This thesis examines how Dickens positions education between self-help and philanthropy in "Bleak House" and "Little Dorrit." The first chapter examines Dickens’s own education as well as his education-related charitable activities to provide context for the following analysis of "Bleak House" and "Little Dorrit." The second chapter focuses on education in "Bleak House" as a locus both for Dickens’s critique of the government’s irresponsible failure to educate the poor and for Dickens’s depiction of social responsibility motivating individuals to teach others. Finally, the third chapter considers the role of education in "Little Dorrit" by studying Amy Dorrit as an exemplar and teacher of social responsibility who stands in contrast to the prevailing irresponsibility that characterizes her family and “Society.”

This collection is not meant to be a history book, but instead a creative work highlighting four participants in the battle of the Little Bighorn. Included, are actual events and people of the famous 1876 war between the American Indians and the U.S. 7"' Cavalry. Historical fiction is entwined within each piece to give readers a clear picture of what occurred on that June day. For instance, the author creates dialogue between the characters, while not knowing what each person actually said. Years of research has provided the author with insight into the characters, while assisting the National Park Service as a summer trail guide at the Little Bighorn helped the author to set each scene for readers. The authors repeated experiences at the battlefield has helped to form the choices made in these stories. Evidence found since the historic battle ended, and items discovered now, stress the importance that the search must go on. The stories of Custer, Reno, Wooden Leg and Edgerly deserve to be told in a contemporary way while remaining historically accurate. Educating others about the significant battle and how it shaped the American West is essential. / Department of English

This study focuses on the development of architectural education at the University of Oregon's School of Architecture and Allied Arts (A&AA) in Eugene, Oregon. Applying a historic preservation perspective, this study examines how architectural perceptions are manifested through institutional changes in architectural education. Beginning with a focus on the A&AA under the administration of Dean Ellis F. Lawrence and Professor W. R. B. Willcox, this study transitions into an exploration of Dean Sidney W. Little's decidedly modernist alteration of the curriculum and building in the mid-twentieth century. During this period, the A&AA underwent a major shift from a curriculum and building based on the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement to a radically different approach that fully embraced the philosophy of modernism and actively rejected any allegiance to past architectural forms.
