A metodologia de ensino utilizada, aprendizagem baseada em casos foi adequada e o ambiente TelEduc favoreceu o desenvolvimento desta metodologia / Abstract: This study was a applied research, which had the following objectives: a) to describe the steps of the development of a long-distance educational course (LDEC) on Surgical Material Sterilization Processes to be given by Internet; b) to evaluate the course through specialists in sterilization processes and in LDEC; c) to describe students and evaluators profile; d) to evaluate students' participation and their opinion about the course. It was about a methodological research The studied population was made of nurses from Campinas Metropolitan Area and from different cities of Sao Paulo State. Fifty-eight nurses were invited through e-mail or telephone; fourteen (24,1%) subscribed and 11 completed the course (11/14 or 78,6%). All nurses who concluded the course were females, with an average age of 40 years, and graduation time of 17 years. The course was presented in two modules, distributed in four weeks (26 hours). The chosen teaching method was the Case-based Learning, with the objectives of promoting an active educative process and allowing interaction among students, in order to build knowledge with commitment, evolvement and responsibility. The course environment chosen for its creation, participation and administration was the TelEduc. Before its beginning, the course's first module was evaluated by three specialists in sterilization processes and by two specialists in LDEC. The judges specialists em sterilization were females, with median age of 48 years, and median time of experience on the area of about 15 years. As for the specialists em LDEC. one was male, the other female, had 34 and 54 years respectively; their experience time in LDEC was de three and seven years, respectively. By the end of the course, the judges performed a new evaluation. The specialists em sterilization considered the course adequate on the items Authorship, Presentation of Information and Educational Project, but needing slight reformulation on General Content of Information and Reliability of Information. On the other hand, the specialists in LDEC considered the course adequate in Authorship, General Content of Information and Educational Project. Regarding the item Presentation of Information, the course was considered adequate, but needing slight reformulation. The test of Friedman was used to verify the agreement enters the three judges of sterilization. Significant discord between the judge 1 and judge 2 was found. Students were evaluated in a processing way as well as through self-evaluation. In order to evaluate students' opinion about the course, a questionnaire Likert-type was used containing positive and negative statements. The Alpha coefficient of Cronbach was used to calculate the internal consistency of the instrument and found the value of 0,77, what it represents good consistency. Results showed a favorable opinion of the course. As conclusion, the proposed objectives of the course were met, although it needs small reformulation. The teaching methodology used - case-based learning - was adequate, and the environment TelEduc favored its development / Mestrado / Enfermagem e Trabalho / Mestre em Enfermagem

Exploration Of New Methods In Long Distance Transportation Data Collection And Tourism Travel In Vermont

Kaufman, Benjamin 01 January 2017 (has links)
ABSTRACT Human transportation patterns have continued to shift and increase in rate as technology has made travel between spatially disparate locations more feasible. These movements are responsible for approximately one third of global carbon emissions, and account for one half of Vermont’s greenhouse gas output. Modeling transportation behaviors is difficult due to changing travel patterns and issues of surveying human participants. Long distance travel patterns are especially difficult and have not received the attention that urban mobility has within the literature. In this Masters thesis, I describe current methods of transportation data collection and propose new methods, as well as attempt to quantify the impact on Vermont’s roadways of the transportation-based tourism sector. In the first chapter of this thesis, I describe a GPS-based travel survey conducted over the course of one year, coupled with interview data of long distance trips undertaken by 10 participants. Long distance travel has historically been underrepresented in travel surveying due to its infrequency, resulting in decreased likelihood of capturing a long distance trip in a short travel study. By extracting points at intervals from the GPS dataset, it becomes possible to determine accuracy of trip matching between the two datasets with adjusted data collection methods. The second chapter examines transportation related to tourism in Vermont. As one of Vermont’s largest industry sectors, economic impact has been of particular interest to state planners. However, limited analyses of the transportation impacts of this sector are currently available. My research models route choice of drive through tourists, whom constitute 40% of visitors, attempting to begin quantifying tourist mileage and CO2 emissions within the state. Together, these studies expand knowledge on long distance transport data collection and the role of tourism in Vermont’s transportation mileage.

"The Long Goodbye": Uncertainty Management in Alzheimer's Caregivers

Shaunfield, Sara 05 1900 (has links)
Caregivers for individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (AD) shoulder a remarkably complex burden as compared to other caregivers of elderly individuals. For long distance caregivers, geographical separation further compounds the problems experienced by AD caregivers, as they are isolated from family members and support networks. Both on-site and long-distance AD caregivers experience uncertainty; the findings from this study illustrate how AD caregivers manage the uncertainty of the disease and primary care, as well as how uncertainty differs between on-site and long-distance caregivers. AD caregiver (N = 13) interviews were transcribed and qualitatively analyzed using uncertainty management theory as a thematic lens. The analysis revealed that AD caregivers experience overwhelming feelings of burden, guilt, and doubt; however, these feelings manifest differently depending on caregiver type. The findings of this study demonstrate that sources for obtaining information regarding AD and caregiving were useful for on-site caregivers; however, the sources did not account for the needs of long-distance caregivers or the psychosocial needs of on-site caregivers. Furthermore, AD caregivers did not seek support or information about AD and caregiving from health care professionals. Implications for future research regarding long-distance and on-site AD caregiving are discussed.

A Dialectical Approach to Studying Long-Distance Maintenance Strategies

Maguire, Katheryn C. (Katheryn Coveley) 08 1900 (has links)
Using both qualitative and quantitative methodology, this thesis investigates the tactics used by long-distance relational partners, the differences in use of the tactics between long-distance and proximal partners, the relationship among the maintenance tactics, and the relationship of the tactics to relational satisfaction. Seven relational maintenance strategies were identified from the investigation: affirmation, expression, high tech mediated communication, low tech mediated communication, future thought, negative disclosure, and together-time. Significant differences in the use of maintenance tactics between long-distance and proximal partners were discovered and several tactics were found to correlate with relational satisfaction for both relationship types. It is concluded that relational maintenance should be viewed from a multi-dimensional perspective that recognizes the impact relational dialectics have on relationships.

Genome Walking of Large Fragments: An Improved Method

Rishi, A. S., Nelson, Neil D., Goyal, Arun 01 July 2004 (has links)
The PCR-based genome walking method has been commonly used to isolate upstream regions from known cDNA sequences. The limitation of this technique is based on the location of the restriction site upstream to the gene-specific primer in the genome; hence, different restriction enzymes have to be used to isolate larger upstream fragments. In this paper, we present the advantageous use of partial and size-selected DNA as templates for genome walking, in isolating larger upstream fragments. We have successfully tested this approach to isolate larger upstream fragments using the FailSafe™ PCR System. Use of partial digestion and size selection can provide better chances in obtaining larger flanking regions of known DNA sequence, when compared to use of total digested DNA.
