On Bounded Variation

Lewis, Paul Weldon 08 1900 (has links)
This paper is primarily concerned with developing the theory of real-valued functions of bounded variation and those ideas which are closely related to this main topic. In addition to this, some emphasis has been placed on the relationship of the theory of functions of bounded variation to specific areas of analysis. In particular, integration theory has been chosen as the vehicle to demonstrate this connection.

The Economic Relationship Between ASEAN and China:A Viewpoint of Integration Theory

yen, chinpen 29 July 2002 (has links)
During the Cold War, the world was dominated by two superpowers. In Eastern Asian, China and ASEAN members all had to choose to be close partners of each opposite group. Along with the rising of Japanese economy, the developing of glorious Asian Four Tigers, the democratizing of countries belonging to the Warsaw Treaty and the collapsing of the former Soviet Union, the world military powers have no longer fought against each other, and the force of economic development, replacing armaments expansion, has spread its area. The successful case of economic integration in Europe has spilled outwards its influence and has offered a pathway of rethinking for ASEAN and China to be integrated thanks to their close location. Owing to the forming of ASEAN on the 8th August 1967, in 1980s the growth rates of ASEAN economics have been maintained at around 8 percent. This successive strong growth for many years was such an outstanding performance, comparing to other economic areas around the world, and it has increasingly made people there rich and that Southeast Asia an area of vigorous economic development. Meanwhile, after the Third National Convention in November 1978, the economic system of China has taken revolutionary changes and opened up the Chinese economy to the outside world. Then, after Deng Xiaoping visited the southern China in 1992, China gave up the arguments whether taking capitalism or maintaining socialism, and therefore its economy has became a huge dragon to be an important focus of ASEAN. Since then, the trade relationship between China and ASEAN has been interacting more frequently than ever before. Although the financial crisis was spread in ASEAN in 1997, currencies of those countries were devalued dramatically and it influenced, therefore, their economic growths extremely. However, during this crisis, China government announced strongly that Renminbi would not devalue for sure, and this currency strategy helped ASEAN escape from the financial crisis quickly. After that period, the Dialogue of Ten plus Three has accelerated the economic integration of China and ASEAN. After the Cold War, economic strength of area is one of the main features of power that help a nation to compete with others around world. In 1990s, due to the close location and rapid economic development of ASEAN and China, the trade, investment and co-operation between two sides have been increasing at a high speed. The purpose of this research is to explore, from the perspective of Neo- function-overflow theory, whether China and ASEAN have had on the way to area integration.

Pathway in measure and integration theories

Meyers, Richard January 1965 (has links)
Thesis (M.A.)--Boston University / PLEASE NOTE: Boston University Libraries did not receive an Authorization To Manage form for this thesis or dissertation. It is therefore not openly accessible, though it may be available by request. If you are the author or principal advisor of this work and would like to request open access for it, please contact us at open-help@bu.edu. Thank you. / The thesis is divided into three parts. Part One, Measure and Measure Spaces, contains the introduction; and in later chapters this part approaches measure theory by the most natural route. It begins in a detailed fashion by developing the theory of set length through several levels of generalization, including the concepts of ordinary interval length, Jordan content, and Lebesgue measure. Then, without details, it discusses the extension of this theory of measure to more complex Euclidean sets and, finally, to abstract sets. Part Two, The Integral on Measure Spaces, introduces the theory of Lebesgue integration. The integrals treated gere are the measure dependent Lebesgue and general Lebesgue integrals. Chapter 6 in this part establishes a link between the Riemann integral and Jordan content, described in Chapter 3 of Part One, and between the Lebesgue integral and Lebesgue measure, described in Chapter 4 of Part One. Chapter 7 establishes an analogous link between the general Lebesgue integral and general measure spaces introduced in Chapter 5 of Part One. Chapter 8 , Measure on a Semialgebra, stands as a bridge between the historic and abstract versions of the Lebesgue Theory; for it generalizes the procedure used to construct the geometric integral, and shows that this procedure will produce general integrals as well. Part Three, A More General Integral , considers the theory of the Daniell integral. This integral is defined in more general terms than the measure-dependent Lebesgue integral of Part Two. Nevertheless, a harmonious resolution is reached in the theorems that show how the lines supporting the two theories can be drawn together / 2031-01-01

The Study of Taiwan¡¦s Economic and Trade Policies to Mainland China in Lee Teng-hui Periods (1988~2000)

Liou, Jing-wei 06 February 2007 (has links)
During Lee Teng-hui¡¦s administration, Lee Teng-hui actually made great influences on Taiwan. After 1988, two sides have entered one changeable pattern, although Taiwan Straits two sides present the estranged state on being interdynamic in every politics of stage. But in the low steps politics , such as the politics of economy and trade, society, culture to demonstrate the atmosphere of the hot twine state. In reviewing a great deal of theories of explaining the trade relationship of two sides, the paper is attempting to analyze the interaction and influence of economic and trade policies of two sides of the Taiwan Straits with western Independence Theory¡BIntegration Theory. However, the paper may involve comparatively sensitive politics in the article. But as we know that it should be unavoidable that a piece of political economy in this country can¡¦t be separated because the political economy is originally an organic whole. As the result of the research, we can find that the two sides during the process of combining split into the interconnected system ' of we and ' alone ' strength, exactly close in politics , has faced alternatives; The degree in non- political fields , such as economy , society , culture , have already moved towards the depth and have been combined. In other words, this paper proposes explaining the situation that how two sides combine with the economy and trade interaction, and it also make systemic arrangement to construct build logical thinking. Finally, we will attempt to find out the formulation of the economic and trade policy in the mainland in the future from the processes and results of studying which playing the part of role and way to make the suggestion and policy in the future!

Experiment on the Information Integration of Risk Perception of Drunk Driving

Kuo, Wen-Chun 27 August 2001 (has links)
Over the past five years, an average of about 323 traffic accidents that were caused by drunk driving occurred in Taiwan every year, resulting in 306 deaths and injuring 297 people and costing Taiwan society a lot. Concerned government agencies have recognized this harsh problem and taken measures as a counteract, for example, imposing heavy fines and punishing the driver with penal code, in order to discourage this poor habit of drunk driving. However, the tragedies caused by drunk driving have not abated. Government agencies usually execute public powers from the subjective perspective of statutory law, and similarly the research and investigation of related problems conducted in Taiwan usually emphasize the enforcement aspect. However, the results of foreign research indicate that risk message can be conveyed through risk communication so as to change the public¡¦s risk perception, resulting in their changes in behavior. This study began with the cognitive perspective of the risk of drunk driving perceived by the law enforcers, voluntary group of drunk driving risk, and pressured group of drunk driving risk, and used the experimental method of Information Integration Theory to investigate the integrated algebra model of each concerned group¡¦s ¡§probability information¡¨ and ¡§outcome information¡¨ of drunk driving risk and its level of risk perception. The findings are as follows: I. Cognitive algebra model (I) On drunk driving cases with high-probability, low-outcome risk of being stopped, the law enforcers as a whole used the multiplying model, while the drunk driving group and the ordinary driving group used the equal-weight averaging model to integrate the information. (II) On drunk driving cases with low-probability, high-outcome risk of causing traffic accidents, the law enforcers, the drunk driving group, and the ordinary group all used the adding model, with more emphasis on the outcome information. (III) On drunk driving cases with high-probability, low-outcome risk of being stopped, most people used the equal-weight averaging model, and they used the adding model on the cases of low-probability, high-outcome risk of causing traffic accidents. II. Risk perception (I) The drunk driving group had the highest risk perception on the type of high-probability, low-outcome risk of being stopped drunk driving, the ordinary group had the second highest risk perception, and the law enforcers had the lowest risk perception. (II) The ordinary group had the highest risk perception on the type of low-probability, high-outcome risk of drunk driving causing traffic accidents, the drunk driving group had the second highest risk perception, and the law enforcers had the lowest risk perception.

Comprehension and learning through multimedia : integrative processing of text and illustrations / Integrative processing of text and illustrations

Roy, Marguerite Claire. January 2000 (has links)
The comprehension of illustrations and text was studied from a cognitive discourse processing perspective. Typically, learners must construct conceptual knowledge representations that integrate different types of information from diverse sources and modalities (e.g., text and illustrations). Currently, little is known about how such integrative processing works in "multimedia" learning situations. This study focused on the semantic representations that low prior knowledge learners constructed as they read from text and static illustrations presenting multiple types of information (structural, functional, and energy) describing a functional system. Both the text and the illustrations were modified so that structural information would be highlighted over other information types. / Participants were twenty-four undergraduate engineering students who had little prior knowledge of the target domain (the human visual system), but were experienced in learning about functional systems using texts and illustrations. Six students were randomly assigned to each of four presentation conditions: (a) text only, (b) illustrations only, (c) text with controlled access to illustrations, or (d) text with free access to illustrations. / The materials were presented individually in a computer environment which recorded and timed all information accessed. Participants provided on-line interpretations as they read, post-input verbal and visual free recalls of the materials, and responses to integrative comprehension questions. Planned comparisons were used to contrast: (a) the two text with illustrations groups, (b) the combined text with illustrations groups to the text only group, (c) the text with illustrations groups to the illustrations only group, and (d) the processing of information which was privileged (structure) to other information. / The results indicated that the text and illustrations each provided mutually constraining information that functioned together to support comprehension. Illustrations aided the construction and elaboration of mental models by providing an external context that supported more active conceptual processing and integration of information. Text aided both literal and high level comprehension by communicating the meaning of illustrations and signaling what information was important. These results support perspectives on situated learning which emphasize the role that discourse plays in comprehending knowledge in environments involving more than one external information source. Future research is recommended to extend such findings to other populations of learners and materials.
