A Study of the Concerns of Eleventh and Twelfth Grade Seminary Students by Sex and Grade in Areas Covered by the Thirty-Five Directional Objectives of the LDS Seminary System

Maxfield, M. Richard 01 January 1965 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to determine the concerns of eleventh and twelfth grade L.D.S. Seminary students in areas covered by each of the thirty-five directional objectives of the L.D.S. Seminary System and to determine whether significant differences occur on the basis of grade and sex. A student inventory was constructed to measure concerns. The question of which directional objectives cause the greatest concern was to be answered for each male and female, junior and senior group. Five null hypotheses were formulated hypothesizing no differences in concerns between juniors and seniors, male and female groups. The student inventory was administrered to seminary students from four seminaries chosen to provide a representative sample of rural to urban students. Means, standard deviations, and rank order correlations were used to answer the questions of greatest concern. The five hypotheses were tested by use of F-ratios and t-ratios.

A Proposed Program for Adjusting the Released-Time Seminary Program of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to Three Major Flexible Scheduling Programs

Montague, Wallace Dea 01 January 1967 (has links) (PDF)
Whenever a public school modifies its scheduling program it has a direct effect upon any released-time program affiliated with the school. This study was undertaken, therefore, to determine the adjustment necessary in the released-time seminary program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in order to make that program compatible with three major flexible scheduling programs: (1) the Period Exchange of Rotating Period Program as used in the Cedar City High School, Cedar City, Utah, (2) the Modular Schedule as typified by the Stanford School Scheduling System (SSSS) and used in Roy High School, Roy, Utah, and (3) the Daily Demand Scheduling Concept as used by Brookhurst Jr. High School, Anaheim, California, and further developed and expended to a computer program by Brigham Young University High School, Provo, Utah, under the title of Daily Demand Computer Scheduling (DDCS).

A History of Mormon Periodicals from 1830 to 1838

Moore, Richard G. 01 January 1983 (has links) (PDF)
The "Mormon" Church has published over one hundred different periodicals since the purchase of its first printing press in 1831. The early Latter-day Saint newspapers set many precedents for the myriad of Mormon publications that would follow. This is a study of the periodicals of the Church from its origin in 1830 to the exile of its members from missouri in 1839. It discusses the reasons and purposes behind early Mormon journalism and the effects of this printed material on Mormon history. This work also gives a history of the five church periodicals published during the era mentioned above, specifically, the Evening and Morning Star, the Messenger and Advocate, the Elder's Journal, the Upper Missouri Advertiser, and the Northern Times. One of the papers was a conventional secular weekly; another a political journal. The other three discussed were religious monthlies designed to instruct church members, promote faith, and to serve as a missionary tool. The religious monthlies were most successful as vehicles of information that helped standardize beliefs within early Mormonism.

Measuring the Reading Level of LDS Materials: A Supplement to the Dale Word List

Stahle, Linda 01 January 1981 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to supplement the Dale word list with a list of terms that are familiar to most members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and thus increase the precision of the Dale-Chall readability formula when it is applied to LDS materials. The Dale word list consists of 3,000 words that are familiar to 80 percent of fourth graders. The procedure involved identifying non-Dale words that occur frequently in LDS church publications and testing them on LDS fourth graders in a three-alternative multiple-choice format.Of the 850 words tested, 249 were identified correctly by 80 percent of the LDS fourth graders tested and could, therefore, constitute a valid addition to the Dale word list when the Dale-Chall formula is used to test materials prepared for a Mormon audience.
