Para tanto, há identificação do conceito de notícia de interesse público e do interesse dos leitores por essa categoria de notícia. Essa verificação busca subsídios na área jurídica, no âmbito dos direitos fundamentais - direito à informação como um direito do público, da sociedade -. Completam esse estudo conceitos, histórico e teorias do jornalismo. A pesquisa avalia e cria categorias para cem notícias mais lidas nos sites dos jornais Folha de S.Paulo e de O Globo. Como comparativo, também são examinadas cinqüenta notícias mais lidas dos jornais Clarín, Corriere della Sera, El País, Miami Herald e The Washington Post. O trabalho parte da premissa de que as informações veiculadas pela imprensa são indispensáveis para auxiliar a construção social da realidade e promover o desenvolvimento humano e social dos cidadãos. Com os resultados da investigação, chega-se à proposta de agregar valor à notícia que interessa ao público, para melhor cumprimento da função social da imprensa e do jornalismo - divulgar informações com conteúdo de interesse público - notícia cidadã. _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This study analyses the performance of press and journalism with regard to public interest, the right to inform and the reader’s right to get informed. Therefore there is the identification of the concept of public interest news and the reader’s interest in this category of news. This evaluation looks for subsidiary information in the judicial area, in the sphere of fundamental rights – the right to information as a right of the public, of society-. Concepts, history and theories of journalism complete this study. Research evaluates and creates categories for a hundred most read news items on the sites of the newspapers Folha de S.Paulo and O Globo. For comparison fifty most read news items of the newspapers Clarín, Corriere della Sera, El País, Miami Herald and The Washington Post are also examined. The premise of the study is that information propagated by the press is indispensable to aid in the social construction of reality and the human and social development of citizens. As a result of this research, we propose to aggregate value to news of public interest in order to better fulfill the social function of press and journalism – to propagate news with content of public interest – quality news.
