Chronicler par excellence of the 1900s in Brazil, João do Rio brought the literary narrative report to the Brazilian press, and by exploring the two forms of intellectual activity - literature and journalism - established himself as one of the greatest writers of his time. He transformed criticism and did reporting, and the two merged into an unpretentious, engaging, and revelatory account, a product of the ephemeral day-to-day, and without pretension to last more than one issue, since it is the product of the newspaper, but it remained in the memory and the admiration of posterity as the mundane chronicle of a rare journalist. To achieve this goal, we rely on the theoretical assumptions of the History of Linguistic Ideas, a particular attention given to the perceptible in relation to the path of the senses, in our case, the senses of a linguistic knowledge produced by the make-up of our language. Language and the linguistic instruments are historical objects that are closely linked to the formation of the country, the nation, and the State, and knowing the Portuguese language of João do Rio's time will produce knowledge about the national identity of Brazil in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. The act of knowing has, by definition, a temporal thickness, a horizon of retrospection (Auroux, 2001:11) / Este trabalho analisa o saber construído em torno da língua, sociedade e identidade nacional, num dado momento, como produto de uma reflexão metalinguística, por meio da obra de João do Rio. Cronista por excelência do 1900 brasileiro, João do Rio trouxe para a imprensa literária brasileira a crônica-reportagem e, explorando as duas formas de atividade intelectual - literatura e jornalismo , consagrou-se como um dos maiores cronistas de sua época. Transformou a crítica e fez a reportagem, e uma e outra fundiram-se numa crônica despretensiosa, insinuante e reveladora, filha de um cotidiano efêmero, e sem pretensão a durar mais que uma edição, uma vez que é filha do jornal, mas que permaneceu na lembrança e na admiração da posteridade a crônica mundana de um jornalista raro. Para atingir esse objetivo, apoiamo-nos nos pressupostos teóricos da História das Ideias Linguísticas, escuta particular do sensível em relação ao caminho dos sentidos, em nosso caso, os sentidos de um conhecimento linguístico produzido junto à constituição de nossa língua. A língua e os instrumentos linguísticos são objetos históricos que estão intimamente ligados à formação do país, da nação, do Estado e saber da língua portuguesa à época de João do Rio é produzir o conhecimento sobre a identidade nacional no Brasil, no fim do século XIX, começo do XX. O ato de saber possui, por definição, uma espessura temporal, um horizonte de retrospecção (Auroux, 2001:11)
