From W.H. Auden’s The Age of Anxiety to Sigmund Freud’s Civilization and Its Discontents, modernists have frequently attested to the anxiety permeating members of modern civilisation. While critics have treated anxiety as a consequence of the historical circumstances of the modernist period—two World Wars and the disintegration of European empires—my aim is to view anxiety in both a psychoanalytical and political light and investigate modernist anxiety as a narrative ploy that diagnoses the modern condition. Defining modernist anxiety as feelings of fear and alienation that reveal the uncanny relation between self and ideological state apparatuses which themselves suffer from trauma, perversion, and neurosis—I focus on the works of four key modernist writers—Sigmund Freud, Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster, and Gertrude Stein. These authors have repeatedly constructed the mind as an open system, making the psyche one of the sites most vulnerable to the power of colonial ideology but also the modernist space par excellence to narrate the building and falling of empire. While the first part of my dissertation investigates the neurosis of post-war London in Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, the second part of my thesis discusses the perverse demands of the colonial system in Forster’s A Passage to India and Woolf’s The Waves, arguing that Woolf and Forster extend Freud’s understanding of repetition compulsion by demonstrating that the colonial system derives a “perverse” pleasure from repeating its own impossible demands. The concluding section of my dissertation discusses Woolf and Stein’s queer primitivism as the antidote to anxiety and the transcendence of perversity. My dissertation revives Freud’s role in the modernist project: Freud not only provides avant-garde writers with a theory of consciousness, but his construction of the fragmented psyche—a construction which had come to dominate modernist renditions of internality by the early-twentieth century—functions as a political stratagem for an imperial critique. / Thesis (Ph.D, English) -- Queen's University, 2013-03-11 16:48:57.865

Este trabalho visa estabelecer uma relação entre literatura e psicanálise. Muito já se falou sobre o cruzamento entre essas duas práxis distintas, independentes e autônomas. Hoje, parece inevitável interligá-las, sobretudo, teoricamente. A idéia deste projeto nasce, inicialmente, do desejo de aproveitar uma relação pouco explorada entre dois autores franceses contemporâneos. Falecidos num intervalo de seis meses entre o final de 1981 e começo de 1982, Jacques Lacan e Georges Perec fizeram história na cena intelectual francesa do final do século XX. A fim de mostrar a amplitude dos estudos em torno da obra destes dois autores, cada um em seu território, é possível dizer que ambos se preocuparam, primordialmente, com a questão da letra, seja Lacan voltado para experiência analítica, seja Perec inteiramente imerso no campo literário. Situados na passagem do estruturalismo ao pós-estruturalismo francês, Lacan e Perec não se cruzaram diretamente. Gostaríamos de compreender as conseqüências de uma nova teoria do sujeito que se esboçava a partir da segunda metade do século XX, principalmente, a leitura que ambos fizeram de autores que freqüentaram e foram atravessados. Lacan deve ser visto como um analista. Perec tomado como um escritor. Porém, uma pesquisa de tal natureza pode se justificar pelos seguintes aspectos: 1. Ambos operam sobre o inconsciente. E daí decorre a enorme importância da obra e o ensino de Jacques Lacan. 2. Trata-se de difundir e disseminar um autor da maior envergadura, pouco conhecido e explorado no Brasil até hoje, que é o genial virtuose das letras e fenômeno literário internacional que é Georges Perec. / This dissertation aims to establish a relation between literature and psychoanalysis. A lot has been said about the crossing between those distinct praxis. Nowadays, it seams inevitable to interconnect at least theorically. The idea of this project arises initially from the wish to approach the relationship not explored until now from those two French contemporaneous authors. Deceased on interval of six months in the end of 1981 and the beginning of 1982, Jacques Lacan and Georges Perec made history in the intellectual French scene in the end of 20th century. To bring along the wideness of those researches, each one in your own territory, it´s possible to say that both are primordially with deep concern toward the subject of the letter. Lacan in the psychoanalytical experience and Perec submerse in the literary field. Lacan and Perec, placed from French structuralism and pos-structuralism, haven´t crossed directly. It would like to comprehend the consequences of the new theory of the subject that started from the second part of 20th century especially your studies across by other authors. Lacan must being seeing as an psychoanalyst. Perec as a writer. However a research of that nature must be justified by two aspects: 1. they operate of unconscious. This is the enormous importance of the work and teachings of Jacques Lacan. 2. It´s about to diffuse and disseminate a great author not known in Brazil until now, which is literary virtuous that is Georges Perec.

O presente trabalho realiza um estudo do tema da busca e seus desdobramentos nos contos de João Antônio. A dissertação focaliza, em especial, as narrativas que integram os livros Malagueta Perus e Bacanaço (1963) e Abraçado ao meu Rancor (1986). O eixo teórico se constitui a partir das conceituações de tema desenvolvidas por B. Tomachevski, acrescidas de formulações de T. Todorov, Maurice Blanchot e Jean-Pierre Richard. Com o auxílio deste referencial teórico, identifica-se os elementos relacionados à busca, investigando sua ocorrência em ambos os livros e evidenciando seu papel estruturador nas narrativas. Na elaboração das análises textuais, sempre que pertinente, lança-se mão de conceitos da psicanálise freudiana que contribuem para a compreensão dos núcleos afetivos em torno dos quais se organiza a temática em foco. / This work analyses the subject matter of the search and its unfolding within João Antônios short stories. The dissertation is mainly focused on the narratives that form Malagueta Perus e Bacanaço (1963) and Abraçado ao Meu Rancor (1986) books. Theoretical axis is based on the thematic concepts developed by B. Tomachevski, added by formulations from T. Todorov, Maurice Blanchot and Jean-Pierre Richard. Supported by this theory references, the elements connected to the search have been identified, investigating occurrence in both books and evidencing its structuring role in the narratives. For textual analysis preparation, whenever applicable, concepts of Freudian psychoanalysis were used in order to cooperate for the understanding of the affection cores which center the organization of the referred subject matter.
