Among the most conflicting points of these discussions are waste treatment and the risks they offer to the population and the environment. There is however a general agreement : the lack of data on the subject. The purpose of this work is to generate data about hospital waste generation and its patogenicity. The methodology was divided into two phases: ln the first one waste generation in the hospital as a whole was studied and its day rate its mass flux was obtained generation and in the second phase the Emergency and the Ward in three different hospitals, a small, a medium size and a large one, with the objective of obtaining the respectives wastes generation rate. Clinical laboratory tests were employed in both phases, on wastes samples derived from potencially hazardous areas and not hazardous ones / Mestrado / Saneamento / Mestre em Engenharia Civil
