Organisation & development of anti-predator behaviour in a cooperative breeder

Westrip, James Robert Samuel January 2016 (has links)
In order to reduce their predation risk, species have evolved a range of anti-predator behaviours. One co-ordinated anti-predator behaviour present in some group-living species is sentinel behaviour. In this behaviour individuals take up an elevated position and scan for threats, providing an alarm when one is spotted. However, this behaviour can lead to social conflict. Sentinel behaviour is a public good, i.e. the benefits are felt by all group members, but the costs only accrue to the actor. Thus it may be open to free loading, requiring individuals to monitor collaborators to prevent cheats. Additionally, individuals may vary in their alarm call reliability, which may select individuals to alter their behaviour based on caller ID. Monitoring others requires individuals to be closely associated, yet individuals may be spread out. For instance, foraging groups may be some distance from their nest, yet nestlings are particularly vulnerable. Adults should reduce their number of nest visits if a threat is nearby, so individuals returning from the nest may be selected to communicate about any perceived threats. Additionally, when perceiving threats, species need not use only conspecific information, because heterospecifics can also provide relevant information. In this thesis, I test these ideas in the Southern Pied Babbler (Turdoides bicolor), and I show that a) pied babblers monitor the quantity and quality of group-mates’ anti-predator behaviour; b) babblers accompany naïve sentinels and I investigate whether this may be related to anti-predator teaching; c) babblers do not appear to actively communicate about perceived nest threats because they do not alter their provisioning rate based on heterospecific derived anti-predator information; while d) avian heterospecifics are more prevalent in the presence of pied babblers, and can be attracted to areas by playback of pied babbler calls. These results show that species monitor both conspecifics and heterospecifics, and alter their behaviour based on the information they collect.

Estrutura de comunidades de formigas do cerrado. / Ant community structure in the brazilian tropical dry forest (Cerrado).

Silvestre, Rogerio 09 June 2000 (has links)
The present work investigates three aspects of ant community structure in the tropical dry forest of the Brazilian Central Plateau (Cerrado): interespecific interactions, richness and diversity of species and guilds. Firstly, I investigated the influence of aggressive behaviors in interspecific interactions on ant faunistic surveys that employ baits, assessing if the eventual behavioral dominance hierarchy on the food source influences the relative frequencies observed in surveys. I used as model sardine baits that mimic sources of protein, recording the behavioral acts of ants visiting 60 baits, offered for 90 minutes, on the soil of two Cerrado localities. Seventy-two ant species were registered performing 682 interactive behavioral acts, of which 352 were aggressive, resulting in the death of 29 individuals. Of the observed species, most constantly monitor the habitat searching for food, resulting in niche overlapping, and hence interespecific competition was quite frequent. Most baits (85%) were visited in the first five minutes after exposition, and in average 4,8 (1-8) species visited each bait during the 90 min. The most common behavior registered was the opportunistic visit of ants to baits, in which individuals find the bait alone, take some of it and leave the spot. Nevertheless some species were observed obstructing the access of others visiting the same bait, either by releasing irritating sprays, employing massive recruitment, or by agonistic behaviors. My observations indicate that although dominance may occur resulting in the exclusion of subordinate species, the order in dominance hierarchies may change, possibly as a result of the different distances from the nest to the food source, of the species composition interacting at a given bait, and of the different recruiting strategies employed by them in each situation. Secondly, I check the ant fauna through qualitative and quantitative surveys in seven Cerrado localities. For this purpose the samples include all species collected by different techniques. To perform the quantitative surveys, one area (1ha) of Cerrado sensu stricto was chosen before collecting events in each locality, and 25 points were randomly chosen among 121 points in a grid made by 11 transects, separated 10m either, with 11 points, also separated 10m from each other. At each locality sardine baits were offered for 90 minutes, over the soil and on the vegetation, at day and night periods. A total of 4400 baits in all seven localities were offered in order to compare the ant species composition in each surveyed area. I summed to this total 500 baits set in Forests bordering rivers, on transects covering 250m, in five localities. For the qualitative surveys, a set of general procedures was applied including general collecting using forceps and aspirator, excavations on termites nests, the turn of rocks and opening of rotting wood, tearing up logs and stumps, submitting litter samples to Berlese-Tüllgren funnels and Winkler extractors, the setting of pit-fall traps and yellow water trays, and Malaises and light-traps to capture winged forms. Summing all ants collected in qualitative and quantitative surveys I registered 331 species. In this survey I registered the subfamilies: Formicinae, Myrmicinae, Dolichoderinae, Ecitoninae, Ponerinae, Pseudomyrmecinae, and Cerapachyinae. The genera Camponotus, Pheidole, Crematogaster, and Solenopsis were the most rich in number of species. Pseudomyrmex showed a great diversity (29 species), including undescribed ones. Several species had their first record in this latitude as Blepharidatta conops, Gigantiops destructor, Paraponera clavata, Megalomyrmex acauna, and Tingimyrmex mirabilis. Finally, I analyzed the Cerrado ant community trying to classify the species in guilds based on taxonomy, throphic preference, nidification habits, foraging and recruitment strategies, behavioral patterns observed on interespecific interactions, size of workers, “readiness of movement" and estimated mature colony population. I selected for this analysis those taxa associated with field observation data, considering for this purposes a total of 110 species. A cluster analysis, with Euclidean distance, and with complete linkage oriented the formation of 12 guilds: big predators, patrollers, opportunistic, cryptic, leaf cuttings, fungus growers over carcass, generalist myrmicines, aggressive arboreal, nomads, minimal specialist, cephalotines, and nectars feed dolichoderines. After that I compared two Cerrado localities, utilizing the guild model, revealing as well which species substitute others in different localities, and that the communities are functionally similar.

Martins, Rafael January 2010 (has links)
Tropical rain forests, including the Atlantic Forest, are made up of high diversity and richness which makes them very complex. Elucidating the mechanisms that maintain this diversity is the focus of current ecological approaches. The aim of this study also contributes to a better understanding of the floristic-structural Atlantic Forest, was to assess the relationships between species and the environment from the floristic heterogeneity in responses to environmental gradients. The study was conducted in three forests in southern Santa Catarina, including a remnant lowland peat forest and submontane rain forest and montane rain forest. We sampled tree species, height from 0.20 m. Size classes were established, consisting of (1) individuals equal to or greater than 0.20 m less than 1m, (2) greater than 1 m in less than 5 cm DBH (diameter at breast height), and (3) equal or larger than 5 cm DBH. A canonical correspondence analysis applied to the class 3 showed the segregation of communities from indirect gradients (altitude and topography), causing variation in the availability of resources (direct gradients) locations. The analysis of niche applied to three size classes demonstrated expertise in niches by species, as demonstrated by the average index of marginality (IMO). Relations on the environment and ontogenetic stages showed that the species tend to retain their niche and that conservation is more evident in the environment of the understory, where species tend to coexist with overlapping niches.

Biotic challenges for extremophiles : reproductive interference and parasite specialization in Artemia / Des défis biotiques pour des extrêmophiles : l'interférence reproductive et la spécialisation parasitaire chez Artemia

Lievens, Eva J.P. 12 December 2016 (has links)
The challenges posed by biotic factors – interactions with competitors, parasites, etc. – play a large role in the evolution of populations, but are generally difficult to study. In this work, we used the Artemia system in the hypersaline salterns of Aigues-Mortes, France, to study the character and evolution of several interspecific interactions. The system is eminently suited to such studies: it is simple, containing two Artemia species, three highly prevalent parasites (one helminth and two microsporidians), and various microbiota; and many of its interactions are newly-established, because one of the Artemia species is invasive. We studied two types of interactions. First, the presence and evolution of reproductive interference between the native and invasive Artemia species. We found that the invasive Artemia species, which is sexual, undergoes severe interference in sex allocation when in the presence of the native, asexual Artemia, but no interference in mate guarding. Second, the evolution of parasite specialization in two microsporidian parasites infecting the Artemia species. Using field data, experimental infections, and experimental evolution, we investigated the state, causes, and consequences of specialization in the microsporidians. Results consistently indicated that the microsporidians are specialized for one host species, despite being able to complete their life cycle in either host. This specialization appears to be imposed by the precise toolkits needed to exploit each host species; in the non-specialized hosts, these triggered suboptimal exploitation, maladaptive virulence, and immunopathology. Overall, these studies suggest that the biotic factors acting on Artemia impose strong selection pressures, to which they cannot always respond easily. The importance of biotic factors in a system which is otherwise dominated by extreme abiotic conditions underlines the importance of species interactions in shaping evolution.

A mathematical model of the interactions between pollinators and their effects on pollination of almonds

Yong, Kamuela E. 01 May 2012 (has links)
California's almond industry, valued at $2.3 billion per year, depends on the pollinator services of honey bees, although pollination by other insects, mainly solitary wild bees, is being investigated as an alternative because of recent declines in the number of honey bee colonies. Our objective is to model the movements of honey bees and determine the conditions under which they will forage in less favorable areas of a tree and its surroundings when other pollinators are present. We hypothesize that foraging in less favorable areas leads to increased movement between trees and increased cross pollination between varieties which is required for successful nut production. We use the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto model (1979) which describes the density of two species in a two-dimensional environment of variable favorableness with respect to intrinsic diffusions and intra- and interspecific interactions of species. The model is applied to almond pollination by honey bees and other pollinators with environmental favorableness based on the distribution of flowers in trees. Using the spectral-Galerkin method in a rectangular domain, we numerically approximated the two-dimensional nonlinear parabolic partial differential system arising in the model. When cross-diffusion or interspecific effects of other pollinators was high, honey bees foraged in less favorable areas of the tree. High cross-diffusion also resulted in increased activity in honey bees in terms of accelerations, decelerations, and changes in direction, indicating rapid redistribution of densities to an equilibrium state. Empirical analysis of the number of honey bees and other visitors in two-minute intervals to almond trees shows a negative relationship, indicating cross-diffusion effects in nature with the potential to increase movement to a different tree with a more favorable environment, potentially increasing nut production.

Finally, I analyzed the Cerrado ant community trying to classify the species in guilds based on taxonomy, throphic preference, nidification habits, foraging and recruitment strategies, behavioral patterns observed on interespecific interactions, size of workers, “readiness of movement” and estimated mature colony population.

Mechanisms of Invasion and Competition in Anolis sagrei and Anolis carolinensis lizards in southeastern Louisiana

Edwards, Jessica R 09 August 2017 (has links)
Invasive species can have a variety of effects on the behavior and ecology of native species. Currently in New Orleans, Louisiana, both A. sagrei and A. carolinensis lizards are relatively abundant, but the A. sagrei population is expanding rapidly. I used a combination of laboratory and field studies to investigate factors that might be influencing local dominance of invasive A. sagrei over native A. carolinensis populations, including habitat use, display behavior, interspecific aggressive interactions, and plasticity. When comparing display behavior and habitat use in anole populations across three field sites in southern Louisiana, I found differences in male display behavior of both species, and also that A. carolinensis perched higher when A. sagrei was present. In staged interspecific interactions, I discovered that A. sagrei females achieved consistently higher aggressive scores than A. carolinensis females, suggesting that female interspecific behavior is probably more important than male behavior in driving changes in habitat use. Lastly, I studied plasticity in several morphological and whole-organism performance variables by rearing males and females of each species on two different perch diameters. I found that sprinting performance in A. sagrei was significantly different between treatment groups, although the morphological differences between perch treatments were subtler than those reported in previous studies. I also found that A. carolinensis females exhibited significant differences in both sprinting and clinging performance, despite no significant differences in male or female morphology between perch size treatments, highlighting the potential for both species-specific and sex-specific plasticity.

Étude des interactions trophiques entre les communautés de carabes et de graines adventices sous l'angle d'un système proie-prédateur / Study of the trophic interactions between weed seed community and ground beetles' community with a prey-predator model

Deroulers, Paul 30 November 2017 (has links)
Weed flora limits crop yields therefore herbicides inputs are important in order to manage weeds. Weeds are at the bottom of the trophic pyramid in agroecosystems, and this explains partly the decrease of biodiversity. Alternatives to manage weeds are studied to reduce negative effect of herbicides on the environment in order to preserve biodiversity. For example, weeds could be managed with granivorous species. Indeed, weed seeds are the origin of the weed community, thus seed consumption could limit weed abundance in cultivated fields. In agroecosystems, several taxa are known to be granivorous such as vertebrates (birds and rodents) and invertebrates (ground beetles). Ground beetles are considered as the main granivorous taxa in agroecosystems and are abundant in temperate agroecosystems. The main goal of this PhD was to study trophic interactions between communities, weed seed and ground beetles, with a prey-predator system in order to estimate the role of ground beetles through their seed consumption in weed seeds management. First, we established a protocol with standardize steps in order to restrain variables to weed seed species at ground beetles’ species. A similar protocol has been adapted to replicate experimentation with the same individuals to measure consumption at different weed seed densities. We then studied interactions between weed seeds and ground beetles with two research axes. We first explored interspecific variation of consumption on the same weed seeds species, Viola arvensis, by ground beetles. Body mass and ratios between mandible length and labrum width had no relation with seed consumption by ground beetles. Thus, other factors were suggested to explain consumption variation such as gut symbionts of ground beetles or preferences for specific weed seed species. Secondly, we measured consumption of 42 weed seed species by four ground beetles to identify abilities in weed seed consumption for these beetles and to explore feeding strategy according to two seed characteristics, seed mass (size) and seed lipid content. Generalism degrees are different according to ground beetles’ species and seem affected by physiological characteristics in both communities. Finally, to assess the potential in weed seed management of ground beetles we determined functional response to four ground beetles on two weed seeds species. We determined type II response for all species (male and female) tested, except for females of P.rufipes. Our results should be interpreted cautiously as, under natural conditions, generalist predators meet many alternatives prey and it could influence functional response type. We showed that there are many complex interactions between weed seed and ground beetles communities, especially due to a wide range of diversity in physiological characteristics in both communities. The potential of ground beetles to regulate seeds must be more precisely explored to evaluate their agronomic interest in weed management.
