An investigation of visitor and resident place perceptions of Mid Wales, and an evaluation of the potential of such perceptions to shape economic development in the area

Emanuel, Louise Coralie January 1997 (has links)
The research investigates visitor and resident place perceptions of Mid Wales and evaluates the potential of such perceptions to shape economic development in the area. A review of literature indicated a need for an holistic approach to place. It was suggested that a starting point towards achieving this is to envisage place as three components - the real, the expected and the perceived. The real place is described using secondary statistical information and maps of the area. the expected place is described using topographical writing and guide books. The perceived place is examined through a combination of questionnaires and interviews with residents and visitors. These investigate perceptions of the landscape and economy of Mid Wales. The 'perceived places' of residents and visitors are described. A number of agencies based in Mid Wales were also interviewed to examine i) their perceptions of Mid Wales' ii) the way in which visitor and resident perceptions are incorporated into the policy development process, and, iii) their responses to some of the preliminary outcomes of the research. The research concluded that both residents and visitors have well defined, but different place perceptions of Mid Wales. Visitor perceptions are more affected by the expected place than the real, whilst resident perceptions are more affected by the real place than the expected. There are currently few mechanisms by which place perceptions are directly incorporated into the development process. However, the place perceptions of agencies were found to be close to those of the groups they represented; it is suggested that place perceptions are fundamental truths shared by groups, which are so strong as to actually subconsciously drive the policy development process. Policy implications are suggested, as are ideas for future research.

Traveling through natural landscapes: the speleology as a touristic experience

Hobo, Fernanda Etsumi 08 August 2011 (has links)
The main objective of this research is to highlight the straight relationship between tourism and the natural landscape, where the geomorphology, the different climates, the water and its behavior, fauna and flora may become attractive for the tourists eyes, increasingly distant from the natural world in their day to day. Through a broad survey of the literature and its careful analysis, it was possible to demonstrate that the appreciation of each type of landscape and the realization of its resources in touristic attractions have a strong relationship with the construction of the imaginary and environmental perception, which can vary from culture to culture. In this context, in a time when the ecological sensitivity has been building as a hallmark of the post-industrial society, the appreciation of nature has attracted more people to the practice of ecotourism, and, in this scenario, the caves emerge as one of these attractions. The cave environment provides visitors a mixture of feelings of discomfort and discovery, featuring a world totally distinct from what is known on the surface, firming speleotourism as a different proposal for tourism. In this research, it was adopted Parque Estadual Intervales as a prominent example of speleotourism allied to ecotourism, where the field work took place. Such theme, about the tourism in natural areas, evokes the issue of the growth of touristic use of caves, including also the problem of degradation of environment, including its biodiversity, pointing, then, the need for special care of these environments and their surroundings, so that the activity does not fall into self-destruction. Its concluded from the study, that the tourism should establish a relationship of deep recognition of the place, allowing tourists to discover whats behind the scenery, their meanings, taking care not to fall into a flat shallow, in which the steps must be fast, timed and determined by ready scripts. The trip cant become just a way in which many landscapes pervade and the tourists watch everything passively.
