Assessment of the adequacy of in-house reference materials used as calibration standards in the South African iron and steel industry

Kilongozi, Si-umba Isidore 12 March 2012 (has links)
M.Tech. / Owing to the difficulties in the procurement of internationally certified reference materials for iron and steel, local firms are using their own standards manufactured by casting techniques. It is necessary to assess the integrity of these materials using international standards as control to these in-house reference materials. Macro and micro-examination were carried out to reveal the nature of reference materials and hence evaluate their quality. The consistency of chemical composition of standard materials and the accuracy of the analyses based on the in-house standards were evaluated. The results showed that local standards were characterised by gross casting defects. In comparison the imported standards had micro-structural uniformity and free from casting defects. This shows the essential difference in production method. Casting has severe limitations when it comes to the production of components of low segregation and internal soundness. First, the partitioning of solutes between solid and liquid phases invariably leads to segregation and loss of homogeneity. Second, the volumetric change accompanying solidification results in shrinkage cavities. If stringent production controls are not observed, the proprietary standards are bound to have a widely varying chemical composition. In this regard, the calibration and standardisation would essentially be flawed. Hence the subsequent chemical analyses of standards cannot be reliable. It is necessary to establish an analytical methodology that yields reliable results. Standards used for calibration should have a high degree of chemical purity and homogeneity. The study covers other possible production options for standards that can be used for accurate calibration and standardisation of spectrometers for chemical analysis of iron and steel. The use of vacuum melting followed by rapid casting in special chill mould is recommended.

Female employment in nineteenth-century ironworking districts : Merthyr Tydfil and the Shropshire Coalfield, 1841-1881

Milburn, Amanda Janet Macdonald January 2013 (has links)
This thesis examines female employment in the two ironworking districts of Merthyr Tydfil and the Shropshire Coalfield between 1841 and 1881. Historians have previously suggested that women were practically absent from the workforce in industrial areas. Examination of female employment in the study districts, however, demonstrates not only that women did work, but that they did so in strikingly diverse occupational settings. Evidence drawn from the census, newspapers, parliamentary papers and local manuscript sources will be used to show that their work was vital to the functioning of their local economies, and by consequence, the national prosperity of nineteenth-century Britain. The endemic gendered ideologies of the period undoubtedly influenced the employment opportunities open to these women, yet their work cannot be explained with reference to ideology alone. Analysis of employment patterns in the concentrated geographic settings of Merthyr Tydfil and the Shropshire Coalfield demonstrates that, in many cases, wider economic fluctuations and localised industrial, urban, and social developments had more of an impact on women's work than contemporary discourse.

The relationship of organizational structure and job satisfaction in Iranian iron companies

Khaef, Ahmad Ali 05 December 1989 (has links)
This study examined the ralationship of organizational structure and job satisfaction in Iranain iron companies. Sixteen of 27 Iranian iron companies were randomly selected for the study, and 195 middle managers in the 16 companies were surveyed with a three part instrument consisting of Likert's (1967) Profile of Organizational Characteristics; Smith, Kendal and Hulin's (1969) Job Description Index; and a short demographic questionnaire. For each company, responses to the Profile of Organizational Characteristics were tabulated, means were calculated, and an organizational structure was assigned to the company based on Likert's (1967) classification of organizational structures: System 1, Exploitative/ Authoritative; System 2, Benevolent/Authoritative; System 3, Consultive; and System 4, Participative. The mean job satisfaction of middle managers was also calculated from responses to the Job Description Index, and results from the demographic questionnaire were tabulated. These results were statistically analyzed using Analysis of Variance, the Student-Newman-Keuls Procedure, Pearson's r test, and a correlation coefficient test. The findings revealed no single organizational structure present in Iranian iron companies; however, 14 of the 16 companies had a System 3, Consultive, organizational structure. A positive correlation of job satisfaction with organizational structure was found; as structure changed from more authoritarian/less participative to less authoritarian/more participative, job satisfaction of middle managers increased. No significant relationship was found between organizational structure and organizational size, no significant differences were found in job satisfaction of middle managers in different companies, and no significant relationships were found between job satisfaction and any of the four demographic variables: Type of Work, Education, Job Location, and Marital Status. / Graduation date: 1990
