The Realities of the Informal Sector in Kenya and its Economic Implications

This thesis is focused on informal sector establishments in Kenya and how they contributes to employment creation, income generation and economic development. The research examines how the informal sector has developed between the years 1986-1989. The study indicates that the informal sector can absorb those people who are unemployed and cannot find jobs in the formal sector. The first chapter describes the definition and interpretation of the informal sector. The discussion of the related .literature, development of the informal sector, politics of the urban informal sector and controversies are described in chapter II. Chapter III describes the regional and sectoral analysis in employment generation. Chapter IV focuses on projections and promotion policies. Concluding remarks and the importance of the informal sector are represented in chapter V.

Fertility decline among Abagusii women : the application of an adapted proximate determinants model

The primary objective of this thesis is to account for the fertility decline among Abagusii women in South-western Kenya. The motivation behind the study was based on the fact that the fertility trends associated with this group of people had not been studied before. This is surprising because the Abagusii recorded one of the world's highest total fertility rates of 10.4 in 1979 (Omosa 1994; Osiemo 1986; Oucho 1990), but has also experienced significant fertility decline. The total fertility rate in 2004 stood at 4.7, (Anyara 2009). The analytical framework that is adopted is Stover's (1998) adaptation of the Bongaarts et. al. (1984) Proximate Determinants Model. These determinants such as contraceptive use, post-partum insusceptibility, sexual activity, abortion and sterility represent behavioural and biological variables that affect fertility directly. The manner in which they are employed involves using the index which indicates the extent to which each proximate determinant reduces the fertility of the group in question.

The era of Multinational Corporations (MNCs) is so significant in the development of the Less Developed Countries (LDCs) as was the era of the Industrial Revolution in the development of the now More Developed countries (MDCs). It could be referred to as one of the major economic frontiers in the LDCs as is the computer frontier in the MDCs now. Naturally therefore, there are problems of distrust, fear of eventual crisis, uncertainty of the correct path and a pain in policy making. Coupled with the North/South delicate relationship, the MNC's (which mostly comes from the North) acceptability in LDCs (which are in the South) is of mixed feelings. In this paper therefore we shall explore some of the problems affecting the MNC/LDC relationship. Thus, among the questions to ponder on are what has been the impact, is it harmful or beneficial, do all MNCs have the same impact and how does each party interpret each impact? These ques~ tions often end up in accusations between MNCs and LDCs in general without devouring each other. But not without a loss of resources especially time and extra costs involved in speculations on each other as well as cushioning of uncertain events that one party suspects of the other.

Knowledge and Networking in an Emerging Kenyan Market : A case study of Hydro Standard AB

The aim of this paper is to understand the roles knowledge and network play in the internationalization process of a small company in an emerging Kenyan market. The research is based on a qualitative approach using an embedded case study design where primary data was collected from Hydro Standard AB, Swedish Trade Council and two water companies in Kenya; Mombasa and Mavoko water companies. Semi-structured and in-depth interviews were used in the project. Findings from the study show that the internationalization process of Hydro Standard AB was successful and mainly driven by building of networks. The study also found out that tacit knowledge is crucial for a firm to develop itself in the Kenyan market which is very informal. Through tacit knowledge, a firm is able to gain knowledge and handle challenges concerning business culture and other unwritten rules found in the market. Further, building relationships with politicians or local branch managers can enhance a firm's performance.

Drug abuse in the secondary school in Kenya : developing a programme for prevention and intervention

Drug abuse is becoming an increasing problem in Kenya. A number of studies carried out in the country show that almost every Kenyan youngster at one time or another experiments with drugs, especially beer and cigarettes. The major cause of concern is that a significant proportion of these young people eventually get addicted posing a threat to their own health and safety, while creating difficulties for their families and the public at large into difficulties. This study sought to establish the current trend of drug abuse among students in Kenyan secondary schools, and to analyze the strategies used to address the problem. The ultimate aim was to propose a programme for prevention and intervention. The study is a descriptive survey. In view of this, the field survey method was adopted to collect quantitative and qualitative data, using questionnaires and interviews. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used in data analysis, thus there was a mixed model research design approach to data analysis. The analysis of structured items was mainly done using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The key findings from the study were that drug abuse among students is common; both boys and girls have abused drugs with the majority being in boys‟ schools; the greatest ratio of drug abusers to non-abusers among the sampled schools are aged between 20 and 22 years; there is a significant relationship between drug abuse and age, use of drugs by other family members and easy access to drugs. A variety of factors contribute to drug abuse with the majority of students citing curiosity, acceptance by peers and ignorance as to the dangers of drug abuse as the main reasons. Both the school administrators and teachers face a number of challenges in an attempting to curb drug abuse in schools. The study makes a number of recommendations for policy and further research. Tacit knowledge management in public institutions in Kenya: a case of the Kenya Institute for Public Research and Analysis (KIPPRA) Nairobi

Tacit Knowledge is critical in an organization's ability to sustain a long-term competitive advantage. The systematic process for acquiring, organizing, sustaining and renewing tacit knowledge of employees has enabled organizations to survive in a robust economy. This study investigates the management of tacit knowledge at the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA). The objectives of the study were: to identify the sources and types of knowledge at KIPPRA; identify the enabling resources for tacit knowledge sharing; determine how tacit knowledge can be reused for innovation and competitive advantage; establish the role of management in creating a conducive environment for tacit knowledge; identify the challenges experienced in the management of tacit knowledge; give recommendations and propose a model/framework for tacit knowledge management at KIPPRA. The study adopted a qualitative research method. Interviews and observation were used as primary data collection methods. The study targeted 60 employees of KIPPRA consisting of Researchers, Young Professionals, Heads of Division, a Knowledge Manager and Administrative staff. Qualitative data collected was organized, categorized and reported in verbatim. Pie charts and tables were used to give a graphical representation of the bio data of respondents. The study found that: KIPPRA values knowledge as an asset but does not practice tacit knowledge management, both tacit and explicit knowledge exists however, no real effort has gone into the management of tacit knowledge. The study also found that KIPPRA had tacit knowledge sharing, capture, transfer and storage avenues that have not been capitalized on. ICT infrastructure is available however it does not support tacit knowledge sharing. No Communities of Practice exist at KIPPRA but tacit knowledge is reused for innovation, development and competitive advantage. KIPPRA’s management has provided a conducive environment for tacit knowledge to thrive but trust, knowledge asymmetry, and hierarchical challenges have hindered tacit knowledge harnessing. No tacit knowledge related incentives are offered at KIPPRA. The study also revealed that employees experienced challenges such as identification and understanding of tacit knowledge, access of tacit knowledge sharing platforms, and access to individuals with specific tacit knowledge, tacit knowledge hoarding, individualism and ICT related challenges in accessing tacit knowledge. Even thought the necessary elements required to facilitate Tacit Knowledge Management are available, no effort has been made to customize them to harness tacit knowledge. The study concluded that for KIPPRA to have a competitive advantage it is important that the Knowledge Manager, with the Support of KIPPRA’s Management, have concerted efforts for harnessing tacit knowledge. Key recommendations include: establishment of Communities of Practice at KIPPRA that bring together like minded individuals and also enable the building of relationships based on trust among the employees, and investment in ICT mechanisms specific to tacit knowledge management to enhance the harnessing and codification of captured tacit knowledge. Employees should also be trained on the value of tacit knowledge sharing and individualism should be discouraged. The study also recommends the adoption of a proposed framework for managing tacit knowledge at KIPPRA. / Information Science
