To respond, a bibliographic review was conducted of authors who look at education, the world of labor and social transformation to understand the structural relations of interdependence among the themes. An evaluation was conducted of the curriculum for a course for mechanical technicians, to see if there is content that assists students to develop critical thinking. In addition, data was analyzed from a study conducted at the Pelotas campus of IFSul that traces the socioeconomic profile of high school, technical and technological school students in 2008. For this study, we only used the data concerning the students in the mechanical technician course. The paper concludes that although professional education attends the target public at which it is aimed, it does not contribute to social transformation. It is clearly understood that the role of education in this process is important, although daily action is needed to revive and reinforce the awareness that there are other components (distribution of land and income), which support this process and that the reality marked by the advance of neoliberalism and the loss of humanistic values, will only be transformed through the action of organized men and women who collectively believe that another world is possible / Com esta dissertação pretendeu-se responder à seguinte questão: Quais as contribuições da educação profissional para o processo de transformação social? Para respondê-la, foi feita uma revisão bibliográfica com autores que tratam de educação, mundo do trabalho e transformação social, como forma de entender as relações estruturais de interdependência entre os temas. Após, foi feita uma avaliação da grade curricular do curso Técnico de Mecânica, investigada a existência de conteúdos que possibilitem ao aluno o desenvolvimento do pensamento crítico. Além disso, foram analisados dados relativos a uma pesquisa realizada no Campus Pelotas do IFSul, que traçou o perfil socioeconômico dos alunos dos ensinos médio, técnico e tecnológico, no ano de 2008. Para fins deste trabalho, fez-se um recorte envolvendo apenas os alunos do curso técnico de Mecânica. Por fim, conclui-se que, embora a educação profissional atenda o públicoalvo a que se destina, ela não contribui para o processo de transformação social, tendo claro que o papel da educação nesse processo é importante, porém é preciso agir cotidianamente, buscando resgatar/reforçar a consciência de que há outros componentes (distribuição da terra e da renda) balizadores desse processo. Essa realidade, marcada pelo avanço do neoliberalismo e pela perda de valores humanísticos, somente será transformada através de ações de homens e mulheres organizados coletivamente, que acreditam que outro mundo é possível
