The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the international legal regime of civil liability and compensation for pollution damage caused by oil spills in maritime transportation by ship, focusing on four conventions: the International Convention on civil liability for oil pollution damage of 1969; International Convention on Civil Liability for by Oil Pollution damage of 1992; International Convention on the Establishment of an International Fund for Compensation for Oil Pollution damage, 1992 and the Supplementary Fund Protocol of 2003. In the second chapter it is analyzed each of the conventions that form the international regime and its evolution in consequence of the historical cases. The third chapter is dedicated to the study of compensation for damage, addressing practical and procedural aspects. Finally, the last chapter presents a simplified comparative table and the practical results are analyzed as well as it offers the impressions and perspectives with respect to the regime, culminating in the final considerations that seek to answer if such regime is satisfactory.
