Student Sequence Model| A Temporal Model For Exploring and Predicting Risk From Heterogeneous Student Data

<p> Data models built for analyzing student data often obfuscate temporal relationships for reasons of simplicity, or to aid in generalization. We present a sequence model that is based on temporal relationships in heterogeneous student data as the basis for building predictive models to identify and understand students at risk. The properties of our sequence data model include temporal structure, segmentation, contextualization, and storytelling. To demonstrate the benefits of these properties, we have collected and analyzed 10 years of student data from the College of Computing at UNC Charlotte in a between-semester sequence model, and used data in an introductory course in computer science to build a within-semester sequence model. Our results for the two sequence models show that analytics based on the sequence data model can achieve higher predictive accuracy than non-temporal models with the same data. The sequence model not only outperforms non-temporal models to predict at risk students, but also provides interpretability by contextualizing the analytics with the context features in the data model. This ability to interpret and explore the analytics, enables the development of an interactive exploratory learning analytics framework to involve the domain experts in the process of knowledge discovery. To show this potential of the sequence model, we developed a dashboard prototype and evaluated the prototype during focus group with our college faculty, advisors, and leadership. As a result, the dashboard facilitates generating new hypotheses about student data, and enables the discovery of actionable knowledge for domain experts.</p><p>

The Influence of Teachers' Technology Attitude and Aptitude on Students' Performance on Computerized Assessments

<p> The purpose of this grounded theory study is to identify teacher factors that affect student performance on computerized exams such as teacher beliefs, professional development, and school resources. Additionally, the researcher seeks to identify student factors that can have an impact on student performance such as student demographics and the socioeconomic status of students. </p><p> To analyze and describe any differences in teacher beliefs between two schools, the researcher compared teacher training, administrative support, and teacher comfort with technology as it related to the technology acceptance model (TAM). The question that the researcher hopes to answer, which is a guiding question for this research is: </p><p> What factors influence student preparedness for computerized assessments? </p><p> The researcher attempts to answer this question by conducting surveys and interviewing teachers. The researcher codes and then analyzes the quantitative data using IBM&rsquo;s Statistical Package for Research Software Program (SPSS) and codes the qualitative data using NVivo, a data analysis tool, to determine common themes about beliefs about technology. Major sections covered in this document include an introduction, review of the literature, methodology, results, and discussion. </p><p>

Pedagogy and related criteria| The selection of software for computer assisted language learning

<p> Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is an established field of academic inquiry with distinct applications for second language teaching and learning. Many CALL professionals direct language labs or language resource centers (LRCs) in which CALL software applications and generic software applications support language learning programs and individual study. The central research question of this study is: What aspects define the lived experience of CALL professionals as they select CALL solutions for language resource centers or language labs? A subset of related research questions focuses on how CALL professionals consider pedagogical aspects of CALL solutions in making selections, the other aspects that CALL professionals consider in adoption or non-adoption decisions, and how CALL professionals experience satisfaction with the solutions available to them, taking into account these pedagogical and other aspects. This study explores the selection of applications from a phenomenological approach based upon Moustakas's modification of Van Kaam's method. Twenty-five language lab and language resource center directors, members of the International Association for Language Learning Technology (IALLT), were interviewed to ascertain aspects of their lived experience in the selection and use of CALL applications in their educational institutions. Areas of inquiry included the alignment of instructional technologies used for language learning to pedagogical and andragogical approaches; the importance of other factors such as cost, technical support, and provider reputation; and the extent of user satisfaction with each of these elements. The majority of the interviewees indicated that pedagogical alignment between CALL solutions and the pedagogical orientation of the programs they support is a critical factor in their decision-making process. Cost is a factor in the majority of cases, while provider reputation and technical support vary as criteria for adoption. Interviewees also identified varying levels of satisfaction with the CALL solutions available with regard to these factors. Is information technology education betters learned in teams? An exploratory study of teamwork effectiveness at a higher education institution

<p> The purpose of this research was to determine if the effectiveness of technology education can be significantly increased through use of team-based activities including both real-time team encounters and results-driven team assignments. The research addresses this purpose by examining perceptions regarding effectiveness of team-based learning in several degree programs in Information Technology education. Survey data was gathered from adult students about their experience with recent team assignments. All participants were enrolled at a large private non-profile university on the west coast within the School of Engineering, Technology and Media. The Team Work Survey was administered and hosted on the Survey Monkey website and released to about 200 courses in programs for a Bachelor of Science or a Master of Science degree. Over four periods, survey responses were returned for 96 learners enrolled in undergraduate courses and 126 learners enrolled in graduate courses. The researcher was granted permission by DiFonzo (2010) to use a survey instrument adapted and piloted that was based on an earlier Team Performance Survey originated by Peters (1997) who developed, validated and determined its reliability. Several comparisons were made using statistical analysis to determine the interesting patterns relevant to this research. The interpretation of findings included evidence that team effectiveness was indeed positively aligned with team members' perceptions about ability to learn, with their interest in the topic and the motivation of individual members to commit time and energy to the team assignments.</p>

Assessment of Risk Factors and Mitigation Recommendations for Adoption of the California Community Colleges Online Education Initiative

<p> The purpose of this study was to identify and prioritize a list of implementation risk factors and suggested mitigation measures for the development team of the California Community Colleges (CCC) Online Education Initiative (OEI) to improve the probability of successful implementation. This study led to the development of an authoritative and comprehensive prioritized list of risk factors and user-recommended mitigation strategies for the risks of a large-scale shared learning management system (LMS) implementation. The data collected and the conclusions derived from surveying college administrators and faculty are intended to augment the literature as well as advance the understanding of how to successfully implement a new shared LMS of this scale successfully. The participants in the policy Delphi study were 10 administrators, 10 full-time faculty members, and 7 adjunct faculty members from the cohort of the first colleges accepted to adopt the OEI. Two rounds of questionnaires were administered using the online electronic survey program SurveyMonkey. The first round asked participants to prioritize software implementation risk factors and make mitigation suggestions for the highest priority risks. The second round asked participants to rank the mitigation suggestions for the top 10 risks identified in the first round. Only 2 of the top 10 risk factors were statistically significant: underfunding of maintenance and support, and lack of faculty and staff responsibility, ownership, and buy-in for the project. There were no statistically significant differences in risk factor assessments based on job type, length of time in job, legacy LMS, legacy LMS experience, or size of college. OEI leadership and colleges should evaluate and implement the top mitigation suggestions for at least the first 2 risk factors and preferably all of the top 10. Engaging the early adopters in assessing potential implementation risks, prioritizing them, brainstorming mitigation measures, and prioritizing those measures yielded an actionable list the team can use to reduce implementation risks and improve the probability of success of the new OEI system.</p>

Teaching math with technology| A study of teachers' attitudes and beliefs

<p> Today's economy is driven by information technology (IT). Education and business should come to an agreement that functional technology skills should be integrated with core academic courses to create an educational system that truly prepares workers for the 21st Century. The business realm theoretical foundation for this study laid on the match/mismatch established between technology&mdash;math education and business' readiness&mdash;[math] skills. The level of education and skills of workers needed by business and industry has increased. Nonetheless, scholars underlined the belief that the skills workers possess are generally not sufficient for the demands of the more sophisticated jobs in today's economy. With this study this researcher pretended to fill the gap in the literature by examining the hypothesis that poor education results in low skills is hampering U.S. businesses and the disparity between what employers need and what workers offer is getting serious enough. Within this investigation the researcher tested for first time three theories: the AST/TML theory, the TAM theory, and the Constructivist theory, whereas having behind scenes K-12's mathematics arena. This study found that "there is no statistically significant relationship between the degree to which teachers accept new technologies and technology usage in mathematics instruction" and that "teachers' individual affective reactions to technology toward integrating computers and technology into math instruction are not related to readiness skills." However, a Post Hoc analysis demonstrated that at least for one of the individual predictors, problem solving construct scores, the null hypothesis was rejected. It means in a long path to academic success, small waves of effectiveness in education are penetrating the sandy beaches of skills. Additionally, this researcher confirmed some scholars' assertion about Confirmatory Factor Analysis, which described that sample sizes smaller than 100 as dangerous and recommended using sample sizes larger than 200 for safe conclusions. Finally, the researcher tested and validated the Technology-Mediated Learning (TML) theory while adding his research positive conclusion(s) to the body of knowledge.</p>

Learning Without Onboarding| How Assessing and Evaluating Learning Benefits New Information Technology Hires

<p> Onboarding ensures learning success through sharing and acquiring knowledge to remain competitive. However, little is known about new Information Technology (IT) hires' learning needs in the absence of onboarding; therefore, the purpose of this case study was to examine, increase, and retain their technical knowledge at the Unified Communications Company (UCC). Following the theoretical model of knowledge management, which holds that knowledge is the key to confirm learning and knowledge sharing, the research questions were used to examine how the company assessed and increased their technical knowledge and how they taught their culture in the absence of onboarding. A qualitative instrumental case study design was employed with a purposeful sample of 4 former employees who were former new IT hires at the UCC. These employees contributed to the study using journals, surveys, and interviews drawn from their experiences as new IT hires at the UCC. Reoccurring themes regarding formal learning were extracted from the data, validated through peer and member checking, and then triangulated with each round of data collection and the themes described in the literature. The themes of culture, onboarding, training, and experience/feedback consistently emerged as areas needing improvement and indicated a need for formalized training. Based on these findings, a job aid was created to provide enhanced performance and learning to offer knowledge throughout training. Companies employing new IT hires can use the results from this study to provide onboarding in addition to their current orientation. The use of these data would positively affect social change by enhancing company competitiveness and job retention while reducing overall unemployment and the skills gap. </p>
