The reaction of alkyl iodides with phenyl-iodo-arsines in the presence of mercury has been found to yield arsonium derivatives of triiodomercury (II). Extension of these reactions to other iodides of the Group V elements showed that when reacted with iodomethane and mercury, phosphorus triiodide gave the 1:1 complex of trimethylphosphine and mercuric iodide; antimony triiodide gave tetramethylstibonium triiodomercury (II); diiodophenylstibine reacted only to a limited extent; and bismuth triiodide gave an unstable product. Trifluoroiodomethane failed to react with the Group V iodides in the presence of mercury. Because of the possibility that 1:1 tertiary arsine mercuric iodide complexes are intermediates in the reactions which give rise to arsonium triiodomercury (II) derivatives, the reaction of these complexes with alkyl iodides was investigated. In all cases investigated using iodomethane, direct reaction occurred with the formation of arsonium triiodomercury (II) derivatives.
