__________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The present work is a research paper on the Brazilian Sociology in the 1950s. Its process of analysis follows the trajectory of Florestan Fernandes, scholar, pioneer, owner of a vast academic contribution through his countless works, and a significant contributor in institutionalizing the University of São Paulo. The general goal of this research paper is to analyze his thoughts and reflections on the origin of academic Sociology in Brazil, confronting them with publications of that time period. Florestan is the precursor of a style of narrative which praises the achievements of ‘university’ Sociology and, at the same time, relegates the essaystic writing traditions and social research conducted in other states to a lower position of importance and validity. Such style of narrative, evident in his writings of 1958, 1976 and 1978, inspired and lived on in the works of Carlos Guilherme Mota (1998) and Sérgio Miceli (2001) on one same topic which is here defined as “uspian self-image”. As to the more specific goals of this research, the present investigation seeks to reconstruct some scenarios and episodes which have been important to Sociology in Brazil. In describing the debates which have presided the organization of the UNESCO Project on racial issues in Brazil, between 1952 and 1959, and the lectures delivered in the 1st Seminar of the Brazilian Sociology Community, in São Paulo, 1954, this study gathers evidence on several points through which the academic Sociology establishes a dialogue with the essaystic studies, and on the production of high-standard sociological research in states where modernization was then taking slow and small steps towards its development. Structured in such manner, the present work casts doubt on the conventional images of the rupture between the knowledge traditions mentioned above and the ‘paulista’ exclusiveness in the formation period of “scientific” sociology in the country.
