Os estudos foram realizados durante três anos consecutivos (1980 a 1982) em três áreas no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, duas delas numa região denominada Campo do Saco e a outra no Posto de Aquicultura da Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro. Os territórios ocupados eram pequenos em comparação com outras áreas onde foram estudados. Ocorreu uma reversão do papel sexual e, enquanto as mulheres colocavam e defenderam territórios, os machos incubaram e cuidaram dos jovens. O tamanho dos ovos diminuiu durante a incubação, um fenômeno correlacionado com a energia gasta pelas fêmeas em cada embreagem. Esses pássaros foram vistos como poliandricos no período de três anos do nosso trabalho de campo, um fenômeno correlacionado com o tamanho do território, a inversão do papel sexual ea capacidade das fêmeas de terem mais de uma embreagem por estação (sistema multi-embreagem). Entre os predadores de adultos, jovens e ovos, incluímos o Gallinule Gallopata comum, o Grey Podiceps dominicus, a serpente Mastigodryas bifossatus, o grande rato Rattus norvegicus e o homem. Os estudos de hábitos alimentares foram baseados em observações diretas no campo. Pelo menos cinco tipos diferentes de vocalizações foram detectados e relacionaram-se com o comportamento: chamada de localização de alimentos, chamada de alarme, chamada de ajuda, chamada de copulação e uma chamada escondida para jovens. Nós também fornecemos uma lista de outros pássaros vistos nas áreas. / Although a common bird inhabiting small ponds,marshes, swamps and river margins, little is known about the Wattled JacAlthough a common bird inhabiting small ponds,marshes, swamps and river margins, little is known about the Wattled Jacana Jacana jacana(L., 1766).0ur work was intended to cover some aspects of the behavior and biology of this bird. Field work was undertaken during a period of three consecutive years in three areas in the State of Rio de Janeiro, two of them in a region called "Campo do Saco" and the other in the Aguiculture Center of the UFRRJ. The territories occupied were small as compared with other areas where they were studied. Sex-role reversal occured and while females laid and defended territories, males incubated and took care of the young. The sizes of the eggs decreased during incubation, a phenomenon correlated with the energy spent by the females in each clutch. Among the predators of adults, young and eggs we include the Common Gallinule Gallinula chloropus, the Little Grebe Podiceps dominicus, the snake Mastigodryas bifossatus, the large rat Rattus norvegicus and man. Feeding habits studies were based on direct observations in the field. At least five different kinds of vocalizations were detected and they related to behavior: food location call, alarm call, help call, copulation call and a hiding call for young. we also give a list of other birds seen in the areas.
