Metalls kris och förändring : Svenska metallindustriarbetareförbundets syn på 1970-talskrisen

Hjert, Elias January 2022 (has links)
The 1970s were a crucial time in the economic history of Sweden. This period saw a rapid change in the economic institutions of the country. One of these were the labour unions, especially those representing members of the industrial sector. This second term paper thus seeks to examine the viewpoints of the Svenska metallindustriarbetareförbundet, now known as IF Metall on the crisis causes, their role in it and the solutions they put forward to solve it. This will be done using excerpts from the unions newspaper "Metallarbetaren: organ för Sveriges järn- och metallarbetare" from the years 1974, 1977 and 1980. The paper found that Svenska metallindustriarbetareförbundet saw the 1973 oil embargo, issues within the capitalistic system and later the policies of the government under Thorbjärn Fälldin as the main causes of the crisis. They initially saw themselves as a more of a representative of their members but would move closer to the socialdemocratic party during the crisis. The solutions they put forward included a more proactive industrial policy on the part of the government and increased worker and governmental control over the economy.
