Application and analysis of just in time teaching methods in a calculus courseNatarajan, Rekha January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Mathematics / Andrew G. Bennett / "Just In Time Teaching" (JiTT) is a teaching practice that utilizes web based
technology to collect information about students' background knowledge prior to attending lecture.
Traditionally, students answer either multiple choice, short answer, or brief essay questions outside
of class; based on student responses, instructors adjust their lectures "just-in-time."
In this study, modified JiTT techniques in the form of online review modules were applied to a first
semester calculus course at a large midwestern state university during the spring 2012 term.
The review modules covered algebra concepts and skills relevant to the
new material presented in calculus lecture
(the "just-in-time" adjustment of the calculus lectures was not implemented in this teaching experiment).
The reviews were part of the course grade. Instead of being administered purely "just-in-time," the reviews
were assigned ahead of time as part of the online homework component of Calculus-I.
While previous studies have investigated the use of traditional JiTT techniques in math courses and reported student
satisfaction with such teaching tools, these studies have not addressed gains in student achievement with respect
to specific calculus topics. The goal of this study was to investigate the latter, and to determine whether timing
of the reviews plays a role in bettering student performance.
Student progress on weekly Calculus-I online assignments was tracked in
spring of 2012 and compared to student scores from weekly Calculus-I online assignments from spring 2011, when modified JiTT instruction was not available. For select Calculus-I online assignments during the spring 2012 term,
we discovered that the review modules significantly increased the number of
students receiving perfect scores, even when the reviews were not purely administered ``just-in-time." Analysis of performance, success of review assignments, and future implications are also discussed.

Produktionsstyrning av cylinderbricka : För Atlas Copco, Tierp.Pettersson, Erik January 2014 (has links)
The component workshop at Atlas Copco inTierp intends to reduce the costs inorder to increase their competitiveness. This thesis examines how the productionmanagement around cylinder washersshould be managed in a way that meetsthe customer needs. The customer to thecylinder washer is Atlas Copcos assemblydepartment in Tierp. The purpose of this thesis is to providean alternative way of managing theproduction. A chapter of theory is addedto give the reader an insight ofdifferent types of production managementsystems as well as the underlyingknowledge needed to get a better readingexperience. An introduction of kanbancan in theory help Atlas Copco in thedirection they strive. It should beclear how the purpose of this thesisaffects the cost for the componentworkshop and also how it relates to thecurrent production. The currentsituation is described by explaining howthey use SAP, EOQ and an analysis of how EOQ determine the batch size. Thencalculations on a kanban system is madeand also an idea of how the logistics ofthe kanban system should be managed. From this thesis, conclusions how animplementation of a kanbansystem wouldaffect the component workshop can beshown. By using the overcapacity withthe machine to increase the frequency ofchangeovers leads to reduced batch size. The reduced batch starts a chain of goodconsequences like reduction ofinventory. Changing from a productionmanaged by EOQ to a kanbanflow makes theproduction planning more transparent andrequire less resources. In a complexprocess there’s a lot of factors thatdetermine how the production is managed,a kanbansystem reduce the complexitywith an easy signal when the productionshould start.

Valuation of goods transportation characteristics : A study of a sparsely populated areaWestin, Kerstin January 1994 (has links)
This study describes how consumers and providers of transportation services in a sparsely populated area valuate different transportation characteristics and estimates how these valuations might affect the total goods flows and the flows on individual Origin-Destination links. It also tests Stated-Preference methods as a tool for valuating transportation characteristics. The hypothesis was that transportation consumers in sparsely populated areas are more sensitive to changes in the transportation characteristics cost and frequency than they are to changes in goods safety, time accuracy, and delivery time. The reason for this assumption was that the supply of transport modes and transport operators in these areas is limited in comparison to more urban areas. Acceptable transportation costs, in the sense that transportation is economically feasible, and possibilities to obtain a certain minimum transportation frequency are essential. It might, therefore, be necessary to renounce demands for time accuracy, goods safety, and delivery time. The results indicate that the consumers were most sensitive tp lowered distribution frequency. The probability of accepting a transportation service dropped by .19 when frequency decreased from three times to once per week. Changes in the characteristics delivery time and time accuracy were also significant. Reduced frequency would, from a consumer perspective, also result in the largest impact on the total goods. However, a cost increase of 25 percent and lower goods safety would result in a greater reduction of the total goods flow than would longer delivery time and lower time accuracy. The providers, on the other hand, were very sensitive to increased costs and lower revenues. A drop in quantity from 90 percent to 40 percent vehicle utilization was also significant. However, respondents in the strata 'private trucks' assigned more importance to changes in frequency and quantity. The largest effect on the total goods flow would be caused by a 25 percent cost increase. High demands on time accuracy would affect the goods flow more than would lowered revenue. A significant conclusion is that the Stated-Preference method used is an adequate tool in valuating transportation characteristics. However, great care must be taken in formulating the characteristics and levels used. Also, in addition to the characteristics tested in this study, there may be other characteristics that help explain the probability that consumers and providers in sparsely populated areas will accept a transport / digitalisering@umu
