Gesto musical e o uso de interfaces físicas digitais na performance do livre electronics / -Perez, Mauricio 07 October 2016 (has links)
Este trabalho analisa o uso de interfaces físicas digitais na criação e performance da música eletroacústica em tempo real, sobretudo pelo conceito de gesto musical. Para tal propósito, primeiramente, foi realizado um estudo sistemático de dois objetos centrais para pesquisa, a saber, as interfaces digitais e o conceito de gesto em música. Revisitamos alguns elementos sobre a construção de instrumentos musicais digitais, acrescentado novas perspectivas à luteria digital a partir da concepção de gesto musical, como por exemplo, na concepção de mapeamento. Além disso, levantamos algumas questões estéticas referentes tanto a compreensão destas interfaces como instrumentos musicais quanto seu uso na composição musical e na performance do live electronics. O conceito de gesto musical, por usa vez, é compreendido neste trabalho como uma questão emergente da prática musical na contemporaneidade. Apontamos para os diferentes entendimentos das pesquisas em música sobre os significados contidos neste conceito, como suas dimensões corporal e sonora e suas capacidades cinética e semântica. Assim, expandimos o conceito de gesto musical em um contexto que utiliza estas interfaces para ideias como as de corporalidade, fisicalidade e causalidade. Posteriormente, propomos a junção entre os elementos presentes no conceito de gesto musical com os elementos constitutivos das interfaces e com a prática de criação musical e performance mediada por elas, principalmente sobre o ponto de vista da causalidade. Desta maneira reconhecemos que o relacionamento entre as ações corporais e os movimentos sonoros contribuem para a significação musical nas práticas que utilizam interfaces físicas digitais. Identificamos que estas relações de causalidade podem se apresentar desde modelos físico-naturais de coerência gestual, como em relações artificiais entre gesto e som e seus substituintes. Finalmente, é apresentada uma metodologia de análise para performances que utilizam estas interfaces, como aqui compreendidas, que contemplam tanto como a interface se apresenta para o músico que a toca quanto como a relação entre performer e interface podem ser compreendidas pelo espectador-ouvinte. Estas proposições demonstram como as interfaces estão inseridas em um contexto que considera o corpo como um elemento estético na criação da música eletroacústica ao vivo. / This research analyzes the use of digital physical interfaces in the creation and performance of electroacoustic music in real time, especially the concept of musical gesture. For this purpose, first, we conducted a systematic study of two central objects for research, namely, digital interfaces and the concept of gesture in music. We revisit some core elements of the construction of digital musical instruments, added new perspectives to digital luthiery from the concept of musical gesture as the mapping. We identify that these causal relationships may present from physical and natural models of gestural coherence, as artificial relationship between gesture and sound and their surrogates Finally, it is presented a methodology for performances that use these interfaces, as here understood, which include both how the interface is presented to the musician that plays much like the relationship between performer and interface can be understood by the viewer-listener. These proposals demonstrate how the interfaces are inserted in a context that considers the body as an aesthetic element in the practice of the live electroacoustic music.

CuDAS : an interactive curriculum combining pedagogic composition with interactive software for the teaching of music technologyLeaman, Oliver January 2010 (has links)
Within the framework of education of Music Technology for 16-18 year olds there exists a lack of thorough teaching and learning resources sufficient for a broad understanding of the basics of audio and electronic synthesis. This PhD submission outlines the role of the composer in the classroom in addressing this fundamental issue through the development of a curriculum containing pedagogic composition and interactive software. There will be a discussion of the principles of pedagogic methodologies developed by various composers and of the current model of learning provided in Music Technology Alevel. The programming tools used to develop the software are investigated, as well as an exploration into the current learning psychology that informed the curriculum development. This submission consists of a written thesis that accompanies a set of compositions and a multimedia DVD, which includes the software for the CuDAS curriculum. Within this software is contained a presentation of a series of interactive tutorials alongside compositions in the form of scores, recordings and interactive exercises. There is also include written supporting documentation and sound files of techniques and recordings from contrasting genres of music history.

Dysphonia, for solo violin, chamber ensemble and live electronicsPalamara, Jason Andrew 01 May 2015 (has links)
DYSPHONIA is a music and dance work, for violin soloist with a live chamber orchestra, including multiple laptops and a custom-built gesture detection system worn by a dancer. The piece was choreographed by Professor Charlotte Adams of the University of Iowa Dance Department and premiered at the Faculty Graduate Dance Concerts in February of 2015.
This piece is inspired by ongoing research into computer programming, gesture and music-making, artificial intelligence (AI), and creative algorithms. While the actual algorithms I developed for use in this piece are far from sentient, it is my hope that this piece may bring about discussion and further interest in creative AI. In our initial discussions, choreographer Charlotte Adams and I discovered that we both have witnessed a large number of people buying into immersive technologies without questioning the total cost to their well being, without questioning whether the technology has a positive impact on their lives, and without an understanding regarding the complex changes being wrought in our society due to the mass adoption of such technologies.
Thus we designed this piece around the technology itself, so that the union between the dancer and the prosthesis is brought about by the movement and action that takes place in the piece. The intent was to create a scene where the audience suddenly becomes aware that something new is happening, namely that the dancer’s glove has started to make noise and there is a new connection made between the music and the dance.

Performer and Electronic-Activated Acoustics: Three New Works for Solo Percussion and Live ElectronicsJanuary 2015 (has links)
abstract: Technological advancements in computers and audio software and hardware devices in the twenty-first century have led to the expansion of possibilities for music composition, including works for acoustic instruments and live electronics. Electroacoustic composition is rapidly and continually evolving, and much that has been written about compositional techniques for percussion and live electronics is becoming outdated. Live electronics include performer-triggered events, audio processing, electronic responses to various inputs, and electronic decision-making during live performances. These techniques can be employed in a variety of ways. This project sheds light on how modern composers of different musical and cultural backgrounds reimagine the use of percussion through the lens of new technologies.
Through the commission, examination, and recording of three new works for solo percussion and live electronics, the author seeks to further explore and highlight electroacoustic compositional techniques for solo percussion. A specific compositional element to be included in these commissioned works is the activation or manipulation of the acoustic properties of percussion instruments by electronic components. The three artists who contributed works are percussionist-composer Jeremy Muller, composer and multimedia artist Jordan Munson, and composer, sound artist, and performer Garth Paine. The creativity demonstrated in their previous works made them desirable candidates for this project. Each of them approached their composition in different ways. In Hysteresis, Muller utilizes a loudspeaker underneath a vibraphone to expand the sound palette of the instrument with microtonal electronic sounds that match the instrument’s timbre. In Where Light Escapes You, Jordan Munson layers various electronic sounds with the vibraphone to create a slowly evolving texture that also incorporates a bass drum and the buzzing of snare drums. In Resonant Textures, Paine spatializes vibraphone, cymbal, and electronic sounds to create a meditative and immersive listening experience. Para tal discussão foi utilizado o programa Ableton Live, desenvolvido na Alemanha em 1999, que atualmente constitui ferramenta de produção musical amplamente utilizada em performances ao vivo e em estúdio. O objetivo geral deste trabalho é discutir possibilidades de utilização do programa Ableton Live como ferramenta na preparação e realização da performance ao contrabaixo bem como a interação entre o músico e o computador, de forma a propor estratégias de preparação da performance do contrabaixo com Live Electronics e Live Looping. A discussão enfatiza o papel do performer, bem como aspectos relacionados à performance musical do contrabaixo acústico neste contexto. O trabalho está organizado em 4 partes principais: 1) Revisão da Literatura sobre questões organizacionais, técnico-interpretativas; aspectos psicológicos, abordagens sobre a musicalidade e expressividade; conceitos de Hiperinstrumento, técnica estendida e a relação compositor-intérprete; 2) Apresentação dos objetos de estudo - recursos de execução do contrabaixo na contemporaneidade; breve histórico sobre Live Electronics e aspectos básicos de funcionamento do programa utilizado; 3) um relato de experiência sobre a preparação de um recital de contrabaixo e piano que utilizou o sistema computacional como parte fundamental das estratégias de preparação da performance; e 4) O processo de preparação para a performance, a relação entre compositor e intérprete, aspectos da improvisação musical e uma reflexão sobre técnicas estendidas do instrumento em duas obras: BASS COLORS (para contrabaixo, Live Electronics e vídeo) de Ricardo Bigio e TICKER TAPE (para contrabaixo e Ableton Live) de Robert Matheson. A discussão evidenciou que estratégias de preparação da performance do contrabaixo com Live Electronics e Live Looping utilizando o programa Ableton Live são pertinentes e úteis para o avanço das possibilidades de criação (composição e performance) no contrabaixo. / This paper discusses the preparation for a contrabass performance related to real-time interaction computing devices, within known strands like Live Electronics and Live Looping. The software chosen to work was Ableton Live, developed in Germany in 1999, widely used for music production and live performances and in studio. The general objective of this work is to discuss possibilities of using the Ableton Live program as a tool in the preparation and performance of the double bass as well as an interaction between the musician and the computer, to propose a strategy for the preparation of double bass performance with Live Electronics and Live Looping. The discussion emphasizes the role of the performer as well as related to the musical performance of the acoustic bass in context. The work is organized in 4 main parts: 1) Literature review on normative issues, technical-interpretative, psychological questions and approaches on musicality and expressivity; on concepts of Hyper instrument, extended technique and the relation composer-interpreter; 2) Presentation of the objects of study - resources of execution of the contrabass in the contemporaneity; Brief history on live electronics and basic program operating features; 3) an experience report on the preparation of a double bass and piano recital that uses the computer system as a fundamental part of the performance preparation strategy; 4) The process of preparation for a performance, the relationship between composer and performer, musical improvisation and a reflection on the techniques of assembling two works: BASS COLORS (for bass, Live Electronics and video) by Ricardo Bigio and TICKER TAPE (For double bass and Ableton Live) by Robert Matheson. The discussion has shown that the bass performance strategy with Live Electronics and Live Looping, the Ableton Live program, are important for advancing the possibilities of creation (composition and performance) of the double bass.
