For having admitted that text is not only a sequence of sentences but a communicative unit formed by interrelated language-subject-history, the approach applied to the object of analysis (which in this research communicates with the researcher) has demonstrated that it makes sense because of the social voices present on its verbal material. These voices belong to excluded groups, to religious discourses, to authoritarian rulers, to those who are in favor (and against) the war. These voices also denounce the omission that touches some, the prejudice that humiliates others and cause protest music to communicate interactions that go beyond the class struggle concerning the economic aspects of it but, in addition and presenting new categories of this struggle, have multiplied senses coming from and to the struggles, from and to the subjects and from and to the songs as the decades advanced. To apprehend the meanings of what is verbally enunciated through this chain of relations is becoming more and more necessary to studies that cherish a less dichotomous view of language. / Esta dissertação é resultado de estudos realizados no âmbito da Análise de Discurso sob a perspectiva dialógica bakhtiniana e tem por objetivo compreender os discursos manifestos em treze letras de músicas de protesto escritas nos Estados Unidos no período de 1905 a 2014. Por admitir que todo texto se constitui por sua relação com outros textos e que, por esta razão, não é somente uma sequência de frases mas uma unidade comunicativa formada por linguagem,sujeito e história inter-relacionados, a abordagem aplicada ao objeto em análise (que nesta pesquisa se comunica com o pesquisador) demonstrou que o sentido nele se dá por vozes sociais manifestas em seu material verbal. Essas vozes pertencem a grupos excluídos, a religiosos,a governantes autoritários, aos que são a favor (e aos que são contra) a guerra, denunciam a omissão que atinge alguns, o preconceito que humilha outros e fazem com que a música de protesto comunique interações que ultrapassam a luta de classes do ponto de vista econômico e que, ao apresentar novas categorias desta luta,se modificam e modificam a sociedade através das décadas. Apreender os sentidos do que se enuncia verbalmente por meio desta cadeia de relações vem se tornando cada vez mais necessário aos estudos que prezem por um olhar menos dicotômico de linguagem.
