Designing complex, interactive, architectural systems with CIAS-DM| A model-based, human-centered, design & analysis methodology

Manganelli, Joseph Charles 04 March 2014 (has links)

The built environment increasingly contributes to improving human health, well-being, and performance in measurable, predictable, and tailorable ways. Achieving high-performance environmental systems requires real-time-interactive sensing, monitoring, actuation, and communication subsystems, as well as real-time interactions of these environmental systems with their users and other internal and external systems. Developing theories, constructs, methods, and tools necessary for designing such high-performance, complex, interactive systems is an active area of research.

This dissertation focused on methods and tools for representing the cognitive and physical affordances of complex, interactive, architectural systems (CIAS). The Complex, Interactive, Architectural Systems Design Methodology (CIAS-DM) was proposed as a method and tool for helping designers uncover and document the scope of proposed CIAS. CIAS-DM was evaluated qualitatively. This project used the design of a `smart' mattress in a patient room `smart' bed/mattress/over-the-bed table ecosystem as the basis for a series of design cases. Fourteen clinicians participated as subject matter experts. Four research associates participated as raters. The results of evaluating CIAS-DM indicate that CIAS-DM is useful for scoping CIAS design challenges. The contributions of this dissertation are: 1) identifying and characterizing CIAS; 2) introducing the systems modeling language (SysML) and a cognitive work analysis (CWA) representational and analytic methods into architecture; 2) mapping constructs and methods from CWA into SysML; and 3) providing these methods and tools in an integrated package appropriate for those designing CIAS.

Industrial architecture and politics in Wilhelmine Germany

Jefferies, Matthew Martin January 1991 (has links)
This thesis examines the industrial architecture of Imperial Germany in the context of the wider economic and political power struggles of the Wilhelmine era. Written against the backdrop of a lively and ongoing debate on the relative 'modernity' of the Kaiserreich, the main focus falls on two separate but related movements, which campaigned to improve the character of industrial architecture for political, commercial and environmental, as well as aesthetic reasons: the 'Bund Heimatschutz', founded in 1904, and the 'Werkbund' , established three years later. Both organisations developed in opposition to historicism in late 19th century architecture and design. The reformers, who included laymen as well as architects, sought an architecture more "worthy' of the German 'Bürgertum' than the hybrid historical styles, applied to buildings regardless of function or location, which had come to characterise the German 'Gründerzeit'. The 'Heimatschutz' movement lobbied successfully for the introduction of legislation to protect the landscape from the worst ravages of urbanisation and industrial development. The thesis suggests that the general view of 'Heimatschutz' activists, as 'cultural pessimists' opposed to modernisation in all its guises, is inaccurate, and highlights the more pragmatic strand of 'Heimatschutz' thought, which influenced the design of many industrial structures in the 1900s, particularly those erected by local authorities. The bulk of the thesis, however, concentrates on the 'Werkbund'; an organisation whose members proved remarkably successful at winning commissions from Germany industry in the years before 1918. Particular stress is placed on the role played in the organisation by the politician Friedrich Naumann and his followers. It is argued that the 'Werkbund's policy of promoting 'quality' in the German workplace was an integral part of Naumann's political reform programme. The thesis describes the adoption of the 'Werkbund's progressive architecture by a number of leading manufacturing firms, and seeks an explanation in the rivalries which divided German industry at the turn of the century. It concludes with a short study of architecture, industry and municipal politics in Delmenhorst, a small town in the throes of modernisation.

The application of the principles of interior design in the factory environment

Fromage, Stephen Paul January 1993 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Interior Design))--Cape Technikon, 1993. / The origins of the research activities which constitute this dissertation can be traced to a proposal in 1991 to write a history assignment on the retrospective influence of interior design in the factory environment. A subsequent search for relevant information proved largely unsuccessful, resulting in the temporary suspension of further investigations into the topic. However, these enquiries provoked a piquant interest in the feasibility of applying interior design principles in the factory environment. The challenge presented by the lack of reference to the role of interior design in the factory environment, in conjunction with a dearth of literature pertinent to the history of industrial architecture, served as impetus for the background investigation which led to a successful proposal that my National Higher Diploma be based on the practical design of factory interiors.

Stripped - a vehicle disassembly plant

Snyders, Marius 01 December 2011 (has links)
The key theme of this research document is the negative impact of an increasingly expanding motor vehicle industry. The urban infrastructure and dependence on individual transportation has become an integral part of everyday life for many. Continual growth in the numbers of new automobiles within cities has resulted in the disposal of old and broken (end-of-life) automobiles. This dissertation investigates the potential of industrial architecture in assisting with the regulation of waste management through adaptive re-use of lost spaces and materials. The main objectives include recycling, recycling-awareness and education, re-use of materials, architecture promoting low embodied energy products, the production of energy and social consolidation. Due to the high embodied energy of automobiles, the different range of materials used and the availability of discarded automobiles found within the surrounding industrial area of Pretoria West, a study of the recycling of automobiles will form the central theme for this dissertation. A Vehicle Disassembly Plant, which would be located within the Pretoria West Industrial Area – West of the City of Tshwane CBD, would, by means of waste management, form the basis of the architectural intervention. / Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Architecture / unrestricted

Sousa, Wayne Almeida de 07 May 2010 (has links)
This research deals with the preservation of industrial heritage in the city of São Paulo. The Alpargatas complex was chosen as study case, because it is one of the most important examples of industrial architecture in São Paulo of the beginning of Twenty Century, in the Mooca district. The complex stands out because of its variety and architectural quality, historical importance, construction techniques and materials used. It is an intricate subject; this research will discuss questions related to industrial heritage and preservation criteria, and propose, taking Alpargatas as a base, guidelines for interventions in industrial buildings, showing that it is possible to adapt them to present needs, respecting their characteristics.

Estudo do patrimônio industrial com uso fabril da cidade de São Paulo / Heritage of manufacturing buildings still with original use in the city of São Paulo

Rodrigues, Angela Rosch 30 March 2011 (has links)
This study examines the issue of use in the preservation of active industrial heritage based on the theories of the field of preservation considering three example listed by CONPRESP in the city of São Paulo: Vidraria Santa Marina (now Saint - Gobain) in 2009; Companhia Goodyear do Brasil (the ancient Fábrica Maria Zélia) in 1992; and Companhia Melhoramentos de São Paulo in 2009. The research has focused on the complexity of the relationship between the dynamic nature of industrial activity which requires often technological adaptations and theories and international documents about preservation heritage. The research seeks for, in one hand, the meaning of the idea of heritage for the owners, and in the other, the knowledge about the industrial process production by preservation public agencies, identifying here reasons for conflict.

Preservação e restauro urbano: teoria e prática de intervenção em sítios industriais de interesse cultural / Urban preservation and restoration: theory and practice in the industrial cultural sites intervention

Rufinoni, Manoela Rossinetti 01 April 2009 (has links)
Interventions in urban industrial heritage with cultural interest usually are made under the wrong assumption that those spaces are characterized as spare ground available for new uses, in spite of their historical, aesthetic and memorial pre-existence. From that fact, this research discuss the appliance of the theoretical principles of preservation and restoration in the practice of intervention in this heritage. The first part of this study shows the investigative and cognitive ways that concurred to the developing of concepts, theories and principles surrounding restoration and preservation of urban heritage. The second part takes on the major existing problems when dealing with industrial sites and analyses some intervention cases, in order to discuss the reasons that make difficult the appliance of the previously showed principles, and also suggests ways of achieving criteria for the conduct of future projects, like the urban project Diagonal Sul, in São Paulo, Brazil.

Le patrimoine industriel - minier Facteur de développement territorial : Complexité et enjeux en Roumanie, en comparaison avec la France et la Grande-Bretagne / The industrial - mining heritage Factor of territorial development : Complexity and challenges in Romania, in comparison with France and Great Britain

Pascu, Gabriela 02 June 2015 (has links)
Thesis topic is of great interest : What is the future of former mining settlements, small and medium, from Romania and Europe? What role can have the industrial mining heritage - in this context ? The motivations of the study are multiple: the weak knowledge of the scale and effects of the abandonment of mining areas, the poor knowledge of Romanian industrial- mining heritage, etc.For analyzing the evolution of the Romanian mining industry, it is required its inclusion in the European context, using as references Great Britain and France. The methodology is different depending on the country. The thesis is structured in three parts and conclusions. The first part contains a research of the historical evolution of the mining industry. In the second part, the study is restrained at the three countries: Great Britain, Franceand Romania. Based on English, Scottish and especially French case studies are highlighted working methods and strategies which promote the mining heritage, in the context of territorial development.ln the third part, the study is restrained at Romania. A fïrst step is the inventory of mining settlements from three counties to establish the type portrait of Romanian mining settlement. AIso this part contains the research and the intervention methodology for the Romanian case and the proposing of strategies for the regions of Ghelari, Brad and Jiu Valley. The conclusions of the thesis are diverse from the implications of the mining industry at European level, types of interventions on the mining heritage, economic and social methods, Romanian mining settlements characteristics and similarities in Europe, strategies and recommendations.
