Nous analysons dans cette thèse la question de l'engagement sociopolitique actuel des artistes en arts visuels au Québec. Cette réflexion se situe dans les efforts déployés afin de saisir les causes d'un regain de l'engagement politique depuis les années 1990, après plusieurs années d'analyses alarmistes sur sa disparition. Mais plus encore, elle s'inscrit dans les tentatives de compréhension des nouvelles caractéristiques de cet engagement. Nous avons fait le pari qu'un détour par l'art pourrait éclairer de façon différente et pertinente ces interrogations. La méthodologie adoptée est celle d'une recherche exploratoire qualitative. Les données collectées proviennent de trois sources : (1) l'analyse documentaire des principaux écrits en sciences sociales et en art sur l'engagement et la mobilisation sociopolitique ou artisticopolitique, (2) dix entrevues réalisées avec des artistes s'estimant interpellés, dans leur art, par des enjeux politiques ou étant considérés ainsi dans le milieu artistique (ATSA, BGL, Doyon/Demers, Danyèle Alain, Sylvie Cotton, Nicole Jolicoeur, Dévora Neumark, Alain-Martin Richard, Jean-Claude St-Hilaire et Raphaëlle de Groot), et (3) l'étude de trois œuvres engagées créées au Québec au cours des dernières années. Nous montrons ainsi que l'art engagé s'est profondément modifié à partir des années 1970, à la suite des changements sociaux, politiques, culturels liés à la crise de la modernité, et en raison des transformations dans la conception de l'art et dans la structuration du milieu artistique. Nous explorons les caractéristiques actuelles de l'art engagé et ce qu'elles nous révèlent sur l'engagement politique. Finalement, nous analysons comment les formes contemporaines de l'art engagé contribuent à redéfinir les contours du politique. / In this thesis we analyze the issue of the current sociopolitical commitment of visual artists in Québec. This study is part of recent efforts made to understand the causes of the re-emergence of political commitment since the 1990s, after some years of alarming analyses concerning its disappearance. But more specifically, this study participates in attempts to understand the new characteristics of this commitment. We postulated that studying artists' work would afford new and significant contributions to the understanding of these issues. The methodology adopted is that of an exploratory qualitative research. The data were collected from three sources: (1) documentary analysis of the principal texts published in the social sciences and in the field of art concerning commitment and sociopolitical or artistic-political mobilization, (2) ten interviews with artists who identify themselves, through their art, as being engaged with or animated by political issues or who are identified as such by the artistic community (ATSA, BGL, Doyon/Demers, Danyèle Alain, Sylvie Cotton, Nicole Jolicoeur, Dévora Neumark, Alain-Martin Richard, Jean-Claude St-Hilaire et Raphaëlle de Groot), and (3) the study of three works of politically engaged art created in Québec in the past few years. Our thesis thus shows that politically engaged art underwent a profound transition starting in the 1970s, in the wake of social, political and cultural changes linked to the crisis of modernity, and in light of transformations undergone in the conception of art and in the structuring of the artistic community. We explore the current characteristics of politically engaged art and what these characteristics tell us about political commitment. Finally, we analyze how contemporary forms of engaged art contribute to changing the contours of that which is political.
