A Study of Investment Location Selection for Taiwan High-Tech Industry - Case of Opto-Communication Industry

Lee, Mei-fen 27 July 2009 (has links)
Digital time is coming, digital applications are getting bigger to the bandwidth demand, the optical fiber communication industry getting more important. Taiwan businessman joined the supply chain by flexible production support and reduced the costs of spare parts and components. With the cost thrust force and the Asian market attraction, the production center of huge plants have moved toward the Asian and Pacific area, and it makes Taiwan manufacturers become low-cost and good-quality suppliers of spare parts and components. Under price's pressure and Chinese market's fast rising, this is a good opportunity for Taiwan manufacturers. This research is about foreign investment of location choice theories, clustering effects, and eclectic paradigms to find out its best model and location. The finding pointed out that Taiwan optical communication entrepreneur must expanded upstream or formed alliances downstream, ex. equipment manufacturers. The enterprise must get off low-cost opinion, and endeavor to research and developing work. The optical communication industry Clustering effect is not only on manufacturing, but also being emphasized on function communications between research and marketing. The globalization lies in whether to have the conformity resources and operation ability. This research shows the investment environment vicissitude and the global thinking, and is expected to help the decision-making suggestions offering.

Hierarchical Cell-Structured Routing Scheme with GPS for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Huang, Shih-kai 01 February 2010 (has links)
Many location-based routing protocols have been developed recently, and have been demonstrated to be scalable and efficient for packet routing in mobile ad hoc networks. Using location-based routing requires that a node obtains the node position with which it wants to communicate. This task is generally achieved by a location service. This work presents a novel routing protocol, called Hierarchical Cell-Structured Routing (HCR) Scheme, with a location service. The network area is divided into a number of regular triangular regions, called cells. The nodes forward the packets by some chosen cells, and are classified to be three level hierarchical structures. The hierarchical approach of HCR makes it especially suitable for high network density. Moreover, the traffic loads in HCR are shared by all nodes rather than just by some specific nodes, thus the overhead is reduced at high traffic loads. Simulation results indicate that HCR has better performance than Location-Aid Routing (LAR), in terms of packet delivery ratio, end-to-end delay and overhead in high traffic load.

Clues from the beaten path : location estimation with bursty sequences of tourist photos / Location estimation with bursty sequences of tourist photos

Chen, Chao-Yeh 14 February 2012 (has links)
Existing methods for image-based location estimation generally attempt to recognize every photo independently, and their resulting reliance on strong visual feature matches makes them most suited for distinctive landmark scenes. We observe that when touring a city, people tend to follow common travel patterns---for example, a stroll down Wall Street might be followed by a ferry ride, then a visit to the Statue of Liberty or Ellis Island museum. We propose an approach that learns these trends directly from online image data, and then leverages them within a Hidden Markov Model to robustly estimate locations for novel sequences of tourist photos. We further devise a set-to-set matching-based likelihood that treats each ``burst" of photos from the same camera as a single observation, thereby better accommodating images that may not contain particularly distinctive scenes. Our experiments with two large datasets of major tourist cities clearly demonstrate the approach's advantages over traditional methods that recognize each photo individually, as well as a naive HMM baseline that lacks the proposed burst-based observation model. / text

Understanding and appling principles of location efficiency : market based strategies for increasing household spending power

Culbertson, Devin Elijah 21 November 2013 (has links)
Location Efficiency refers to the notion of living and working in close proximity to oneʼs daily needs so as to minimize travel time and cost. Communities that are trying to encourage mixed use, transit oriented neighborhoods could benefit substantially by understanding this concept and taking steps to increase the financial incentive associated with location efficient development and housing choice. This report starts by giving a conceptual overview of location efficiency and outlining key relationships between macro factors that impact its viability. Market based strategies to increase use of alternative transportation modes and increase location efficient savings are presented here as a politically viable way to achieve pedestrian oriented smart growth without public subsidy. Final suggestions for implementation guide the candidate community through the analysis and application of these concepts / text
