A quantitative study of gap recolonization in two contrasted limestone grasslandsHillier, Susan H. January 1984 (has links)
Gaps differing in size, form and season of origin (September 1978 and March 1979) were created artificially in adjacent north- and south-facing grasslands in North Derbyshire. Detailed measurements revealed marked differences between the two sites in patterns of vegetative regrowth and regeneration from seed. Specific effects of gap type and time of origin were detected on both slopes. Creation of gaps exerted pronounced effects upon the relative abundance of established components of the north-facing turf. Accumulations of bryophytes were considerably less after three years than in undisturbed turf and Avenula pratensis tended to be reduced in comparison with potentially faster-growing species such as Plantago lanceolata and Holcus lanatus. Effects of comparable magnitude were not induced on the southfacing slope and it is suggested that this may be related to the high level of disturbance normally experienced by the vegetation on this slope. On the north-facing slope where seedlings are comparatively scarce in undisturbed turf, gap creation promoted spring germination in species which maintain relatively persistent seed reserves at or near the soil surface. In marked contrast on the south-facing slope, large numbers of seedlings appeared in the autumn in both gaps and control areas. Such patterns are consistent with previous laboratory studies which revealed differences in germination requirements between the species concerned. On the south-facing slope seedling survival was often highest in areas where resprouting vegetative shoots were relatively dense. However, the benefit of this apparent 'shelter effect' rarely extended to seedling size which tended to decline in close proximity to vigorous vegetative shoots. In the concluding section of the thesis, the main results of the investigation are reviewed in relation to the influence of aspect upon vegetation structure, current theories on the determinants of 'species richness' and opportunities to control species composition by more informed grassland management.

Enterprise-wide knowledge audit conducted for a professional service firmSchwikkard, Diane Beryl 12 January 2009 (has links)
M.A. / This research paper sets out to explore the possibility that a knowledge audit methodology could be successfully implemented within a professional services enterprise in order to establish what core knowledge content requirements exist. By identifying this core knowledge, the researcher asserts that sales and professional staff should be enabled to enhance their ability to win business and improve the process of client service delivery. Using the knowledge economy as a backdrop, the researcher examines the impact this has had on the knowledge and information needs of the enterprise. The value of purely technology-based solutions to resolve the knowledge deficit within an enterprise is examined following on from which, the process of implementing a knowledge audit is discussed. Thereafter, the proposed knowledge audit methodology is developed and subsequently applied at an enterprise-wide level for a large professional services enterprise. The researcher explores the business case for implementing a knowledge management initiative. An analysis is then made of the results gathered from the knowledge audit. The existing infrastructure and resources are evaluated against any resultant knowledge management requirements. This is followed by an assessment of the current status of knowledge management within the enterprise. The researcher then provides a framework for the management of content that was identified during the knowledge audit. The importance of processes and policies in supporting the management of identified content is emphasised. This is followed by an assessment of any suitable opportunities for “quick win” projects. The researcher then examines whether the key research objectives were achieved. In closing, some additional suggestions are made regarding the future of the initiative and potential steps that might be taken to further entrench KM within the enterprise.

Exploring the links between strategic change and organizational outcomesMartin, Graeme January 1999 (has links)
This thesis discusses and comments on published work that explores the links between managerial attempts at major strategic and organizational changes (referred to throughout the thesis as strategic change) and key organizational outcomes. The opening chapter reviews the literature on strategic organizational change, particularly focussing on models of organizational change, extant research into success and failure of change programmes and the evaluation of change. A model of strategic organizational change is presented that demonstrates the links among key variables and outcomes of change. In chapter two, the published articles are critically revisited for their contributions to establishing the causes of success and failure in strategic change, conceptual development and methodological development in the field. In addition, most of the articles are reflected on to show how the data could be analytically generalized to the models developed in the literature review. The issues raised by the articles are addressed thematically and each article is considered separately.
