MILLIMETER/SUBMILLIMETER SPECTROSCOPY OF TiO (X-3 Δr): THE RARE TITANIUM ISOTOPOLOGUES

Lincowski, A. P., Halfen, D. T., Ziurys, L. M. 01 December 2016 (has links)
Pure rotational spectra of the rare isotopologues of titanium oxide, (TiO)-Ti-46, (TiO)-Ti-47, (TiO)-Ti-49, and (TiO)-Ti-50, have been recorded using a combination of Fourier transform millimeter-wave (FTmmW) and millimeter/submillimeter direct absorption techniques in the frequency range 62-538 GHz. This study is the first complete spectroscopic characterization of these species in their X-3 Delta(r) ground electronic states. The isotopologues were created by the reaction of N2O or O-2 and titanium vapor, produced either by laser ablation or in a Broida-type oven, and observed in the natural Ti isotopic abundances. Between 10 and 11 rotational transitions J + 1 <-> J were measured for each species, typically in all 3 spin-orbit ladders Omega-1,2, and 3. For (TiO)-Ti-47 and (TiO)-Ti-49, hyperfine structure was resolved, originating from the titanium-47 and titanium-49 nuclear spins of I = 5/2 and 7/2, respectively. For the Omega = 1 and 3 components, the hyperfine structure was found to follow a classic Lande pattern, while that for Omega = 2 appeared to be perturbed, likely a result of mixing with the nearby isoconfigurational a(1)Delta state. The spectra were analyzed with a case (a) Hamiltonian, and rotational, spin-orbit, and spin-spin parameters were determined for each species, as well as magnetic hyperfine and electric quadrupole constants for the two molecules with nuclear spins. The most abundant species, (TiO)-Ti-48, has been detected in circumstellar envelopes. These measurements will enable other titanium isotopologues to be studied at millimeter wavelengths, providing Ti isotope ratios that can test models of nucleosynthesis.

TERAHERTZ SPECTROSCOPY OF CrH (X 6Σ+) AND AlH (X 1Σ+)

Halfen, D. T., Ziurys, L. M. 09 December 2016 (has links)
New laboratory measurements of hydrides have been carried out using terahertz direct absorption spectroscopy. Spin components of the N = 2 <- 1 transition of the free radical CrH (X (6)Sigma(+)) have been recorded in the range 730-734 GHz, as well as a new measurement of the J = 2 <- 1 line of AlH (X (1)Sigma(+)) near 755 GHz. Both species were created in an AC discharge of H-2, argon, and metal vapor. For CrH, the chromium source was Cr(CO)(6), while AlH was produced from Al(CH3)3. The J = 4.5 <- 3.5 and 3.5 <- 2.5 fine-structure components were recorded for CrH, each which consists of resolved proton hyperfine doublets. For AlH, the two main quadrupole components, F = 4.5 <- 3.5 and 3.5 <- 2.5, of the J = 2 <- 1 transition were observed as blended features. These data were analyzed with previous 1 <- 0 millimeter/submillimeter measurements with (6)Sigma and (1)Sigma Hamiltonians for chromium and aluminum hydrides, respectively, and rotational, fine-structure (CrH only), and hyperfine constants were derived. The new measurements have resulted in refined spectroscopic parameters for both species, as well as direct measurement of the respective 2 <- 1 rotational transitions. This work also resolves a 10 MHz discrepancy in the frequency of the AlH line. CrH and AlH have already been observed in the photospheres of stars via their electronic transitions. These data will facilitate their discovery at submillimeter/terahertz wavelengths in circumstellar envelopes and perhaps in diffuse clouds.

The 12C/ 13C Ratio in Sgr B2(N): Constraints for Galactic Chemical Evolution and Isotopic Chemistry

Halfen, D. T., Woolf, N. J., Ziurys, L. M. 22 August 2017 (has links)
A study has been conducted of 12C/13C ratios in five complex molecules in the Galactic center. H2CS, CH3CCH, NH2CHO, CH2CHCN, and CH3CH2CN and their 13C-substituted species have been observed in numerous transitions at 1, 2, and 3 mm, acquired in a spectral-line survey of Sgr B2(N), conducted with the telescopes of the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO). Between 22 and 54 individual, unblended lines for the 12C species and 2–54 for 13C-substituted analogs were modeled in a global radiative transfer analysis. All five molecules were found to consistently exhibit two velocity components near VLSR ∼ 64 and 73 km s−1, with column densities ranging from Ntot ∼ 3 × 1014 − 4 × 1017 cm−2 and ∼2 × 1013 − 1 × 1017 cm−2 for the 12C and 13C species, respectively. Based on 14 different isotopic combinations, ratios were obtained in the range 12C/13C = 15 ± 5 to 33 ± 13, with an average value of 24 ± 7, based on comparison of column densities. These measurements better anchor the 12C/13C ratio at the Galactic center, and suggest a slightly revised isotope gradient of 12C/13C = 5.21(0.52) DGC + 22.6(3.3). As indicated by the column densities, no preferential 13C enrichment was found on the differing carbon sites of CH3CCH, CH2CHCN, and CH3CH2CN. Because of the elevated temperatures in Sgr B2(N), 13C isotopic substitution is effectively “scrambled,” diminishing chemical fractionation effects. The resulting ratios thus reflect stellar nucleosynthesis and Galactic chemical evolution, as is likely the case for most warm clouds.

Vanadium Oxide in the Spectra of Mira Variables

Castelaz, Michael W., Luttermoser, Donald G., Piontek, Robert A. 20 July 2000 (has links)
As a preliminary step in deducing Teff and log (g) of Mira variables as a function of phase, a comparison is made between spectra synthesized from LTE stellar atmosphere models and observed spectra. The observed spectra show obvious vanadium oxide (VO) absorption bands. However, the molecular line list used to produce the synthetic spectra does not include the bound-bound VO opacities. The wavenumbers, line oscillator strengths, and lowest energy levels are needed to calculate these opacities. The equations, constants, and experimentally determined factors required to calculate the line oscillator strengths and lowest energy levels from experimentally determined wavenumbers are presented. The effect of including the wavenumbers, line oscillator strengths, and lowest energy levels of the VO BX (0, 0) band are calculated and show the expected absorption features observed in the spectra of Mira variables. In the VO B-X (0, 0) band the line oscillator strengths range from about 0.05 to 3.

On-line local load measurement based voltage instability prediction

Bahadornejad, Momen January 2005 (has links)
Voltage instability is a major concern in operation of power systems and it is well known that voltage instability and collapse have led to blackout or abnormally low voltages in a significant part of the power system. Consequently, tracking the proximity of the power system to an insecure voltage condition has become an important element of any protection and control scheme. The expected time until instability is a critical aspect. There are a few energy management systems including voltage stability analysis function in the real-time environment of control centres, these are based on assumptions (such as off-line models of the system loads) that may lead the system to an insecure operation and/or poor utilization of the resources. Voltage instability is driven by the load dynamics, and investigations have shown that load restoration due to the on-load tap changer (OLTC) action is the main cause of the voltage instability. However, the aggregate loads seen from bulk power delivery transformers are still the most uncertain power system components, due to the uncertainty of the participation of individual loads and shortcomings of the present approaches in the load modeling. In order to develop and implement a true on-line voltage stability analysis method, the on-line accurate modeling of the higher voltage (supply system) and the lower voltage level (aggregate load) based on the local measurements is required. In this research, using the changes in the load bus measured voltage and current, novel methods are developed to estimate the supply system equivalent and to identify load parameters. Random changes in the load voltage and current are processed to estimate the supply system Thevenin impedance and the composite load components are identified in a peeling process using the load bus data changes during a large disturbance in the system. The results are then used to anticipate a possible long-term voltage instability caused by the on-load tap changer operation following the disturbance. Work on the standard test system is provided to validate the proposed methods. The findings in this research are expected to provide a better understanding of the load dynamics role in the voltage stability, and improve the reliability and economy of the system operation by making it possible to decrease uncertainty in security margins and determine accurately the transfer limits.

Adaptivní regulátory s prvky umělé inteligence / Adaptive Controllers with Elements of Artificial Intelligence

Šulová, Markéta January 2009 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to improve the control quality of the adaptive systems (Self Tuning Controllers). The thesis mainly deals with problematical identification part of the adaptive system. This part demonstrates a weak point for existing adaptive systems. Paradoxically, the quality of the adaptive system depends mainly on the identification part because on the basis of the process model obtained by identification are worked out parameters of a control part, afterwards the control action plan is established. Knowledge of the modern control methods is used and a new identification algorithm for closed loop identification is proposed. This simple, fast and efficient algorithm overcomes all disadvantages of current classical identification methods based on least mean-square algorithms. The possibility of the choice of a short sample time, one tuning parameter ability to adjust the control process, the ability to identify processes in real use belong to its main goals. This algorithm was built in the adaptive system and then it was tested on a set of simulation and real models with surprisingly excellent results. The successful implementation of the algorithm into the programmable logic controller was also realized. One part of the thesis introduces a new universal graphics environment for testing and verifying control algorithms.
