This is not a history of press, this is a reflexive work searching for the structural and processual elements which conformed its historical transformations and diferencial agency in time and space. These elements are updated into a theoretical arena made by the intersections of some different but articulated ways of thinking the complex process of interactivity and reflexivity generated into the public spaces of modern societies. The present analysis reconstructs the most substantial changes in the Brazilian journalistic practice, specially at the city of Rio de Janeiro, since the beginning until its contemporary institutional basic configuration. The institutionalization of press is thought in the movement of its historical agency and material structuration as a particular cultural practice working according to some premises, procedures and racionality given by Habermas' philosophical fundaments of modernity and his reconstructive method built in the public space pattern. Also in accordance with the dinamic of culture focused by the 'cultural studies', with its traditions, ruptures, changes and descontinuities renovating and condesing a largely increasing internal referential system with constitutes the specific sphere of communication. / Doutorado / Doutor em Antropologia Social
