Thesis (MEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South Africa holds the second largest share of the world’s titanium mineral deposits. However, there is no capacity for the development of titanium metal, mill products or components. It is at these stages of development that most of the value is added. For this reason, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) has been undertaking a research-led industrialisation initiative. The aim of this initiative is to establish a titanium industry strategy within South Africa. This research comes at a time when the demand for titanium, particularly from the commercial aerospace and biomedical sectors is growing rapidly.
A South African industrial strategy framework has been developed by the DST to deliver titanium related competencies across the entire titanium value chain. One of the key building blocks within the strategy framework is targeted at the machining of titanium metal. This is a core competence required for the manufacture of finished titanium products. This research is fully aligned with the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Strategy (AMTS) and its objective of improving industry competitiveness via the development of advanced manufacturing technologies, as well as to the objectives of the Titanium Centre of Competence (TiCoC), whose mission is to develop and commercialise the technology building blocks required for the establishment of a titanium industry in South Africa.
In order to implement the titanium industry strategy successfully in South Africa, all research being conducted in this field needs to be transferred to industry as well as protected. This is the focus of this thesis and is achieved through the development of technology transfer (TT) strategy as well as an intellectual property (IP) strategy for titanium machining. Without a TT strategy, the technological developments which are made might not be successfully implemented into industry as intended. An IP strategy is equally as important as, without one, entire research and development projects can be lost to those seeking to take advantage of incorrectly protected IP.
To develop the TT and IP strategies, substantial information on the basics of these fields was considered. Titanium machining relevant information, such as contract details, industrial partnerships as well as the level of development which the research had achieved upon starting this study was also considered. Together this information created a solid foundation for decision making with regards to how both IP and TT should be handled for the titanium machining research initiative. Each new technology developed, along with its respective IP needs to be considered individually, as the scenarios for both its protection and transfer into industry will be in some way unique. As such, the strategies developed within this report attempt to provide a general outline for the decision making process for any situation which might arise.
Ultimately both strategies are represented within this thesis. In order to take the research presented in this thesis further, the development of an IP portfolio is suggested allowing for decisions to be made with regards to technology specific IP outputs. For the technology transfer further implementation of tests for validation purposes at the industrial partners is recommended, in order to begin to develop an understanding of their environments and capabilities. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Suid-Afrika beskik oor die wereld se tweede grootste titaaan mineraalafsetting, maar daar is geen kapasiteit vir die ontwikkeling van titaan metaal, milj produkte of komponente nie. Dit is op hierdie stadium van ontwikkeling waar die meeste waarde toegevoeg word. Om hierdie rede is die Departement van Wetenskap en Tegnologie (DWT) besig met ‘n navorsingsgedrewe industrialisering inisiatief. Die doel van hierdie inisiatief is om 'n titaan bedryfstrategie in Suid-Afrika te vestig. Hierdie navorsing vind plaas op ‘n tydstip waar die vraag na titaan, veral vanuit die kommersiële ruimte- en biomediese sektore, vinnig groei.
'n Suid-Afrikaanse industriële strategie raamwerk is ontwikkel deur die DWT om titaan verwante vaardighede te lewer oor die hele titaan waardeketting. Een van die belangrikste boustene binne die strategiese raamwerk is gemik op die bewerking van titaan metaal. Dit is die kernbevoegdheid wat benodig word vir die vervaardiging van voltooide titaan produkte. Hierdie navorsing is ten volle belyn met die “Advanced Manufacturing Technology Strategy” (AMTS) en sy doelwit van verbetering van die bedryfsmededingendheid via die ontwikkeling van gevorderde vervaardigingstegnologie, asook die doelwitte van die “Titanium Centre of Comptetence” (TiCoC), wie se missie dit is om die tegnologiese boustene wat nodig is vir die vestiging van 'n titaan bedryf in Suid-Afrika te ontwikkel en te komersialiseer.
Ten einde die titaan bedryf strategie suksesvol in Suid-Afrika te implementeer, moet alle navorsing in hierdie veld beskerm word en daarna na die bedryf oorgeplaas word. Dit is dan die fokus van hierdie tesis, wat bereik word deur die ontwikkeling van ‘n IP strategie asook ‘n tegnologie oordragstrategie vir titaan masjinering. Sonder die nodige intellektuele eiendom (IP) beskermingstrategie, kan hele navorsing- en ontwikkeling projekte verloor word deur diegene wat voordeel wil trek uit IP wat nie korrek beskerm is nie. ‘n Tegnologie oordragstrategie is ewe belangrik aangesien, in die afwesigheid hiervan, die ontwikkelings wat gemaak word, dalk nie suksesvol geïmplementeer sal word in industrie soos bedoel nie.
Om die IP strategie te ontwikkel, is omvattende inligting oor die basiese beginsels van IP beskerming en bestuur oorweeg. Tersaaklike inligting oor titaan verwerking soos, kontrak besonderhede, industriele venootskappe asook die vlak van ontwikkeling wat die navorsing alreeds bereik het met die aanvang van hierdie studie, is in ag geneem. Saam het hierdie inligting ‘n stewige fondament geskep vir besluitneming ten opsigte van die toepassing en die hantering van beide IP asook die oordrag van tegnologie in die titaanverwerking navorsings inisiatief. Elke nuwe tegnologie wat ontwikkel word, tesame met die betrokke IP benodighede, moet individueel oorweeg word, aangesien die scenario vir beide die IP beskerming en oordrag van die tegnologie na industrie unieke aspekte sal hê. As sodanig poog die strategie wat ontwikkel is binne hierdie verslag, 'n algemene raamwerk te bied vir die besluitnemingsproses vir enige situasie wat mag ontstaan.
Beide strategieë is in hierdie tesis aangespreek. Die rigting vir toekomstige werk dui daarop dat ‘n IP portfolio saamgestel moet word wat voorsiening maak vir tegnologies-spesefieke besluite ten opsigte van IP uitsette. Ten opsigte van tegnologie oordrag, word verder aanbeveel dat toetse vir die validasie by venote in industrie ingestel word, ten einde begrip te ontwikkel vir hulle omgewings en vermoëns.

This thesis explores the international dimensions of Rosario Castellanos’ writings, which exhibit a constant—and evolving—preoccupation with feminist literature from across the world. The Mexican woman, public intellectual, professor, author, and ambassador dialogued with Simone de Beauvoir, Simone Weil, Betty Friedan, Emily Dickinson, Virginia Woolf, Gabriela Mistral, and Clarice Lispector, among others, while relating their ideas to Mexican women’s lives. Her journalistic production, essays, poetry, and narrative undergo an evolution as Castellanos articulates a unique Mexican feminist project that factors in race, class, and other intersections affecting Mexican women.
I access Castellanos—who has been considered the “Simone de Beauvoir of Mexico”—through the lens of global feminism, which considers the varying layers of power and powerlessness when women of disparate regions and cultures seek solidarity. Through a global feminist perspective, we see how Castellanos, rather than blindly importing First World women’s agendas, carefully intervenes in global feminist discouses with what Mexican women need. In her evolution, Castellanos grows closer to a feminist project that, rather than buying into the myth of a global sisterhood, evokes instead a desire for a Latin American sisterhood and for Mexican women’s self-definition.

一九四九年中華人民共和國成立,社會結構發生巨變,知識分子群體的階層身份與話語體系首當其衝受到劇烈衝擊--階層身份的重塑與話語體系的重構,需要盡快完成,以實現與社會主義意識形態的對接,為新政權服務。在這種情境下,高校歐美派自由主義知識分子群體對高校院系調整政策的集體抵制,觸發了建國以來中國共產黨對知識分子的第一場大規模思想改造運動。在這場以「洗澡」命名的改造運動中,毛澤東建構的「新」話語通过「批評與自我批評」的運動方式灌輸给被改造者,最終實現了對高校知識分子精英「舊」話語的全面替代。本文採取政治傳播學與話語研究相結合的研究視角,將這場發生於1951-1952年的中國知識分子思想改造運動嵌入時代发展的政治文化坐標,通過對中國傳統知識分子、五四知識分子話語體系的系譜梳理、展現毛澤東建構下的「新-舊」知識話語間的話語創新、重合與對抗,並通過改造運動中這套「新」話語之於知識分子群體思想与話語的改造,展示出建國初期毛治下知識分子思想改造運動中的話語傳播手段與權力運用策略。本文認為,毛澤東通過「破舊」與「立新」兩大步驟,以「階級論」為核心、聯合「人民」與「革命」兩大強勢話語,對「知識」及「知識分子」重下定義,創造出一套「新」的「紅色」知識話語體系,成為毛治下整體性的、無所不包的意識形態解釋體系。具體到知識分子改造實踐中,該話語運用「階級」的概念將知識分子與底層民眾的權力地位反轉,並通過將「階級」與中國傳統文化中的道德相關聯,激發知識分子的「原罪感」,加之群眾運動中不斷激化的「污名化」、暴力語言和對毛「先知」話語的崇拜等話語現象,致使高校知識分子群體紛紛與過去的知識話語體系決裂。然而,毛建構的「紅色」話語體系,是建立在脫離社會實際的「表達性現實」基礎上的,儘管隨著毛澤東這一話語權威核心的消失,整套話語體系也隨之崩塌,但運動對於知識分子群體話語、思想與精神的衝擊,成為當時崇尚「獨立之思考、自由之精神」的知識分子精英群體所共同面臨的話語困境,也是當前中國知識分子依然直面的問題。Abstract When the People's Republic of China (PRC) was founded in 1949, social structure had changed dramatically and the class identity of intellectual groups was the first to be affected severely. The remodeling of class identity and reconstruction of discourse system of the intellectuals needed to be addressed as quickly as possible so as to serve the new regime. And the event that the elite liberal intellectuals in colleges and universities boycotted the adjustment on faculty policies of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) had triggered the first large-scale ideological transforming movement after the foundation of PRC. `New' discourse mode constructed by Mao Tsetung was infused into transformers' minds being transformed in this movement, and finally the `red' revolutionary knowledge discourse had totally replaced the traditional knowledge discourse of intellectuals in colleges and universities. From the research perspectives of political communication and discourse analysis, this thesis places this Ideological Transforming Movement of Chinese Intellectuals during 1951 to 1952 into a political and cultural background of the era; manifests the innovation, overlapping and confrontation between the `new' discourse constructed by Mao Tsetung and the traditional discourse of the Chinese traditional intellectuals and the contemporary intellectuals coming into being from in the May 4th Movement; and analyses the application of `new' discourse in intellectual groups in the ideological transforming movement, reveals the discourse propagation tools and power exertion strategies in the ideological transforming movement in the new China under Mao's dominion. It is considered in this thesis that Mao took the `class' as a core discourse, populism and revolutionary narration as contents, redefined `knowledge' and `intellectual', and thus created a new set of `red' knowledge discourse and ideology system. In the intellectual ideological transforming movement, this new, systematic and coverall explanation system utilized `class' to convert the power status between elite intellectuals and people at the bottom of the society, as well as linked it with morality to stimulate the intellectuals' sense of `original sin'. Meanwhile, with the upgrading `stigmatization' and language violence as well as the idolization of `prophet language' of Mao Tsetung in the mass movement after 1949, the elite intellectuals finally discarded the previous knowledge discourse and embrace the `red' current discourse. However, the discourse system constructed by Mao based on the basis of `expressive reality' which broke away from social reality, therefore, as Mao Tsetung, the authority core of the discourse system, disappeared, the overall discourse system constructed by him also collapsed. Nevertheless, the ideological reforming movement in the 1950s exposed a discourse predicament that intellectual elites who advocated `independent thinking and spirit freedom' were jointly facing, which also persists with the Chinese intellectuals nowadays.

Investigation of the human X-linked autism protein KIDLIA in neuronal development and brain functionGilbert, James Patrick 08 November 2017 (has links)
Previous studies of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have shown abnormalities in brain development, synaptic plasticity, and social and learning behavior. Our previous study has identified the X-linked gene KIAA2022, and its protein product KIDLIA, as the etiological factor in a particular group of patients with intellectual disability and ASD phenotypes. I found that KIDLIA is neuron specific and localized exclusively in the nucleus, indicating a possible role for KIDLIA in neuronal gene regulation. Using rat hippocampal neurons, I found that shRNA-mediated knockdown of KIDLIA resulted in a marked impairment of neurite outgrowth via the disruption of the N-cadherin/δ-catenin/RhoA signaling pathway. Additionally, I showed that loss of KIDLIA expression decreases synapse formation and synaptic transmission. To investigate the role of KIDLIA in vivo, I generated and characterized KIDLIA knockout (KO) mice. KIDLIA KO mice demonstrated significant impairments in social interactions, increased repetitive behaviors and deficits in learning and memory, consistent with symptoms observed in human ASD patients and validate this mouse line as a valuable new model for ASD. The KIDLIA KO mice showed reduced synapse formation and abnormal expression of synaptic components such as the GluA1 subunit of AMPA receptors. To understand the potential role of KIDLIA in gene regulation, I used RNAseq to identify major candidates involved in synapse formation and function and discovered the synapse-enriched Ca2+-mediated protein, neurogranin, as the most down-regulated synaptic transcript. I showed that over-expression of neurogranin can rescue KIDLIA-dependent structural and functional synaptic deficits. This study provides valuable insight into the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying KIDLIA-dependent autism and intellectual disability phenotypes. / 2018-11-08T00:00:00Z

The Life Cycle Management and Intellectual Capital factors that influence sustainability integration in organisational processesMastoris, Ioannis January 2017 (has links)
Following the suggestions of the UNEP/SETAC Life Cycle Initiative publications on Life Cycle Management (LCM) as a business management approach to improve sustainability performance, this research explored LCM as a promising research area that could help identify the factors that influence the integration of sustainability aspects into organisational processes. The initial research strategy was comprised of LCM literature analysis to explore LCM and identify potential factors that could direct the data collection. The analysis of the LCM literature shows that LCM is vaguely described. This research analysis puts into context the various LCM approaches through the introduction of the four LCM elements. The LCM elements were used as a frame to analyse the LCM cases found in the literature and identify the factors that influence integration of sustainability in organisational processes. The next stage of the research strategy was to conduct action research studies to explore in close proximity the integration of sustainability aspects in organisational processes. Two in depth action research studies were conducted, influenced by engaged scholarship. During Case A, the LCM elements were used in practice to influence the project whilst the LCM factors were observed in practice. Case A demonstrated the complexity of sustainability-related information integration in organisational processes and the division of information flows towards different organisational functions to inform their own decision. The analysis highlighted that developing knowledge is a key LCM factor that influences the application of LCM. As the importance of developing knowledge became apparent, a novel sustainability related intellectual capital (SrIC) framework was developed then used during Case B. This framework is shown to assist the sustainability professionals of Company B in enhancing the sustainability related intellectual capital of the company, which in turn led to more effective sustainability integration. This research used LCM as a ‘vehicle’ to explore the integration of sustainability aspects into organisational processes and hence contribute to the LCM literature with the four LCM elements framework of analysis, descriptions of the factors that influence the application of LCM, bringing a focus on the importance of developing knowledge for the effective application of LCM, and identifying the intellectual capital factors that influence the integration of sustainability aspects into organisational processes.
