Abstract: The purpose of this study was to obtain a better knowledge of the characteristics of the couples attending the infertility services at two University HospitaIs campinas, Brazil.A total of 2331 clinical files of couples attended at the UNICAMP and PUCCAMP hospitaIs from 1980 to 1992 were analyzed. This retrospective study analyses data on sociodemographic variables, reasons for infertility and discontinuation rate . About 60% of the women were younger than 30 years old, and more than half of the attended couples had primary infertility. The most frequent reason for infertility was tubal factor (53%), followed by ovulation disorders (30%). Women seeking sterilization reversal were responsible for the higher number of tubal factor diagnosis, representing 24% of tubal factor cases. The discontinuation rate on both services was 65,4%. The variables significantly related to discontinuation of the work-up were being attended at the UNICAMP hospital and having a history of tubal sterilization. We conclude that attitudes to prevent tubal factor are necessary, like preventing Gynecologic infections and improving tubal sterilization criteria, and services offering a wide range of reversible contraceptive methods available to the population / Mestrado / Tocoginecologia / Mestre em Medicina
