The purpose of this research is to develop a conception of a transportation system called AVCS maglev which is the synergistic combination of two promising concepts, AVCS and Maglev, and to assess its potential as a transportation strategy to cope with the forthcoming challenge of the mobility, safety, environmental protection, and economic growth of the United States. The emphases are put on investigating suitable technological aspects, selecting suitable operational control concepts, assessing economic viability, and determining socioeconomic impacts of the system. Also, the National Development Model (NDM) is developed and analyzed to obtain a deeper understanding of the rational policy formation about the U.S. SOCioeconomic development of the next century, based on the premise that development means improving both quantity of life and quality of life. NDM is organized into six sectors: (1) Industrial Sector, (2) Environmental Sector, (3) Infrastructure Sector, (4) Social Development Sector, (5) Demographic Sector, and (6) Employment Sector. Four policy alternatives are identified, based on the key issues relevant to the future development patterns, and analyzed by computer simulation: (1) Social Development Policy, (2) Industrial Development Policy, (3) Infrastructure Development Policy, and (4) Environmental Protection Policy. / Ph. The objective of this study is to set a methodology for the economic evaluation of high speed ground transportation systems. The main objective of this study is to establish a systematic framework, in order that planners can quickly understand and analyze the implications that different policies have on the life-cycle of the transportation system. The methodology is adaptable for different modes and also for different locations at which similar systems could be implemented. The mode under consideration here is that of Magnetically levitated vehicles and the study area is the Northeast corridor of the United States.
The economic evaluation is based on a Systems Dynamics simulation model. The model incorporates socioeconomic parameters, trip generation, mode split, traffic engineering, economic parameters and elements of mass transportation. The interactions within these subsystems and between them are studied through various policy analysis which were conducted. The range of policy covers socioeconomic parameters, traffic strategies and economic parameters. Life cycle costs and revenues are the key performance indicators. Parameters such as elasticity values were assumed based on previous studies conducted in other locations.
Revenues from fares is the only benefit considered for implementation of the new transportation system. The model has been developed so that it can be expanded so as to include various other benefits from maglev implementation. The model is highly flexible and can be used for a wide range of policy analysis. With regard to magnetic levitated transportation system it was found to be an economically feasible transportation alternative to solve the problems facing high speed inter-city travel. The life cycle costs of such a venture were found to be highly sensitive to the cost of power and the elasticity values associated with the trip generation model. / Master of Science

Current research on thermal effects on guideways has addressed many aspects of the behavior of guideways using two-dimensional models. The two-dimensional models are acceptable for existing guideway designs, in which cross sectional shapes are uniform along the length of the guideway. However, three-dimensional models are necessary for a modular design, in which the track structures that interact with Maglev vehicles are made separately and are assembled into the support structure, and in which the cross sectional shapes are not uniform. A three-dimensional numerical model of the thermal environment, in which the effect of partial shading is taken into account, is implemented for the study of guideway behavior under various thermal environments. The numerical model of the thermal environment is calibrated to the experimental results under the thermal environment at Austin, Texas, and is extrapolated to predict the behaviors of guideways under the thermal environment in Las Vegas, Nevada, which is one of the candidate sites for the implementation and deployment of the high speed Maglev transportation system. This study addresses the suitability of a modular steel guideway design under such a thermal environment. Characteristics of the behavior of guideways under various thermal environments are identified, and the behavior of guideways under the effect of partial shading is summarized. / text
