Technikon Natal, 1997. / The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of homoeopathic nos ode therapy as a prophylaxis for bovine mastitis. It was hypothesised that the nos ode would decrease the somatic cell counts in milk samples taken from the experimental group and hence the incidence of clinical and subclinical mastitis. A placebo-controlled double-blind experimental design was chosen. The sample comprised 69 Friesland cows selected from a dairy farm in the Karkloof area of KwaZulu-Natal and was divided randomly into two groups of approximately equal size. Each group was tagged, thus easily identified for treatment purposes. During the trial the two groups intermingled freely, and were therefore exposed to the same external influences. The medication and placebo were provided in identical 50 ml bottles, each labelled with a code corresponding to one of the groups. For each treatment, five millilitres from each bottle were / M

The homoeopathic treatment of chronic sinusitis

Sengpiehl, Monika January 1994 (has links)
Dissertation submitted in partial compliance with the requirements for the Master's Degree in Technology: Homoeopathy, Technikon Natal, 2005. / The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reaction of homoeopathic Luffa Operculata and a combination of Kalium Bichromicum and Cinnabaris on chronic sinusitis patients, with reference to the patients' perception of the treatment and the physical appearance of the nasal mucosa during treatment in order to determine the effectiveness of the two modes of treatment. Fourty patients were randomly selected and divided into two experimental groups . The study was double blind. The one group received Luffa Operculata and the other group received a combination of Kalium Bichromicum and Cinnabaris. Questionnaires were answered before and during the four month treatment period in order to assess the patients perception of the treatment. The physical appearance of the nasal mucosa was inspected on a monthly basis using a nasal speculum. Eight patients dropped out over the four month period. All data obtained from the questionnaires was depicted on spreadsheets and subsequently analysed using frequency tables, cross tabulation ,. Mann-Whitney-U-Test and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed that both modes of treatment were equally effective in reducing the sinusitis headaches, with Luffa Operculata having a 44.1% decrease and Kalium 8ichromicum and Cinnabaris having a 37.3% decrease. The Mann-Whitney-U-Test was done within each group and showed values of P=O.033 and P=O.31 respectively, thereby indicating a statistically significant difference. There was no significant difference between the groups. However Luffa Operculata's results were more positive with respect to post-nasal drip, facial swelling, nasal mucosal swelling and nasal mucosal colour. The most dramatic difference in results occurred in the analysis of the fatigue data, where Luffa Operculata had a 44% decrease and Kalium 8ichromicum and Cinnabar is only had a 6% decrease. / M

The effect of a homoeopathic complex (Sil-Sel-Hep-K-Lap-Puls) on acne vulgaris

Lee, Monique January 1997 (has links)
Dissertation submitted in partial compliance with the requirements for the Master's Degree in Technology: Homoeopathy, Technikon Natal, 1997. / The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a homoeopathic acne complex Sil-Sel-Hep-K-Lap-Puls, which is an abbreviation of its components - Silicea 30CH, Selenium 9CH, Hepar sulphuris 30CH, Kali bromatum 9CH, Arctium lappa 3CH, and Pulsatilla 30CH, in the treatment of acne vulgaris. This study is a double blind randomised placebo-controlled clinical evaluation. Convenience sampling was employed to draw 34 patients, of both sex, median age 21 years from the greater Durban area. Those patients suffering from Acne fulminans, Acne rosacea and Conglobate acne or receiving hormonal, vitamin, Schussler tissue salts, antibiotics and other acne treatments that would affect the acne vulgaris would not be accepted into the treatment. There were 34 patients of which 16 constituted the control group and received only placebo. The remaining 18 were the experimental group and were treated with the homoeopathic acne complex. The homoeopathic acne complex was prepared by the homoeopathic laboratory, Pharma natura. The effect of the homoeopathic acne complex was measured in terms of the reduction in the total number oflesions ie. The Leeds Technique for assessing acne vulgaris - the counting technique. / M

Purchasing and inventory management in a homoeopathic practice

05 February 2014 (has links)
M.Dip.Tech. / Due to the fact that the homoeopathic practice is both a medical service and. a small retail business, the homoeopath has to manage both these aspects well to ensure a' successful practice. Some homoeopathic students are of the opinion that at the end of their formal education at the Technikon, they do not have sufficient training in business matters, to be able to manage a practice efficiently. Unfortunately, no literature is available that cover the management of the homoeopathic practice, especially to assist a newly qualified or new practitioner in this task. Apart from this, the available literature on management is very broad and relates to many aspects of different types of businesses. Management of the homoeopathic practice is therefore a suitable topic for research. A dissertation of this kind is limited in' respect of time and space and would not allow a detailed study of all the management issues discussed in management literature. The objective of this study is therefore narrowed to research only two of these aspects, namely purchasing and inventory management. The study highlights the role and importance of each of the mentioned aspects, states their objectives and includes a discussion of the processes involved with the operation and management of these aspects. All examples and applications throughout the study are made with direct relation to the homoeopathic practice. At the end of this study a short summary of the results that were obtained through the study is given. A model is also compiled as a guide to practitioners in the management of the purchasing and inventories aspects of their practices.

Key factors for the use of homoeopathic remedies as an adjunct in asthma management

Tak, Eugene Lawrence January 2000 (has links)
Dissertation submitted in partial compliance with the requirements for the Master's Degree in Technology: Homoeopathy, Technikon Natal, 2000. / This study aimed to evaluate the use of homoeopathic remedies, as an adjunct to allopathic medicines.in the management of asthma. A.double blind randomised placebo-controlled design was used in the-trial, Thirty-two patients who were medically diagnosed suffering from atopic asthma took part in.the.study. Certain limiting criteria such. as. age, smoking, pregnancy were used to focus the patients into a more homogenous group. The patients selected for this trial were using only salbutamel; a bronchodilator, in a metered unit dose inhaler to treat their asthmatic symptoms. Limited use of additional medication was allowed, if asthmatic symptoms were exacerbated during the trial. Both subjective and objective records were used to determine the efficacy of the homoeopathic medications used. The subjective data were collected using the Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (Marks, et al. 1992). Objective data were collected using daily Peak Expiratory Flow readings, salbutamol inhaler Pump Usage and Asthma Severity Scores (Woolcock and Jenkins, 1991). / M
