Chiarella Viale, Mateo 19 December 2013 (has links)
Tesis

"¡ Y yo seguiré a caballo!"

FOPPA PEDRETTI, CLARA 13 June 2014 (has links)
The history of the Dominican Republic is cluttered with a string of bloody fights, invasions, wars, cruel dictatorships, military occupations and aggressive natural disasters. Nevertheless the Dominicans remember the ‘Trujillo’s Era’ as the darkest and more sorrowful period, that has deeply scarred their past and whose essence silently drags on in their present. Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina is only the last dictator who has oppressed the Dominican people, but he is known as one of the most vicious and ruthless dictators that have plagued Latin America. His diabolic charisma and his cruel actions have indelibly marked the identity and the soul of his people, becoming a literary inspiration that could cross the island’s confines and give rise to the novela del trujillato. This thesis aims to analyze the evolution of the novela del trujillato and the character of Trujillo both in the Dominican context and in the novels, written by foreign authors, Galíndez by Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, En el tiempo de las mariposas by Julia Álvarez, La Fiesta del Chivo by Mario Vargas Llosa and La breve y maravillosa vida de Óscar Wao by Junot Díaz.

Worthy of their esteem : the mayoral years of Leonidas A. Guthrie as reported in the Muncie morning star, 1905-1910

Hooten-Bivens, Mary Ann January 1992 (has links)
The major purpose of this study is to examine the mayoral years of Leonidas A. Guthrie, from 1905 to 1910. Guthrie (1875-1964), a Muncie, Indiana lawyer, reform leader, and philanthropist, served as mayor during a period when Muncie began to evolve into a modern city. His administration saw a number of changes in Muncie as the city entered the twentieth century, including the first brick streets and the widespread installation of electric street lights. In spite of these advancements, Guthrie, who kept exhaustive notes on every facet of his life, left no chronicle of his mayoral years amidst the large collection of his personal papers housed at Special Collections at Ball State University.Further research discovered that Guthrie's term was marred by controversy surrounding the city fire department and the Great Goddard Fire of 1907, the Interurban Strike of 1908, and the battle between the "wet" and "dry" elements which eventually led to the passage of the local option law and a "dry" vote for Delaware County. Therefore, this dissertation is a, chronological account of Guthrie's administration and an examination of the controversies and political turmoil surrounding Guthrie's mayoral years. / Department of History

This study aims to analyze, from a comparatist perspective, both the relations between the fictional and historical discourses and the narrative resources present in Mario Vargas Llosa's historical novel, La fiesta del chivo (2000). The novel reinvents the discourses which refer to the history of the so-called 'Era of Trujillo' in the Dominican Republic by means of, among other poetic procedures, the structural categories of carnavalization, parody, dialogism and intertextuality. By resorting to these categories, the novel rewrites and challenges the assertions of history and promotes new insights on past events. In order to examine the historical events present in the fictional narrative, this study makes reference to the history of the Dominican Republic from 1930 to 1961, which is the period referred to in the work of fiction. This study also briefly discusses Mario Vargas Llosa's creative process and uses it as a way to gain access to the specificities of focalized novel. The literary analysis emphasizes how the novel carries out a parodistic review of the myth of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, the strogman of the abovementioned period, and highlights his demystification, which makes the human dimension of the main character evident. Due to this procedure, the novel carnavalizes history, making it possible to do alternative readings of historical discourses.
