The role and impact of sound labour relations management on the success of football business in South Africa

M.B.A. / Many talented football players had their football career rather cut short or marred by long term of inactiveness, in this country due to their unbecoming behaviour or because of a fall out with the coach. These incidences have been widely reported. Not only do the players lose out under these circumstances but the whole football community as in the club itself, the spectators, the sponsors, the football union, journalists, persons very close to the errant player and the country at large, are compromised as inappropriate ways of managing the situation are exercised. Punitive measures are generally preferred over corrective ones. This undesired state of affairs persisting, as it looks more likely that it will, it will continue to haunt the football industry indefinitely unless appropriate intervention happens. The tonic could be the belated assistance of an astute and empowered labour relations manager in the strategic employee relations of the PSL clubs in general. The absence of guiding regulations and policy framework within which labour relations operations are carried out, gives way to allsorts of inhibitive practices resulting from sentiment-derived decisions. Think about it, where policies lack sentiments rule. Too many roles are generally unfairly entrusted to football coaches. Many football coaching literature and manuals either generate or affirm this notion. Coaches voluntarily take functions that are beyond their capacity. Not all coaches have the skills to motivate players. Those who have such a plus are few. Unfortunately this category of coaches may be thin in other critical aspects of coaching and in employee assistance as well as employee wellness side of things. Irrespective of the relatively high budget needed to accommodate the package of the LRM, the rewards are greater. Going for it is damn worth it, folks!

Bounded Unions: How Restrictive Labor Policies Affect Teachers, Students, and Progressive Politics

The Janus v. AFCSME (2018) decision has fundamentally changed the institutional context for U.S. teachers’ unions. Although this change has the potential to upend education politics and the labor movement more broadly, little research exists to help us predict and conceptualize the consequences of this change. To fill this gap, I first situate teachers’ unions and recent efforts to weaken them within the broader history of the United States labor movement. I then exploit the different timing across states in the passage of restrictive labor policies in a differences-in-differences/event study framework to identify how exposure to a restrictive labor policy affects students, teachers, and progressive politics. I present evidence not only of the productive information sharing role that teachers’ unions play via collective bargaining, but also of the slower and more incremental role of teachers’ unions through their efforts at alliance building and political advocacy for social welfare policies via progressive coalition building.

The Point of Destruction: Sabotage, Speech, and Progressive-Era Politics

Strike waves in the late nineteenth century United States caused widespread property destruction, but strike leaders did not suggest threats to employer property as a comprehensive strategy until the I.W.W. adopted a deliberate program of sabotage. Contrary to historical consensus, sabotage was an intellectually coherent and politically generative response to progressive, technocratic dreams of frictionless social cooperation that would have major consequences for the labor movement. This dissertation treats sabotage as a significant contribution to the intellectual debates that were generated by labor conflict and rapid industrialization and examines its role in shaping federal labor policy. It contends that the suppression of sabotage staked out the limits of acceptable speech and the American political imagination.

Human Factors in the Adoption and Performance of Advanced Manufacturing Technology in Unionized Firms

Some researchers have found that unionized firms are less likely to pursue automation because high wage demands deprive them of the necessary capital required to invest in advanced manufacturing technology (AMT). It has also been suggested that stringent work rules and technology agreements can make the substitution of new technology for union labor too expensive. Others have found, however, that the pursuit of high wage policies and the resultant requirement for improved worker and machine productivity can create a positive environment for technological change. This exploratory study examines the relationships between firm-level union status and the adoption and performance of AMT in the discrete parts durable-goods manufacturing industry. Analyses of our sample, which included Chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analyses and multiple linear regression analyses, revealed a union effect on the adoption of just-in-time technology and a moderately positive union effect on performance. Results of analyses of the impact of union status, firm size and several human factor variables on firm performance are also presented and discussed.
