A principal questão a ser investigada aqui consiste em averiguar em que medida os valores do individualismo, expressos na linguagem da saúde mental, são compartilhados entre mulheres das camadas médias e populares diagnosticadas com o Transtorno Depressivo, na cidade do Recife. Assim, exploramos os significados e as causas do Transtorno Depressivo na narrativa de sofrimento das mulheres entrevistadas, buscando estabelecer algumas relações entre seus estados subjetivos e as novas configurações da individualidade. Neste sentido, utilizamos a metodologia qualitativa, combinando a técnica de entrevista narrativa com entrevista em profundidade para investigar os significados e causas da depressão na percepção de nove mulheres com diagnóstico clínico de depressão, usuárias de serviço público e privado de saúde mental, no Recife. Na pesquisa de campo, constatamos que a linguagem da saúde mental é amplamente utilizada nas interpretações que as informantes elaboram sobre seus estados subjetivos. Dessa maneira, já que a saúde mental se constitui como uma nova linguagem para explicar e lidar com os problemas da vida, tanto entre as mulheres das camadas médias como entre as mulheres das camadas populares, podemos inferir que ela representa uma transformação na individualidade contemporânea, agora entendida através do universo “psi”. / This paper analyzes the suffering narrative of women diagnosed with Depressive Disorder in order to interpret the relation between depression and the new configurations in the contemporary individuality. The main question to be investigated here is to verify to what extent the values of individualism expressed in the language of mental health are shared among women of the middle and popular classes diagnosed with Depressive Disorder in the city of Recife. Thus, we explore the meanings and causes of Depressive Disorder in suffering narrative of the interviewed women, seeking to establish some relationships between their subjective states and the new configurations of individuality. In this sense, we used the qualitative methodology, combining the technique of narrative interview with in-depth interview to investigate the meanings and causes of depression in the perception of nine women with clinical diagnosis of depression, users of public and private mental health services in Recife. In the field research, we find that the language of mental health is widely used in the interpretations that the informants elaborate on their subjective states. In this way, since mental health is a new language to explain and deal with the problems of life, both among the middle-classes and lower-classes women, we can infer that it represents a transformation in contemporary individuality, now understood through the "psy" universe.
