Predicting aircraft equipment removals during initial provisioning periodFincke, Edwin August 09 1900 (has links)
An investigation was made into the characteristics of program elements and removals of Weapon Replaceable Assemblies aggregated at the system level for the purpose of developing a method to predict removals during initial provisioning periods. From examination of nine avionic systems over a 28 month period a binomial model was developed using a removal rate based on aircraft-months as a program element. The model is to be used before Fleet data are generated by obtaining aircraft-month estimates from the contractor and removal rate estimates from similar operational equipments. A probability distribution reflecting the degree of certainty is selected as a prior estimate. Then, as Fleet experience is accumulated the distribution is updated using Bayesian techniques and maturity growth curves. This distribution is used to give an estimate of current removal rate and to extrapolate to future removal rates.

Effect of Initial Conditions on the Compound Shear- and Buoyancy-driven MixingPlacette, Beth 2012 August 1900 (has links)
The effect of initial conditions in combined shear- and buoyancy- driven mixing was investigated through the use of an implicit large eddy simulation code under active development at Los Alamos National Laboratory and Texas A&M University. Alterations were done over several months both at Los Alamos National Laboratory and at the Texas A&M University campus, and include a transition from tilted rig to convective channel arrangement, introduction of an inertial reference frame, alteration of boundary conditions, etc. This work resulted in the development of a numerical framework with the capability to model various shear and Atwood number arrangements such as those seen in an inertial confinement fusion environment.
In order to validate the code, it was compared to three published experiments, one with Atwood number 0.46 (White et al. 2010), one with high Atwood number 0.6 (Banerjee et al. 2010), and one with very low Atwood number 0.032 (Akula et al. 2012).
Upon validating the code, pure Rayleigh-Taylor and pure Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities were modeled along with five intermediate cases of increasing shear and constant density gradient. Plots of mixing width, Richardson number, growth parameter, and molecular mixing were compared in order to determine at what level of shear the minimum amount of mixing occurs. The results of height gradient and Reynolds number were to previous experiments and theory.
The least amount of molecular mixing at the centerline was found to be when the system had a low Atwood number (0.032) and a multimode initial interface perturbation. While the increase in modes of the interface perturbation did not result in a significant change in the growth parameter, the level of molecular mixing at the centerline substantially decreased. As shear was increased in the system, the mixing width and molecular mixing subsequently increased. For this reason, the shear in the system should be eliminated, or at least minimized, if at possible so as to prevent any additional amalgamation in the system. Analysis of the Reynolds number revealed that with an increase in velocity difference between the fluid layers, the value consequently increased. This trend matches with theoretical results as the value is a function of the mixing width and velocity, thus further validating the code. Analysis of the transitional Richardson number revealed that it had a smaller value in the computational case over the experiment, but this fact can be attributed the difference in mixing width between the two methods. The development of the numerical framework with the capability to model various shear and Atwood number arrangements offers the platform for future study of hydrodynamic instabilities.

The Initial training of teachers presents itself as one of the main sources of analysis research and understanding of professional development. Considering the importance of teaching for society, this study emphasizes the role of the Programa Institucional de Bolsa de Iniciação à Docência – PIBID, which has been presented as an action that aims to encourage this formation, seeking appreciation and recognition of teaching, as well as the improvement of educational quality. In order to do so, it aimed to identify and analyze thesis and dissertations about the performance of PIBID /Unesp in the initial teacher training, being this a qualitative study from bibliographical and documentary nature. Six scientific productions were analyzed. The analysis of the data is presented through two categories: 1) PIBID/Unesp: campus of action, subprojects and participants presenting the performance of PIBID/Unesp in 15 campuses, through 13 subprojects, counting on 917 scholarship holders, 163 supervisors, 78 are coordinators, 4 management coordinators and one institutional coordinator, pointing out the largest number of scholarship holders in the courses of Pedagogy and Mathematics; 2) Identification and Analysis of Productions presenting the data through two categories. The first one indicates that the productions have investigated the theme in the courses of Mathematics, Pedagogy and Chemistry, through several theoretical references, all of them are from qualitative approach. The productions had as main instruments of data collection the interview, documentary analysis and observation. The largest number of participants in these studies was scholarship holders, whose main results were the reflections and experiences provided by the educational environment, the development of collaborative actions and the exchange of experiences. In addition, it has shown that the establishment of the practice by the PIBID/Unesp in the initial training of teachers has been fundamental for learning of the teaching profession. The second category emphasizes that the encouragment to teaching established by the program has been linked to factors such as financial remuneration, professional orientation, conception about teaching, improvement of training, contributions to basic education and teacher appreciation. In conclusion, the results showed that the PIBID/Unesp has acted in a favorable away in the initial training of teachers, and their contributions are constituted in the pedagogical scope by establishing to the formative graduates context linked to their future profession through the training of practice, and, politically, for the actions that lead to the encourage of teaching.

On the mass and luminosity within isolated and binary galaxiesBlackman, Clinton Paul January 1977 (has links)
The aim of this project has been to study the detailed mass and luminosity distributions within spiral galaxies, with particular emphasis on the comparison of isolated and binary systems. A large programme of photographic U, B, Y and E surface photometry has been completed using the St. Andrews 1m Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, and a series of computer programmes have been written to evaluate the detailed luminosity distribution of galaxies, using data from a computer -controlled, plate-scanning. Spectroscopic observations of a number of binary galaxy systems have also been made, using the Isaac Newton Telescope and the 195cm telescope at mute Provence, and well-defined rotation curves have been obtained for the galaxies in three systems. The photometry of these galaxies and of ten isolated galaxies with known rotation curves has revealed an extra outer component in the integrated luminosity distributions which has not been widely noted before. For these galaxies, the variation in mass to luminosity ratio (M/L) has been studied at large radii by extrapolating the observed rotation curves, using an empirical formula. This has revealed a general tendency for M/L to decrease with increasing radius. For most galaxies, a small, but well-defined outer peak is also seen, coinciding with the boundary of the outer component in the luminosity distribution. It is postulated that the outer component corresponds to those parts of the galaxies lying outside the outer Lindblad resonance, and this has been confirmed comparing the spiral pattern obtained from density wave theory with the 034ervod structure of the galaxies. This implies that the rotation curves are not at large radii, as they would be if a massive halo were present. This is by the fact that the luminosities of the outer components are too large for much a nalo, according to recent estimates of halo properties. In their gross properties, the binary galaxies do not differ from the isolated Two of the galaxies are, however, very luminous for their mass, and this is explained qualitatively by the tidal forces due to the neighbouring galaxy, with increase the strength of the shocks associated with the spiral arms, extrapolating to the density wave model, in turn giving rise to enhanced star formation.
