STRATEGIES AND METHODS FOR IMPROVING SIGHT-READING

Kuo, Ming-Hui 01 January 2012 (has links)
A student's sight-reading ability directly affects the speed and quality of their learning, especially for those at the beginning and intermediate levels. Sight-reading on keyboard percussion instruments is typically very challenging for percussionists because percussion instruments are the only kind of instruments that the player doesn't physically touch when they play them. The player is removed from contact with the instrument through the use of mallets. This document will cover the topics of body movements, kinesthetic sense, music pattern recognition, sight-reading strategies in different levels, and music resources for instructors. Students who develop better sight-reading skills will learn new music faster, improve accuracy on the instrument, and increase their level of self-confidence.

La symbolique maternelle dans quatre romans de Françoise Mallet-Joris /

Wilson, Sonia January 1990 (has links)
So far, Francoise Mallet-Joris has been categorized either as a Catholic novelist or as a moderate feminist. Accused of conservatism by some, perceived by others as immoral, she has been considerably underrated by a critical audience anxious to maintain traditional literary categories. This thesis attempts to demonstrate that faith and feminism, far from conflicting with each other, are linked in Mallet-Joris' work with the process of writing, thus forming a triple entity where the common denominator is the theme of maternity. This theme will be analysed in four of Mallet-Joris' novels, Les Mensonges, Les Signes et les Prodiges, Allegra, and La Tristesse du Cerf-volant, using a symbolic approach whose usefulness lies in the twofold definition of a symbol as, on the one hand, a materialisation of the inexpressible and on the other, a split unity. For the temporal modality and the concept of identity inherent in the maternal experience place it outside the narrative system, thus putting any author who wishes to tackle this area in the position of either inventing a new narrative form or attempting a compromise between already existing forms and the specific content of the maternal experience. It is this latter alternative that Francoise Mallet-Joris adopts. Although as far as form is concerned, Mallet-Joris can hardly be termed innovative, she demonstrates on an ideological plane an originality which is largely the product of using the symbol of the Virgin Mary as an intermediary between the maternal experience and the symbolic order.

Vem vet? : Att utforska utökade speltekniker för både slagverkare och kompositörer.

Hallin, Viktor January 2018 (has links)
This thesis is an experimental exploration of cooperation on extended techniques for marimba. In my bachelor thesis I experimented with techniques not commonly used on marimba and also innovated some new ones. Eleven of the techniques I found have been used in this thesis. I have collaborated with three composers who, based on my seminar on extended techniques, have written one piece each for extended techniques on marimba. The compositional process of the three pieces have been an interactive collaboration between each composer and me. The drafts have been sent back and forth with reflections from both the composers and me on what was not working and why. This resulted in three playable pieces which I have recorded. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the process of cooperation when writing for unconventional techniques and one goal has been to widen the horizon for marimba music with these techniques. It resulted in the three wonderful pieces of music, Pathfinder by Johannes Pollak, The last to leave by Pontus Bertling and Jag kommer på en bra titel snart, jag lovar! by Viktor Elinder. It gave me a deeper understanding of extended techniques, both their potentials and limitations. I also learned a lot about commissioning music and collaboration.

AN ANALYSIS AND PERFORMANCE GUIDE OF STEVE REICH’S MALLET QUARTET

Perez, Francisco S. 01 January 2018 (has links)
Steve Reich’s music has had a profound effect on the contemporary percussionist’s repertoire. More recently, his Mallet Quartet (2009) has been one of the most performed works in the rising genre of mallet-keyboard quartets, which was featured in Third Coast Percussion’s 2017 Grammy-winning album Third Coast Percussion | Steve Reich. With Mallet Quartet, Reich codified this type of ensemble into the contemporary repertoire of percussion as evidenced through current commissions in progress by groups such as Sō Percussion and Third Coast Percussion. The purpose of this document is to delineate the trajectory (past and present) of the mallet-keyboard quartet and highlight the most important compositional characteristics found within Mallet Quartet. These characteristics include the use of canonical augmentations, large-scale tonal shifts, rhythmic modification, and developing variation. After this analysis, this dissertation provides a performance guide to Mallet Quartet which specifically address the practicalities necessary for a successful performance. Topics such as the setup of instruments, mallet considerations, approaches to challenges in part-reading, and common ensemble issues are discussed.
