Atualmente, o legado desse processo histórico é uma paisagem marcadamente industrial, ainda pouco conhecida e valorizada em grande parte devido às tragédias ambientais que atraíram mais a atenção e terminaram se sobrepondo aos aspectos históricos e arquitetônicos relacionados. Buscando uma maior compreensão e reconhecimento da relevância dessa paisagem, esta Dissertação tem como objeto o estudo da formação da paisagem industrial de Cubatão a partir dos fatores históricos e territoriais que resultaram na formação do Polo Industrial, em 1980, destacando dois importantes testemunhos edificados: a antiga Companhia Fabril do Cubatão (depois Companhia Santista de Papel, atual MD Papéis) e, a Usina Henry Borden, na produção de energia. O recorte temporal da pesquisa, embora não desconsidere processos históricos mais amplos, ressalta fatos ocorridos a partir de princípios do século XX, quando se intensifica a modernização da indústria no Brasil, e que por ter maior concentração em São Paulo, atinge também aquela região. A Baixada Santista é composta por nove municípios1, entretanto, aqui o recorte espacial apresentado tem foco nos municípios de Santos e Cubatão, uma vez que o primeiro, detentor de um dos principais portos brasileiros desde o período colonial, foi o grande impulsionador e articulador do processo de desenvolvimento urbano e econômico que resultou na atual configuração da Baixada Santista, em cujo cenário a industrialização ficou centralizada em Cubatão. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The building of the industrial landscape in the district of Cubatão – SP was a result of the process of Brazilian industrial modernization, especially in the early of the twentieth century, when the industrial concentration in the state of São Paulo takes part. Nowadays, the legacy of this process is a landscape notoriously industrial yet little known and valued in great part because of the environmental tragedies that draw more attention and overlapped the historical and architectural related aspects. Searching for a greater understanding and relevance of this landscape, this dissertation has for an object the study of the formation of the industrial landscape of Cubatão starting from territorial factors that resulted in the formation of the Polo Industrial, in 1980, highlighting two important edified testimonies: the old Companhia Fabril do Cubatão (lately Companhia Santista de Papel, presently MD Papéis) and, Usina Henry Borden. The temporary cut of the research, although does not oversees greater historical contexts, highlights facts occurred in the beginning of the twentieth century, when the industrial modernization of Brazil’s industry is intensified, and because it has greater concentration in São Paulo, also reaches that region. The Baixada Santista is composed by nine counties, but, here the presented space cut is focused in the counties of Santos and Cubatão, having in mind that the first, owning one of the most important Brazilian ports since the colonial period, was the main booster and articulador of the urban and economic development processes that resulted in the presently configuration of the Baixada Santista, in which scenario the industrialization was centered in Cubatão.
