Hosea Ballou, preacher of universal salvation

Cassara, Ernest January 1957 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D)--Boston University / This dissertation is devoted to a study of the life and thought of Hosea Ballou (1771-1852), the most prominent of the leaders of American Universalism. No major work has been published in this field since 1889; there has never been a careful examination of his thought and an attempt to trace its sources. Ballou was the son of a Calvinistic Baptist minister. At eighteen he was converted to Universalism and began preaching the new "heresy" in about 1791 on a Calvinistic basis. Between 1791 and 1795 Ballou's thought went through a radical transformation. This study attempts to show that the resultant unitarianism of Ballou was the fruit of his reading of Ethan Allen's deistical work, Reason Only Oracle of Man. Allen, with his great stress on reason, destroyed Ballou's faith in the doctrines of the trinity and the divinity of Christ, the infinity of sin, and the traditional theories of the atonement. With the help of Charles Chauncy's Salvation of All Men, which justified not only his belief in Universal salvation but also helped him to substitute the Arian for the trinitarian view of Christ, and to view the atonement as the reconciliation of man to God and not vice versa; and Ferdinand Olivier Petitpierrets Thoughts on the Divine Goodness, which helped him to see Christ's atonement as an expression of God's love, and also gave him a firm base for a theory of determinism; Ballou began the reconstruction of his religious thought. His first sermon on a unitarian and Arian base was preached in 1795. Within ten years, through the power of his argumentation, and against the opposition of the prominent Universalist John Murray, Ballou had converted the Universalist ministry to Unitarianism. In 1805 his new thought was fully systematized in! Treatise on Atonement, a brilliant piece of reasoning and debating expressed in the language of rural America [TRUNCATED]

Reading the book of Hosea in service of life : a paradigm for the prophetic church fifteen years after a democratic South Africa.

Volanie, Euodia. January 2011 (has links)
When the liberative paradigm of the Bible is given a privileged position in the South African context, then it can function as a tool from which the prophetic church can glean resources. The heart of this thesis, therefore, endeavours to provide a biblical resource for the church in South Africa whose prophetic vision has become dormant in a context where socioeconomic dilemmas are structurally based. This resource is created from the prophetic book of Hosea which has traditionally been treated in isolation from any socioeconomic issues. However, this dominant interpretation of the book of Hosea has been challenged in recent scholarship with favourable results, especially in combination with interdisciplinary approaches. The theoretical framework of Vital Theology has therefore been employed with its interdisciplinary approach, and integrated with a biblical methodology. Focusing on the marriage-harlotry metaphor of Hosea, this thesis demonstrate that a socio-historical and literary reading of the metaphor can provide the church with a prophetic vision to address socioeconomic dilemmas in South Africa, fifteen years after democracy. / Thesis (M.Th.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2011.

A Study of the Literary Qualities in the Diary of Hosea Stout

Ellsworth, Richard G. 01 January 1952 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this thesis is to present the diaries of Hosea Stout in the light of literary criticism and analysis. Two questions have been asked: do the diaries contain literary quality by revealing the characteristics, attitudes, abilities, and feelings of Hosea Stout; and, does Hosea Stout's style contain the literary elements necessary to distinquish it from ordinary communication. Passages from the diaries have been quoted and analyzed to answer these questions. Conclusions are made after each analysis, after each chapter, and at the end of the thesis. This study revealed that, in spite of Hosea Stout's spelling difficulties and stylistic Imperfections, his journals, in actual content and style, often contain literary value. They record Hosea Stout's personal characteristics in their content, and in style are seen to contain narrative and poetic elements. Hosea Stout successfully uses many literary methods and devices. He falls short only when recording feelings of sorrow; in such Instances, he becomes extremely sentimental.Within his diaries, Hosea Stout vividly records his observations of Nature, events, and people. He seems always interested in going beyond physical detail, and in supplying human meaning to otherwise bare facts. Writing spontaneously, with only his natural skill and ability to aid him, he presents an intense, concentrated, interpreted picture of life. Acknowledging this, it follows that his journals, though outwardly imperfect, inwardly attain literary value.

Heino, Gerrit 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis compares idolatry in Hosea with the New Age movement. A number of pericopes from Hosea are explained in view of idolatry. Canaanite nature worship had entered into Israelite religion. Among the kings of Israel in the eighth century BC, Jeroboam I in particular was the moving force behind the development of Bethel and Dan into national sanctuaries. This development can be seen as the immediate cause for idolatry in Hosea's days. Also nowadays knowledge of God is very poor. There are fewer and fewer churchgoers, but semi-religions like the New Age movement attract a hugh number of people. Elements from the realm of thought of idolatry at Hosea's time appear to correspond closely with concepts that are essential in the New Age movement. / Old Testament & Ancient Near Eastern Studies

Executive pastors' perception of leadership and management competencies needed for local church administration

Woodruff, Timothy Rowland 14 May 2004 (has links)
This dissertation examines leadership and management competencies of Southern Baptist mega-church executive pastors. The study discusses the issue of limited research on the position of the executive pastor. Resources related to this position are cited. Possible reasons for the emergence of this position are examined including the minister's dilemma of being both shepherd and administrator and the issue of leadership training as preparation for the pastorate. Also provided is a theological and philosophical foundation for the leadership and management practices. Servant leadership as the biblical foundation for leadership and secular leadership models appropriate for church administration are reviewed. Research findings on ministerial effectiveness and the minister as manager are included. The available research on the role of the executive pastor is analyzed to reveal the practices posited in current literature. The methodological design is based on the 1988 research of Stephen Boersma. This study identifies and analyzes the self evaluated importance of leadership and management competencies. Demographic data and professional experience are studied to identify relationships between the executive pastors' response and his background. The analysis of findings presents the raw data, displays and statistical analysis. A description of how the raw data was compiled and an evaluation of the research design is provided. The analysis relates to the demographic data of the population, the rank order of the importance ratings, a comparative analysis of this study's findings with the finds of the Boersma study, an analysis of the demographic characteristics that are predictors of the importance ratings and a brief study of the findings related to the subjects' self-reported job satisfaction, performance and preparation in the role of the executive pastor. This research contends that there are certain leadership and management competencies necessary for the management and administration of the church. The executive pastor will employ these practices as foundational to the position. There is also a relationship of demographic characteristics to the importance rating. Finally, pastors and executive pastors tend to agree on the importance of these competencies. / This item is only available to students and faculty of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
