O ambiente intelectual luso, em virtude de ter articulado as idéias modernas com a tradição católica, é comumente identificado, nas historiografias brasileira e portuguesa, como um caso à parte, contraposto à uma suposta Modernidade européia - uniforme e radicalmente inovadora. Em 1772, a Coroa Portuguesa, na intenção de modernizar Portugal, empreendeu a reforma da Universidade de Coimbra. A reforma, considerada um marco no processo de assimilação das idéias modernas no País, institucionalizou muitos dos princípios ilustrados em voga na República das Letras. Por meio da análise dos Estatutos da Universidade de Coimbra (1772), especificamente da reformulação da Faculdade de Leis e da criação da Faculdade de Filosofia, examinou-se a natureza da proposta estatutária, comparando seus princípios com as idéias veiculadas na Encyclopédie e com algumas obras de filósofos franceses. Adota-se no trabalho uma noção plural de Iluminismo, pois o movimento intelectual em voga no Setecentos, longe de ter sido uniforme, apresentou diversas tendências. Assim, diante dos vários Iluminismos da Europa, sugere-se a existência de um Iluminismo português. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The qualification of the movement of ideas in Portugal in century XVIII is a controversial subject. The Portuguese intellectual environment, because of the organized modern ideas with the tradition catholic, in general is identified, in the Brazilian and Portuguese history, as a different matter, opposed to the supposed Modernity European – identical and radically innovative. In 1772 the Portuguese Crown, in the intention of modernizing Portugal, undertook the reform of the University of Coimbra. The reform, considered a landmark in the process of assimilation of the modern ideas in the country, institutionalized many of the illustrated principles in the Republic of the Letters. Throughout the analysis of the Statutes of the University of Coimbra (1772), specifically of the reform of the College of Laws and the creation of the College of Philosophy, it was examined the nature of the proposal statutory comparing its principles with the ideas propagated in the Encyclopédie and some works of French philosophers. A plural notion of Enlightenment is assumed in the work; therefore the intellectual movement in the Seven hundred, far from being uniform, presented diverse trends. Therefore, due to some Enlightenments of Europe, it is suggested the existence of a Portuguese Enlightenment.
