The influence of ants on the insect fauna of broad-leaved, savanna trees

The influence of foraging ants on the insect fauna within the canopy of the tree species Terminalia sericea, Burkea africana and Ochna pulchra was studied in an area of typical South African savanna, over a two year period. The number of individual insects and their species composition was compared on unbanded, ant-infested plants and on banded plants where ants had been excluded. Differences in the level of herbivory recorded on banded and unbanded trees were related to the guild composition of insects within the canopy, and the results are discussed in terms of plant protection as a consequence of ant - insect interactions. Twenty-six ant species were recorded on the study trees at Nylsvley, with individuals belonging to the genus Crematogaster being numerically abundant and dominant within the canopy of each species of tree. These dominant ant species influenced the insect fauna by their strong dependence on honeydew, encouraging a build up in numbers of Homoptera on the branches and leaves of foraged trees, and supporting homopterous populations within the confines of their nest compartments . The exclusion of ants from trees led to fewer "mobile" homopterans (Aphididae, Membracidae, Psyllidae and Cicadellidae) and "sessile" homopterans (mainly Coccidae but also Pseudococcidae). Pyrethrum spraying showed that the guild composition of non-homopterous insects was similar on banded and unbanded trees. Differences in the level of herbivory on banded and unbanded trees suggested that, although slight, foraged trees were protected from some damage by the presence of ant species within the canopy. A trend did exist towards a greater number of insect individuals and species on unbanded trees, and it is postulated that during the period 1982 1984 when drought conditions prevailed over Nylsvley, ants do not reduce insect numbers through predation or disturbance but simply deter phyllophagous feeding. A separate experiment showed that Crematogaster constructor would feed on the eggs and early instar larvae of the saturnid moth, Cirina forda, but low numbers of lepidopterous larvae on the trees may have forced ants to seek honeydew. The negative impact of large homopterous populations on foraged trees was only seen in an isolated field observation where Polyrachis schistacea was found to associate with the lac insect Tachardina sp . . In conclusion it can be said that where homopterans are not the dominant phyllophages, plants do benefit from foraging populations of ants in that damage to the leaves is reduced.

Petri dish and olfactometer tests demonstrated that Goniozus natalensis (Gordh) females exhibit a host-searching response upon contact and at a short distance by olfaction, to a kairomone in the frass of its natural host Eldana saccharina (Walker). The host-searching response was found to be elicited by E. saccharina frass from a range of substrates, namely: two host plants of E. saccharina, papyrus and sugarcane, and four media: sugarcane, papyrus, and cellulose based media and a synthetic medium containing no plant material. The host-searching response was not elicited by Sesamia calamistis (Hamps) sugarcane medium frass. The sexual state and age of G. natalensis females were found to influence the host-searching behaviour. Mated females showed the behaviour in the petri dish bioassays only after completing their preoviposition time of two to three days, whilst virgin females took longer, even though their preoviposition time was found to be the same. The response to male or female produced E. saccharina sugarcane frass was not statistically different, nor was there a statistically significant preference for either frass type, given the choice. Four way olfactometer tests showed that an E. saccharina sugarcane frass odour elicited a host-searching behaviour in mated two to three day old G. natalensis females. Various solvents were tested for their ability to isolate the kairomone from E. saccharina sugarcane frass. Chloroform proved to be the best solvent when tested in petri dish and olfactometer bioassays. The preliminary results of the GC/MS analysis of the chloroform extract of E. saccharina sugarcane frass are presented. The chemicals identified are compared with chemicals identified as host location kairomones for other insect parasitoid-host studies. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of Natal, 1990.

The host-searching behaviour of coccophagus atratus compere (Aphalinidae: hymenoptera)

The host-searching behaviour of the parasitoid Coccophagus atratus Compere was investigated. C. atratus parasitoids have unusual host relationships. Female offspring develop in scale insects but male offspring develop hyperparasitically on their conspecific females, or on other parasitoid species. C. atratus females, therefore, must locate, identify and oviposit into two different types of hosts. A primary aim of this thesis, was to identify when and how the behaviour of a female, searching for hosts suitable for female offspring, differed from that of a female searching for hosts suitable for male offspring. This was done by investigating and comparing the behaviour of virgin and mated females. Virgin females can lay only male eggs while mated females can lay both male and female eggs. The role of plant odours and host odours in attracting C. atratus females to the host habitat and to their scale insect hosts was examined with the aid of an olfactometer. Field observations, to test the validity of results obtained in laboratory experiments, indicated that C. atratus females do not search initially for for their hosts' food plants, but search directly for hosts. Only when hosts were physically located did the behaviour of virgin and mated females differ. Recognition cues used by the females to distinguish between the two types of hosts were identified. Finally, the implications of results obtained were discussed in relation to ecological and evolutionary aspects of heteronomous parasitoid biology.

Ecological correlates : endophagous insects and plants in fynbos.

The objective of this study was to investigate endophagous insect species richness in Fynbos. The influences of plants as determinants of insect occurrence were given special attention. The endophagous insects associated with Proteaceae in Fynbos were compared to endophage assemblages from northern, non-Capensis Proteaceae. The Cape Fynbos genus Protea is utilized by many more insect taxa than the non-Fynbos species. The high diversity of host plants in Fynbos appears to have contributed to generating high, local endophagous insect diversity. Influences of regional climate, biotope and host-plant characteristics on the frequency of occurrence of insect borers exploiting Protea species was investigated in Fynbos. Distinct differences in frequency of encounter of the various insect taxa were recorded for the various host-plants studied. This variability was primarily accounted for by physical host-plant characteristics (infructescence and seed-set variables). These findings have important implications for evolution of insects associated with these plants, as well as for the conservation of insects and in pest control programmes on indigenous cut flowers. The relative species richness of endophagous and ectophagous insects in Fynbos was compared. Gall-forming insects (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), were found to be considerably more speciose than other feeding guilds, showing that the ratio of endophages to ectophages in sclerophyllous vegetation types is high. The intimate relationship that endophagous insects have with their host plants tends to habitat specialization. These insects are therefore likely to undergo radiation together with their host-plants. Species richness of gall-insects in Fynbos was investigated to establish whether insect richness was proportional to plant species richness. The relationship between gall-insect species richness and plant-species richness was investigated. Fynbos harboured more gall-insect species than other Cape Floristic Region vegetation types. Gall-insect species richness was positively correlated with plant-species richness. Plant species richness appears to have contributed to the evolution of a rich gall-insect fauna in the region. Fynbos gall-insect species richness is comparable to other sclerophyllous vegetation types globally, underscoring the importance of this vegetation type as a centre of galler diversification. Finally, the importance of plant species richness as a determinant of gall-insect species richness was investigated by comparing different sclerophyllous vegetation types under the same climatic conditions. Gall were sampled from Fynbos and Karoo vegetation. Fynbos had higher gall-insect species richness, correlated with plant-species richness. This thesis investigates the possibility of using aposematic insects as guides to plants that contain pharmacologically-active compounds. Plants were monitored within national parks in the Republic of Panama over a period of six months and all insects feeding on them were collected and raised in captivity. The insects were then extracted and analyzed to determine how they were treating toxic chemical compounds in their host plant. Two principal plants were investigated with their associated insects: (1) Vismia baccifera and (2) Mikania guaco. One generalist and one specialist Lepidopteran species were found to sequester vismione B from their host plant Vismia baccifera, a cytotoxic compound active against three cancer cell lines. Two specialist Coleopterans were found to sequester the novel compound Guacanone, isolated by the primary author from the vine Mikania guaco and active against Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas' disease. A generalist Coleopteran was found to not sequester this compound. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Composition and phenology of insect pests of Capsicum (Solanaceae) cultivated in the Makana District, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

Capsicum baccatum var. pendulum was first grown in the Makana District in 2005. Extremely little was known about best practices for cultivation or the insects and diseases associated with the crop in this area. The study was conducted during the second year of production, November 2005 and November 2006, in an attempt to identify the composition and phenology of insects occurring on C. baccatum. In the more rural parts of the Eastern Cape, and more particularly in Grahamstown, there are very few industries. With the advent of this new agricultural venture, a processing factory has been opened in Grahamstown creating more than 600 seasonal jobs in the factory and 1000 seasonal jobs on farms for local people. This business enterprise has not only brought about the creation of jobs, but also training and skills development and empowerment, generating much-needed income in this area. An extensive literature review yielded limited information on insect pests associated with Capsicum. Data from a pilot sampling trial undertaken were statistically analyzed to establish the number of plants to be scouted per site and the most effective scouting techniques to use. Based on the data available and insects collected during the pilot sampling trial, a surveillance programme was designed. Five different types of monitoring traps were placed in each of the eight study sites. Collection of trap catches and scouting of fifteen individual plants per site was undertaken on a weekly basis over the 52-week study period. The most commonly occurring potential insect pests were African Bollworm Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), False Codling Moth Thaumatotibia leucotreta (= Cryptophlebia leucotreta) (Meyrick), Mediterranean Fruit Fly Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) and several species of thrips. Population densities of these pests and their phenology on Capsicum were determined. Statistical analyses established the efficacy of the monitoring traps for each pest, tested for differences among and between study sites, calculated an estimate of the number of pods damaged and a measure of plant damage.The results show that the majority of damage caused to the Capsicum baccatum cropping system was due to Mediterranean Fruit Fly populations. It was established that, although African Bollworm and False Codling Moth were present during the study period, their numbers were negligible and only nominal damage was caused by these pests. Damage caused by thrips species was apparent but not quantifiable. Intervention strategies using an Integrated Pest Management approach, are discussed.
