Broadband Ferromagnetic Resonance Spectrometer : Instrument and ApplicationsDenysenkov, Vasyl January 2003 (has links)
This thesis compiles results of research in two mutuallydependent parts: 1) development of ferromagnetic resonance(FMR) spectrometer to study microwave properties offerromagnetic materials, and 2) characterization of new irongarnets: pulsed laser deposited Y3Fe5O12and Bi3Fe5O12films and Ce:Y3Fe5O12single crystal. First part describes a novelBroadbandFMRSpectrometerdesigned to characterize thin ferromagneticfilms. The spectrometer uses two probeheads: one is the X-bandmicrowave reflection cavity for room temperature measurementsand the in-cryostat microstrip line probe to perform FMRexperiments in the frequency range from 50 MHz to 40 GHz. Veryuniform and stable magnetic field up to 2.4 T, temperatures 4 Kto 420 K, and continuous frequency scan performed byHP8722Dvector network analyzer provide various modes ofoperation. Both probeheads are equipped with two-circlegoniometers to ensure accurate study of magneticanisotropy. The spectrometer was used to make express-analysis ofquality thus to optimize processing parameters of epitaxialiron garnet films grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD).Comprehensive study of uniaxial and cubic magnetocrystallineanisotropy has been performed for Ce:Y3Fe5O12bulk crystal as well as for Y3Fe5O12and Bi3Fe5O12films grown on different substrates by PLD andreactive ion beam sputtering techniques. BroadbandFMR-spectroscopy revealed difference in spectra of domain wallresonances: instead ofsoftspin modes in filmsgrown by liquid phase epitaxy, PLD-made films showdiffusetransformation of domains near thesaturation field. This effect indicates non-uniformity ofsaturation magnetization and field of uniaxial anisotropy inPLD-iron garnets. Spin wave resonances in comparison withuniform FMR have been studied to evaluatelocalqualityof ferromagnetic films. The resonance field andFMR linewidth behavior were studied at various crystallographicdirections determined by X-ray diffraction. FMR was used to choose PLD-made YIG films with low losses atmicrowave frequencies and to build magnetostatic surface wavesmicrowave bandpass filter. The filter was designed as a planarfilm structure with a microstrip line for transducers. It is afirst demonstration of feasibility to introduce PLD processingtechnique to magnetostatic wave technology. Ferromagnetic resonance in films with growth induced anisotropyManuilov, Sergey January 2011 (has links)
This thesis discusses two different magnetic materials: epitaxial yttrium iron garnet (YIG) and heteromorphous CoFeB-SiO2 films. YIG films were grown by pulse laser deposition (PLD) techniques onto gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) substrates of (111) and (001) crystal orientations. Using stoichiometric and overstoichiometric ablative targets, we developed two types of YIG submicron films. The films grown from overstoichiometric targets have magnetic properties slightly different from standard liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) YIGs. They also demonstrate good substrate matching and approximately 6% nonstoichiometry. In contrary, films grown from stoichiometric targets posses surprisingly high values of uniaxial anisotropy, meanwhile cubic anisotropy is reduced several times. These films also reveal strong lattice distortions and nonstoichiometry around 17%. Employing Weiss molecular field theory and single-ion anisotropy model we determined the preferential occupancy of the octahedral [a] positions in the YIG cubic lattices by Fe3+ vacancies. The vacancies were found to be preferentially oriented along the growth direction perpendicular to the film surface. We called this effect “deformation blockade”. Different magnetostatic surface wave (MSSW) filters were also demonstrated. The filters employ high uniaxial anisotropy in YIG submicron films with magnetic losses ΔH ~ 1 Oe. Heteromorphous CoFeB-SiO2 films were deposited onto glass substrates employing carrousel magnetron sputtering. This novel technique allows amorphous films fabrication with record high in-plane anisotropy. The induced anisotropy fields here are approximately dozen times greater the values achieved using conventional growth technique when external bias field is applied during deposition process. Interesting observations were made studying CoFeB-SiO2 magnetization dynamics in the wide frequency range from 500 kHz up to 15 GHz. Two different anomalies of the magnetic susceptibility were found at the field of in-plane anisotropy Hp and critical field Hcr (0 < Hcr < Hp). We explained the anomalies appearance by sequence of the domain walls transformations so that Néel-Bloch-Néel domain wall transition stands for the instability at H = ±Hcr and transition from the uniformly magnetized state to the domain state with Néel domain wall and vice versa is responsible for the instability at H = ±Hp. / QC 20111122

Les récentes découvertes sur les phénomènes hyperfréquences et nonlinéaires dans les structures minces ferromagnétiques actives planaires ont fait émerger un grand nombre de nouvelles études et applications pratiques prometteuses. La conversion de l'énergie magnétoélastique peut être beaucoup plus efficace à proximité de la transition de réorientation de spin (TRS). Les structures minces ferromagnétiques actives planaires fournissent un grand nombre de caractéristiques haute fréquence uniques : par exemple, les conditions pour l’effet Doppler anomal peuvent être satisfaites. Les cristaux magnoniques représentent également un domaine prometteur pour les futures investigations.Dans le présent travail nous avons établi la description théorique de la propagation des ondes hyperfréquences et non-linéaires dans les structures minces ferromagnétiques actives planaires de compositions différentes. Il a été démontré expérimentalement et théoriquement que les vibrations basse fréquence d’un cantilever peuvent être amplifiées quand la résonance ferromagnétique est excitée par un champ électromagnétique HF à proximité de la TRS. En outre, l'effet de la démodulation magnétoélastique peut être complété par un effet magnétoélectrique nonlinéaire. La possibilité de l'apparition de l'effet Doppler anomal lors de la propagation d'une onde de surface magnétostatique dans une structure ferrite-diélectrique-métal, dans une certaine plage de paramètres du système, est démontrée. La dispersion d'une onde magnétostatique de surface se propageant dans un film dont l'épaisseur varie linéairement, et possédant une structure périodique sous la forme de bandes parallèles gravées, a été calculée / Recently discovered investigations on the high frequency and nonlinear phenomena in thin active ferromagnetic planar structures showed a great number of new studies and promising practical applications. The magnetoelastic energy conversion can be much more efficient in the vicinity of spin reorientation transition (SRT). The thin active ferromagnetic planar structures provide a lot of unique high frequency features: for instance, the anomalous Doppler effect conditions can be satisfied. The magnon crystals are also an actual area for the further investigation of the domain.In the present work we derived the theoretical description for the high frequency and non-linear waves propagation in thin planar ferromagnetic structures with different compositions. It was demonstrated experimentally and theoretically that LF vibrations of the cantilever can be amplified when FMR is excited by HF electromagnetic field near SRT. Moreover the magnetoelastic demodulation effect can be supplemented with nonlinear magnetoelectric effect. The possibility of the occurrence of the anomalous Doppler effect during propagation of an MSSW in an FDM structure in a certain range of system parameters is substantiated. The dispersion of a surface magnetostatic wave propagating in a film, whose thickness varies linearly, with a periodic structure in the form of parallel etched strips was calculated. As it was clearly demonstrated these works are of great interest for the new studies and practical applications
