___________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / In the ritual of lament of souls, a group of people wrapped in white sheets, mostly women, walk around streets and alleys of cities making stops at churches, cemeteries, cruises and crossings - places in which they chant prayers, benditos and incelências (wailing songs). The outputs occur throughout the Lent and represent an annual mourning for the Passion of Christ. From the ethnography of the ritual, we can travel trough the paths of devotion, the singularities of the history of prayer and the leadership of the owners of the 'trey of souls', as do they call the groups of mourners in the three localities of Chapada Diamantina plateau- Andaraí, Igatu e Mucugê - where the research took course. The focus of the present study is mainly directed on the trey of Andaraí, to which are addressed more detailed analysis about the elements that compose the ritual and on the relation of the lament with the jarê, a variant of the candomblé de caboclo in that region.
