Heuristic algorithms for wireless mesh network planningKhaled, Shah Mostafa January 2012 (has links)
Technologies like IEEE 802.16j wireless mesh networks are drawing increasing attention of
the research community. Mesh networks are economically viable and may extend services
such as Internet to remote locations. This thesis takes interest into a planning problem in
IEEE 802.16j networks, where we need to establish minimum cost relay and base stations to
cover the bandwidth demand of wireless clients. A special feature of this planning problem
is that any node in this network can send data to at most one node towards the next hop,
thus traffic flow is unsplittable from source to destination.
We study different integer programming formulations of the problem. We propose four
types of heuristic algorithms that uses greedy, local search, variable neighborhood search
and Lagrangian relaxation based approaches for the problem. We evaluate the algorithms
on database of network instances of 500-5000 nodes, some of which are randomly generated
network instances, while other network instances are generated over geometric distribution.
Our experiments show that the proposed algorithms produce satisfactory result
compared to benchmarks produced by generalized optimization problem solver software. / x, 131 leaves : ill. ; 29 cm

The IEEE 802.16 standard popularly known as WiMAX is at the forefront of the technological
drive. Achieving high system throughput in these networks is challenging due to
interference which limits concurrent transmissions. In this thesis, we study routing and link
scheduling inWiMAX mesh networks. We present simple joint routing and link scheduling
algorithms that have outperformed most of the existing proposals in our experiments. Our
session based routing and links scheduling produced results approximately 90% of a trivial
lower bound.
We also study the problem of quality of service (QoS) provisioning in WiMAX mesh
networks. QoS has become an attractive area of study driven by the increasing demand
for multimedia content delivered wirelessly. To accommodate the different applications,
the IEEE 802.16 standard defines four classes of service. In this dissertation, we propose a
comprehensive scheme consisting of routing, link scheduling, call admission control (CAC)
and channel assignment that considers all classes of service. Much of the work in the
literature considers each of these problems in isolation. Our routing schemes use a metric
that combines interference and traffic load to compute routes for requests while our link
scheduling ensures that the QoS requirements of admitted requests are strictly met. Results
from our simulation indicate that our routing and link scheduling schemes significantly

An abstract of the thesis of Bosi Chen for the Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering presented Aug 1st, 2012. Title: Spectrum Regrowth for OFDM-based LTE and WiMAX Systems. In OFDM-based (Orthogonal Frequency Dimension Multiplexing) LTE (Long Term Evolution) and WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) Systems, one of the critical components is the RF power amplifier. With current technologies, RF power amplifiers are not perfectly linear. The nonlinearity of an RF power amplifier is one of the main concerns in RF power amplifier design. The nonlinearity control is described by the out-of-band power emission levels, and the nonlinearity of an RF power amplifier is usually described by IP3 (the third-order intercept point). However, there is need of a clear relationship or expression between the out-of-band power emission level and IP3 for LTE and WiMAX Systems, which helps the RF designers to choose components. This thesis presents the analysis of the nonlinear effect of an RF amplifier in LTE and WiMAX Systems, and the derivation of the expressions for the estimated out-of-band emission levels for LTE and WiMAX signals in terms of IP3 and the power level of the signal. The result will be helpful for RF engineers in the design and test of RF power amplifiers in LTE and WiMAX Systems.
