At the ICU, patients, as well as their families and the health team attempt to activate life. However, being at the ICU might cause an emotional breakdown to all people involved. This qualitative research aimed to understand the family members impact after receiving the news informing that their beloved will be inpatient at the ICU. The research was analyzed, through the point of view of the Systemic Theory and also the Attachment Theory. Fifteen families, chosen by convenience, voluntarily took part on this research. A semi structured interview was used in order to understand the following themes: first physical and mental reactions occurred by the ICU confinement notification; cognitive and emotional concept of ICU; the family s daily routine rearrangement due to the ICU confinement; the importance of the support network; the information about the patient s health diagnosis and prognosis offered by the medical team; breaking the link between the family members in the moment of the ICU entrance; the attentive hearing to comfort the family. The results showed that the family members go through a stress condition, they face the uncertainty about the ICU being a place of patients death or recovery. They need subjectively and objectively the network support as well as the patient s health condition, they receive the benefit of the medical team s solidarity posture, and the suffering level from breaking the link depends on the type of family-patient attachment / A unidade de terapia intensiva (UTI) congrega os avanços e a excelência dos recursos tecnológicos e humanos dentro do ambiente hospitalar. Na UTI, pacientes, seus familiares e equipe de saúde almejam habilitação à vida. No entanto, estar na UTI, muitas vezes provoca um desgaste emocional em todos os envolvidos. Esta pesquisa qualitativa teve como objetivo compreender o impacto pelo familiar do paciente, após o comunicado do médico que seu ente seria internado na UTI. A pesquisa foi analisada, com o olhar da Teoria Sistêmica e com a fundamentação da Teoria do Apego. Participaram voluntariamente desta pesquisa, quinze familiares, escolhidos por conveniência. Foi utilizada uma entrevista semiestruturada, que permitiu compreender os seguintes temas: primeiras reações físicas, psíquicas e comportamentais, advindas da notificação de internação em UTI; conceito cognitivo e afetivo de UTI; o rearranjo da rotina diária da família em função da internação em UTI; a importância das redes de apoio; a informação sobre o estado de saúde, diagnósticos e prognósticos do paciente oferecida pela equipe de saúde; o rompimento do vínculo entre paciente e familiares no momento da entrada na UTI; a escuta atenciosa como acolhimento para o familiar. Os resultados mostraram que os familiares passam por uma condição de estresse, deparam-se com a incerteza de UTI como local de morte ou recuperação do paciente. Necessitam subjetiva e objetivamente das redes de apoio e de informação sobre o estado de saúde do paciente, são beneficiados pela postura solidária dos membros da equipe, e que o grau do sofrimento pelo rompimento do vínculo é modulado pelo tipo de apego paciente-familiar
