  • The Global ETD Search service is a free service for researchers to find electronic theses and dissertations. This service is provided by the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations.
Our metadata is collected from universities around the world. If you manage a university/consortium/country archive and want to be added, details can be found on the NDLTD website.

A microscopic model of hypernuclei

Johnstone, John Allistair January 1982 (has links)
A separable potential model is constructed to describe the coupled ΣN-AN systems. From this the Σ single particle potential is developed including Pauli effects. The momentum space Schroedinger equation is then solved self-consistently for the complex eigenvalues of 1s and lp state Σ° hypernuclei. Arising from two quite distinct mechanisms these states are all found to be long lived. In s-states, Pauli suppression of the ΣN->AN conversion reduces the widths by as much as 50% from classical estimates in heavy nuclei, and in light nuclei produces widths as small as 1.8 MeV inΣ[sub=o;sup=5]He. In p-states, Pauli effects are relatively unimportant and the strong absorption of the potential creates extremely narrow quasi-bound states in the Σ continuum. / Science, Faculty of / Physics and Astronomy, Department of / Graduate

The production of hypernuclei via the weak interaction

Van Niekerk, David Douglas 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc (Physics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / In this thesis we present a relativistic formalism for the description of hypernuclei production via the weak interaction. It will be shown that the cross section can be written as the contraction of a leptonic and hadronic tensor if we model the interaction as a quasifree process. The hadronic tensor is written in a model-independent way in terms of thirteen nuclear structure functions. A Born term model is used to describe the underlying elementary hyperon production process. The bound state wave functions of the hyperon and nucleon are calculated within a relativistic mean-field approximation. Together with the relativistic kinematics a fully relativistic framework for experimental predictions is constructed and a specific cross section calculation is discussed.
