Encounters with Westerners: Understanding the Chinese Construction of the Western OtherBirks, Ying 26 July 2012 (has links)
In this study we seek to understand how ordinary Chinese people perceive Westerners as the Other through examining their intercultural experiences. In contrast to the numerous studies of social elites’ Occidentalism, this study shifts the attention to ordinary people’s perceptions in a fast changing Chinese society. From an interpretive perspective, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 16 participants living in a coastal city in Mainland China. The key findings suggest that the Chinese public has its own way of perceiving and presenting the Western Other. Also, this Other, being defined in an on-going process of intercultural interaction, connotes a wider meaning – a unity of opposition and complementarity, exclusion and inclusion. Thus this study has deepened our understanding of the Chinese construction of the Western Other. The findings can be used in developing intercultural communication training programs to facilitate deeper contact and better dialogue between the Chinese and Westerners.

Inter-cultural contact and exchange in Ouvea (Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia)Carson, Michael Thomas 12 1900 (has links)
The project comprising this doctoral dissertation investigated long-term patterns of inter-cultural contact and exchange in Ouvea, a Polynesian Outlier in the Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia. To address the research question, an interdisciplinary approach involved ethnohistory, linguistics, and archaeology, with an emphasis on the contribution of archaeology. Ethnohistory offered insight into the contexts of inter-cultural contact and traditional exchange systems in Ouvea and also provided a hypothesis of settlement chronology. Linguistic information proposed a relative sequence of events and processes reflecting contact-induced changes in the Ouvea communities. The archaeological field work for this project concentrated on two rockshelters (Sites LUV029 and LUV030) and an adjacent beach dune (Site LUV028) in Muli Islet of Ouvea. Initial human occupation on a temporary recurrent basis in one of the rockshelters (LUV030) was dated to the first few centuries A.D., followed by permanent habitation and an expansion of occupation to include both rockshelters and agricultural use of the associated beach dune around A.D. 1000. In the subsequent centuries of continuous human occupation, evidence indicated an adaptation to the local physical and cultural environment through intensification in local resources, production of specialized material objects, and an increase in the abundance and diversity of imported exogenous materials. Interpretation of research results from Muli related to internal production and exchange systems in Ouvea as well as to larger spheres of contact and exchange that encompassed the New Caledonia region and even more distant island archipelagos.

Previous issue date: 2018-04-20 / CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The National Policy of Attention to Indigenous Peoples was one of the great achievements of the traditional peoples in the scope of the public policies, acquired rights to a differentiated health attention that would attend to their sociodiversity. One of its guidelines in the area of oral health emphasizes the importance of knowing the epidemiological profile and oral health problems of indigenous groups, stating that in order to better identify the main groups of actions for the promotion, protection and recovery of health. Through this guideline, an epidemiological study was carried out on the prevalence of caries with newly arrived natives living in the Javari Valley, Matis and Korubo, between the years of 2013 and 2016, through the data analysis, it was possible to identify that young people have a higher prevalence of caries and Matis women have a higher prevalence of caries than men and that the prevalence of caries has been increasing over the years. Through these data, it is discussed how the influence of socio-cultural habits and food practices of these peoples affect the health-disease process and how the intercultural contact between the two ethnic groups and the non-Indian directly affect this process. / A Política Nacional de Atenção aos Povos Indígenas foi uma das grandes conquistas dos povos tradicionais no âmbito das políticas públicas, adquiriram direitos a uma atenção em saúde diferenciada que atendesse a sua sociodiversidade. Uma de suas diretrizes, na área de saúde bucal, ressalta a importância de conhecer o perfil epidemiológico e os problemas de saúde bucal dos grupos indígenas, afirmando que, para melhor identificar os principais grupos de ações de promoção, de proteção e de recuperação da saúde. Através desta diretriz, foi realizado um estudo epidemiológico da prevalência de cárie com indígenas de recente contato que habitam o Vale do Javari, Matis e Korubo, entre os anos de 2013 a 2016, através da análise dos dados, foi possível identificar que, os jovens possuem uma maior prevalência de cárie e as mulheres Matis apresentam prevalência de cárie maior que os homens e que a prevalência de cárie vem aumentando com os anos. Através destes dados, é discorrido como a influência dos hábitos socioculturais e as práticas alimentares desses povos afetam o processo saúde-doença e como o contato intercultural entre as duas etnias e o não índio afetam diretamente este processo.

This thesis is a theoretical analysis of the phenomenon of traveling from an ethical point of view. The analysis focuses mainly on the ethical aspects of individual travels of European travelers with regards to cultural contact with different people and also taking into consideration the European tradition of travel. Based on this analysis, an ethical framework is proposed as a tool of interpretation of selected texts that reflect the travel adventures of exceptional Czech travelers, such as A. V. Frič, J. Hanzelka and M. Zikmund, M. Zelený among the Indians of South America. The above mentioned Czech travelers described their travel experiences in the form of ethnographic travelogues and other texts. The aim of this study was, by analysing certain parts of selected ethnographic texts of these Czech travelers - explores, to reveal their individual ethical reflections of the experienced adventures and to interpret it. I have attempted to describe each studied Czech traveler's specific ethical approach to "otherness" in the extreme conditions of their adventures among the Indians of South America. INTERCULTURAL CONTACT, COMPETENCE, AND CONVIVIALITY: A PROPOSAL FOR CAMPUS ENGAGEMENT AND BELONGINGLeighton A Buntain (11741606) 03 December 2022 (has links)
International education
is big business and international students are a large minority on many of the
U.S.’s most reputable institutions. However, a persistent issue has been the
tendency for international and U.S. domestic students to socialize largely
within their own groups of co-nationals. Utilizing a paradigmatic case study
approach on a large public university, this dissertation consists of three
separate, but connected, studies that feature, respectively, (1) staff and
faculty intercultural learning and contact, (2) undergraduate student
experiences of intercultural contact and friendship, and (3) undergraduate
student assessments of campus spaces and programs for interacting across
culture. These studies integrated frameworks from intercultural competence,
intergroup contact theory, and conviviality. Findings throughout the case study
confirmed that friendship and contact between international and domestic U.S.
individuals was limited, even when the participants were motivated, experienced,
and demonstrated many aspects of intercultural competence. Further, the case
was characterized by administrative efforts to address the issue through formal
classes, workshops, and festivals, while generally overlooking the informal
spaces that students found most integral to their own experiences. These
findings underscore a disconnect between trying to “prepare” individuals for
contact rather than attempting to “create” the spaces and programs for such
contact to occur, i.e., a focus on the individual’s knowledge and skills rather
than the interpersonal and environmental conditions in contact. The findings
culminated in the proposed Programmatic Conviviality Model, qualities which are
theorized to support convivial intercultural contact. I argue that this model
and the realignment to a focus on intercultural contact as a goal, is necessary
for college campuses beyond the immediate case study and that this work is
timely as campuses move back to in-person engagement after almost two years of
COVID isolation.
