The "Documentary Reading Model for Indexing of Scientific Articles by Fujita (2003a) is a proposal of improvement and evolution of the methodology of indexing through the indexer's metacognition (non-automatized behaviour as the reader is conscious of how the reading is being carried out), using the knowledgement of textual structures of the reader, relying on strategies of systematic approach of concepts offered in his education. Considering the learning of the documentary reading process in classroom, it is searched into the applicability of this Model as pedagogical resource to apprentice indexers. By means of introspective technique of data collecting of the Interative Verbal Protocol, observing the process of apprehending the methodology, this research reveals difficulties by the apprentice and his development towards more satisfactory grades of carring out the indexing task. It was chosen three students from the second class of Librarianship that had not attended the discipline "Indexing and Abstracting" and were intested in taking part in the applying of the Verbal Protocol combined with the indexing task. The analysis of the Verbal Protocol's transcriptions shows that the apprentices had difficulties in identifying the concepts of this Model: to choose terms to represent the concepts, to understand the terminology of the medical science and to to set up the terms' form (singular or phrases). Such difficulty is relating to the using of the Reading Model adapted from the original where there was inversion of the concepts action and object. Um dos aspectos concernentes à política de indexação diz respeito à conversão retrospectiva de dados e à compatibilidade de linguagem de indexação entre integrantes de um mesmo sistema cooperativo. Com o advento das tecnologias, foi possível pensar em cooperação entre bibliotecas e, conseqüentemente, em catalogação cooperativa. Esse novo panorama da catalogação trouxe um grande avanço para área: agilização da catalogação, diminuindo o tempo de serviço e otimizando esse processo, uma vez que há o aproveitamento de registros bibliográficos copiados de outras bases de dados. No entanto, houve outra conseqüência: o processo de identificação de assunto por meio da análise foi simplificado, reduzindo-o a uma simples operação de cópia , contemplando a forma do documento, e deixando de lado o conteúdo . Essa simplificação da prática nos remete a uma questão teórica e conceitual muito discutida, porém ainda não sedimentada, na área de Biblioteconomia: a conceituação de indexação e catalogação de assunto. A tese dessa pesquisa é considerar que as incoerências cometidas durante a indexação são resultados de desconhecimento da catalogação de forma e de conteúdo pelo bibliotecário, da ausência de política e manual de indexação para bibliotecas que serviriam como orientações ao trabalho do indexador e instrumento para sua formação em serviço, além de uma sistemática para identificação de conceitos. / Abstract: The indexing policy must be represented by means of a philosophy that reflects the system's aims. One of the aspects concerning the indexing policy is relating to the data retrospective conversion and the compatibility of indexing language among members of a same cooperative system. The appearing of the technologies made it possible to think of cooperation among libraries and, consequentely, of cooperative cataloguing. The new scene of the cataloguing brought a great advance to the field: agility of cataloguing, decreasing the time of service and optimizing this process, since it is possible the utilization of bibliographic records copied from other databases. Nevertheless, there were other consequence: the process of subject's cataloguing (indexing) was simplified reducing it to a simple operation of "copy", taking into account the document's "form", disregarding the "content". This practice simplification refers to a theoretical and high discussed conceptual matter, not yet well sedimented in Librarianship: the concept of indexing and subject cataloguing. The thesis of this research considers that the incoherences made during the indexing are results of non-discerment between descriptive cataloguing and subject cataloguing by the librarian, of the absence of policy and handbook of indexing for libraries which would be useful as guidelines to the indexer's work and instrument to his education in service, besides a systematics to identify concepts. We intend to present a theoretical methodological proposal for the working up of guidelines of indexing policy for the building of cooperative catalogs in university libraries, by means of the indexing process, from the socio-cognitive approach with librarians and users in the context of the university library, and in the conceptual perspective of the theoretical aspects that involve the indexing and the subject cataloguing. / Doutor

Resumo: A indexação automática é um processo complexo e delegar a atividade de atribuição de termos aos sistemas automáticos requer análise, tanto dos métodos, quanto das características dos instrumentos de indexação. Desse modo, propomos investigar a atuação de vocabulário controlado neste processo a partir da análise dos resultados de aplicação do vocabulário ThesAgro no Sistema de Indización SemiAutomatica (SISA), com objetivos de identificar as características que definem e distinguem os tipos de vocabulários; analisar propostas metodológicas e sistemas de indexação; aplicar o ThesAgro no sistema SISA em análise comparativa com a indexação manual da Biblioteca Nacional de Agricultura (BINAGRI), e analisar os fatores intervenientes que apontam os problemas ocasionados à indexação automática. De modo geral, buscamos contribuir com o desenvolvimento do tema ao levantar subsídios para adaptação de vocabulários controlados. Realizamos uma revisão teórica sobre sistemas de indexação automática e um experimento aplicando o ThesAgro no sistema SISA com 100 artigos da área agrícola, especificamente sobre fruticultura. Utilizamos, como parâmetro de avaliação, a indexação manual realizada pela BINAGRI e análise comparativa com os resultados de pesquisa anterior em que se avaliou o desempenho do vocabulário Descritores em Ciências da Saúde (DeCS) no referido sistema. A partir da análise dos resultados constatamos que o vocabulário condiciona os resultados do processo de indexação automática e, portanto, é necessário compreendê-lo, considerando os métodos de identificação das unidades representativas da informação, aplicação de tratamento linguístico, características da área do conhecimento, relações semânticas, idioma, atualização, uso de vocabulários... (Resumo completo, clicara acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Automatic indexing is a complex process, and delegating the attribution of terms to automatic systems requires analyzing not only the methods, but also the features of indexing instruments. Thereby, we propose to investigate the role of controlled vocabulary in such process, based on the analysis of results from the application of ThesAgro vocabulary in the Semi-Automatic Indexing System (SISA - Sistema de Indización SemiAutomatica -), with the purposes of identifying the characteristics which define and distinguish the types of vocabularies; analyzing methodological proposals and indexing systems; applying the ThesAgro in the SISA, making a comparative analysis related to the manual indexing by the National Library of Agriculture (BINAGRI - Biblioteca Nacional de Agricultura), and analyzing the intervening factors pointing to the occurrence of problems concerning automatic indexing. As a general matter, we seek to contribute to the development of this theme by raising subsidies for adapting controlled vocabularies. We have performed a theoretical review on automatic indexing systems, and an experiment applying the ThesAgro in the SISA, with 100 articles on agriculture , specifically about fruit production. The manual indexing performed by BINAGRI and the comparative analysis with the results from a previous research, which evaluated the performance of the vocabulary from the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS - Descritores em Ciências da Saúde) in the before mentioned system, have served as the evaluation parameter. The analysis of results allows us to conclude that the vocabulary conditions the results of the automatic indexing process. Thus, it is necessary to understand it, considering the identification methods of the information representative units, application of linguistic treatment, features of the...
