Com a sede no Convento do Carmo da cidade, a associação foi fundada por crioulos, filhos de africanos nascidos no Brasil. Através de fontes como o Compromisso, Livro de Receita e Despesa, Jornais, inventários e testamentos, este estudo buscou compreender as normas que a regiam durante um período em que a Igreja Católica incentivou o culto a outras devoções e exigiu uma série de reformas nessas associações. Na Bahia, o principal agente dessas reformas foi o arcebispo D. Romualdo Antônio Seixas, diretor do arcebispado durante os anos de 1827 e 1860. Desse modo, nosso trabalho aborda as motivações da Igreja e seus desdobramentos nas irmandades negras em Cachoeira, a organização social dos irmãos associados em meio a tentativas de mudanças dos seus costumes e a importância da devoção ao Bom Jesus da Paciência para os irmãos em relação a manutenção das práticas fundamentais para a reinvenção cultural dos crioulos. / This research analysis the “Bom Jesus da Paciência” Brotherhood in Cachoeira, Bahia during the years 1840-1883. Its headquarter was in “Convento do Carmo” in the city, so this association was founded by creoles, African children born in Brazil. Through sources like Commitment, Income and Expenditure Book, Newspapers, Inventories and testament, this study searches to understand the rules that governed the Brotherhood in a moment when the Catholic Church encouraged the cult to other devotions and demanded a series of renovations in the brotherhoods. In Bahia, the archbishop Don Romualdo Antônio Seixas was the main representative of these renovations, he was the principal of archbishopric during the years 1827-1860. In this way, this research focuses on the Church motivations and its developments in Brotherhood of the blacks, the social organization of the associated brothers during the attempt to change of their consuetude and the importance of “Bom Jesus da Paciência” devotion for the creoles who founded the Brotherhood and other associated to maintain the fundamental practices for the cultural reinvention of the creoles.
